Prepare for fireworks as Murphy and Maguire go to war
Fierce rivals Shaun Murphy and Stephen Maguire will meet on Saturday in the second semi-final of the Maplin UK Championship, with vital ranking points (and one-upmanship) up for grabs.
The two players have had an ongoing feud since the 2004 Grand Prix, when Murphy was involved in having one of Maguire's frames docked. Stephen stoked the flames of the rivalry in 2006, saying, "I don't want to be a fat world champion", a clear swipe at Shaun's success at The Crucible the year before.
Maguire, ranked number two in the world, is the 4/6 favourite in the betting. He beat fellow Scotsman John Higgins in the last eight to set up a repeat of last year's semi. Livewire has already started a war of words, saying, "hopefully I'll do the same to him as I did last year."
Murphy, also known as The Devil's Haircut (what a strange nickname), is priced at 11/10 to win this clash, and gain revenge for his defeat at this stage in 2007. The former world champion will be raring to go for this match, having not reached a ranking event final since last season's Honghe Industrial China Open. In the 2007/08 campaign, he also lost two semi-finals and a final to Maguire, a record he will want to put straight.
