Back San Fran to continue resurgence in week 3
There were a few doubters of Mike Singletary when he took up the reins at the San Francisco 49er last year but the former Chicago Bears legend has answered the questions and produced what looks to be a real post-season contender.
The 49ers head to Minnesota on Sunday on the back of two impressive victories, firstly over the NFC champion Cardinals in Arizona and then over the well-hyped Seattle Seahawks.
It's still early days but all the signs coming out of San Fran seem to be extremely positive and you really have to back them continuing their surge at the Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome.
Singletary's side are the 5/2 outsiders against the also unbeaten Vikings but the real value comes on the +7 point spread at 10/11.
Minnesota may have won both of their games this season but Brett Favre's side still have to do a lot more before I'm impressed, given the scrappy performances they gave against the terrible Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns.
If they start as slowly this week (they went into half time behind in both games) then San Fran are unlikely to be so forgiving - probably because everyone is so terrified of the Singletary sized rant that accompanies anything other than giving 100%.
It's not just hard work that's pulled the 49ers together either with Frank Gore helping to create one of the best rush offences in the league and Isaac Bruce proving to be as reliable as ever.
The major factor for the rise though seems to be a defence that has taken on the passion and determination that has become the instant symbol of the head coach's mission.
In the past nine games the defence has only given up more than 20 points twice on their way to recording seven victories and, barring an off-day in Dallas, they've never allowed the opposition to win by more than the seven point spread we're offering here.
Add in the lingering doubts about Favre's ability to go deep then you have to believe the 49ers look the bet of the week.
Elsewhere this week, it'll be interesting to see how the Patriots bounce back from their poor loss against the New York Jets last week.
Randy Moss was kept quiet last Sunday but we all know that isn't likely to be a regular feature, especially with Tom Brady looking as good as ever.
However, they're playing a very impressive Falcons side this week who are proving that nothing about last season's run to the play-offs was a fluke.
They're 2-0 with impressive wins against two of last season's post-season participants and I think they should have enough here to make short work of the 10/11 about the +4.5 spread.
