MLB All-Star Game: Home Field Advantage On The Line

In-Play Trader Ben Brandon discusses...

The Mid Summer classic is upon us as the 2014 All Star game comes to Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota. On Monday and Tuesday we see baseball's best pitchers and hitters descend on Minneapolis.

The All-Star game this year will be an especially emotional one for Yankees fans as it will see the last appearance of Derek Jeter who is retiring at the end of the season and will be Hall of Fame bound.

On Monday we have all the glitz and the glamour of the Home Run Derby in a new format this year to make it more exciting for the fans. This year the Derby features Team Jose Bautista (representing the American League) against Team Troy Tulowitzki (representing the National League). The new format will feature a knockout competition for both teams to decide who will represent their team and league in the final.

This year sees last year's winner Yoenis Cespedes return as part of Team Bautista - you can get a healthy 5/1 on him doing the double. Most of the money seems to be on the short favourite Giancarlo Stanton for Team Tulowitzki at 11/4. He is worthy favourite though as he leads the National League in Home Runs despite playing half of his games in the cavernous Marlins Park.

Two others to watch out for are the captain of Team Bautista himself, Jose Bautista of Toronto, who has had a resurgent campaign and will see some money at 6/1. Another intriguing option for people who like bigger prices is Todd Frazier at 12/1 - he is leading all third basemen in the National League in home runs and is having a breakout year.

On Tuesday we have the Main Event itself - the 2014 All Star game. On the line is which league will get home field advantage in the World Series this Autumn. This adds an extra edge for the players involved who are on contending teams, as the last five winners of the World Series come from the league that won the All Star game. So unlike other sports' All Star games there is something meaningful on the line.

The All Star game is a must watch for baseball fans as well as the general sports fan - where else would you get to see Clayton Kershaw pitch to Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera, then Jose Bautista?

Looking at both the pitching and the hitting line-ups, we expect to see money on the American League at 10/11 due to their strength in hitting over the national league. Also unlike past years their pitching is not far off the National League pitching staff, with aces like Felix Hernandez, Yu Darvish and Max Scherzer.

The game is certainly going to be entertaining to watch and with home field advantage on the line both teams will be trying to the bitter end.

Hopefully it will be the perfect send off for the Captain Derek Jeter.
