The Ashes - 2nd Test Day Five - Betting updates and blog
The final day of the 2nd Test is upon us and England will be pushing for victory and a 1-0 series lead. The sun is shining but reports for later in the day are that rain and storms could be on the horizon so they will be looking for quick wickets.
England Win: Early wickets will be key, once they get through Hussey and Haddin they will be into the tail-enders and with a spinning pitch a new ball they will be confident of clearing up the innings quite cheaply and take a 1-0 series lead. They have a chance of an innings victory but if Australia pass their score they should have no problems quickly knocking off the runs required England 4/7
Draw: Early Australian resistence through Mike Hussey and Marcus North followed by bad weather and thunderstorms would mean the draw price would tumble giving any one who backed the draw hopes of collecting. Draw 5/4
Australia Win: The only scenario I could imagine is that Australia manage to get a lead of 150 and the pitch completely cracks up and England collapse in their 2nd innings, as they did here on the last tour. Highly unlikey though hence the odds of 150/1
It's another early start today, we'll be underway at 23:30.
23:30 KP finishes off his over last night in which he took the wicket of Clarke. Marcus North is out of form and there is talk he's playing for his place in the team, he's 8/13 to be next man out.
23:32 Here he is, the main man Graeme Swann. England have not taken the new ball to allow Swann to bowl at Marcus North.
News from the England game is that Stuart Broad is out for the series with an injury, I think Chris Tremlett will replace him in Perth.
23:40 Swann hits Marcus North's pad and there is an appeal, given not out, it's referred though but it hit hin outside the line and was missing the stumps. England lose one of their reviews. It was 1/3 that they on-field umpires decision would stand.
Mike Hussey dropped!! How crucial could that be? He gets a tiny edge and Prior can't hold on. Let's hope England don't regret that one. Australia 200/1 Draw 11/10 England 4/6
England take the new ball. Finn on to bowl.
11:53 WICKET!!! Mr Cricket has a nightmare, he looks to pull Steven Finn to the boundary but it loops up in the air and Jimmy Anderson takes the catch, England needed that, Brad Haddin next in, Hussey went for 52 Draw 9/4 England 1/3
00:15 Swann back on to bowl, Anderson and Finn will rotate from the other end. One more wicket and England will be in to the tail-enders.
00:20 OH JIMMY, JIMMY All the talk this morning was of Swann but it's Anderson and Finn who have taken the wickets. A beauty from Anderson sees Brad Haddin caught behind and England are into the bowlers now. A great start to the day and this could be over by lunch. Australia 200/1 Draw 9/2 England 1/8
HERE WE GO Ryan Harris goes first ball LBW for a King Pair!! Amazing scenes and England are rattling through the Aussies and are on course for an innings victory. Xavier Doherty comes in and Jimmy Anderson will be on a hat-trick when he bowls the next over. Brilliant from England.
AND ANOTHER Looks like an early finish for me tonight, Swann gets Marcus North LBW. It was given not out but on review it was shown to be hitting middle stump, half way up and Australia are collapsing like a drunk on ice. Australia 286/8, two more for England to take a 1-0 lead. The draw now 20/1, England 1/150.
01:35 Swann gets one under the bat of Peter Siddle and it hits the stumps but the bails do not dislodge. Incredible. I don't think it will have a major effect on the match though. England should finish this soon.
'SWANN, SWANN WILL TEAR YOU APART AGAIN' the Barmy army sing and the spinner responds by bowling Xavier Doherty for his fourth wicket, Australia nine down and the verge of a massive defeat. This has gone incredibly well for England today, you could have got 10/11 on England at the end of yesterday's play. One more to go. Can Swann get his fifth?
ENGLAND WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 71 RUNS - Graeme Swann gets the last wicket and his figures are 5/91. England took six wickets in 90 minutes and they take a 1-0 series lead. Some great contributions with both bat and ball and they're in control of the series now. That's their 100th test win over Australia and it's the first time the Aussies have suffered an innings defeat on home soil since 1993.
KP has been given the man of the match award, for his double-century and the wicket of Michael Clarke. Plenty of people backed him at a massive 16/1 pre-match, in fact it was the worst possible result for us. England now 4/9 for the series and 1/8 to retain the Ashes.
See you for the Perth Test Match when England will be looking for a 2-0 lead.
