The Ashes Day Four - Betting updates and blog
It's day four of the the first test and England are under pressure after conceding a lead of 220 runs in the first innings. Strauss and Cook are at the crease and will need to bat well in the first session if the Three Lions are to avoid defeat.
The game could be over today but this England team should be capabale of putting up a decent score on what now looks a good pitch for batting. Talk is that they will need to bat for four sessions to save the game. If they did that they would even have two sessions in which to bowl the Aussies out for a win. Unlikely though. Australia 4/9 Draw 9/4 England 14/1
23:48 Strange time to re-start, Captain Strauss strides to the wicket, he is 3/1 to top score. He needs to lead by example after his first over duck in the first innings. Let's hope he bats all day long. Cook faces the first ball and is solid in defence.
00:00 No alarms for England yet, it's 7/2 for a Strauss century, 4/1 for Cook. England move on to 31/0.
00:20 Strauss cuts Watson to the boundary for four. 45/0 England. I don't want to tempt fate but these two look untroubled so far and that's reflected in the prices, the draw has gone from 9/4 to 11/8 in half an hour's play. Australia 4/7 Draw 11/8 England 20/1
00:30 Fifty up for England. After that epic partnership for the Aussies yesterday it's the home team's turn to chase the ball around. Some real price moves now as the draw continues to shorten Australia 4/6 Draw 6/5 England 14/1. Quite a brisk start to the day in terms of run rate. The session runs set at 95.5 (over/under is 17/20)
00:45 Strauss cuts then drives for consecutive boundaries. England going along very nicely indeed and they're 70/0. We currently have England innings runs at 395.5. That would give them a lead of 175.
01:00 Drinks and England 83/0. You can back Australia at evens, the biggest price they've been for a while. Strauss closing in on his 50, he's 6/4 to top score.
01:15 We're enjoying this England fightback and Strauss gets his fifty as they move to 93/0. He's 6/5 to get a ton. This bowling attack is pretty ordinary and England will be kicking themselves they messed up so badly in the first innings. Draw now odds on for the first time. Australia 6/5 Draw 8/11 England 14/1
01:20 100 up for England, Strauss seeing it like a beach ball.
I cursed him, he edges the next one past his stumps for a lucky four then defends a short one up into the air but out of reach of a fielder. Peter Siddle was the bowler, he looks the only one able to run through the batting order. 5/2 for him for the top wicket taker in the innings looks the bet.
01:35 Xavier Doherty is on and he nearly has the England captain caught, Strauss comes down the wicket and tries to hit the inexperienced fielder down the ground. He doesn't connect well though and it goes to Mitchell Johnson.......but he drops the catch. PHEW!! Doherty is 11/4 to get the next wicket. You have to fancy Strauss to get his ton after being given another life. He's 8/15. Australia 21/10 Draw 4/9 England 10/1. Aussie heads starting to drop a little, which is nice.
01:56 Cook gets his fifty, his second of the match, he didn't kick on in the first innings, can he do it this time? He's 11/8 to get a century. England 134/0.
LUNCH England scored 116 runs in that session and didn't lose a wicket, anyone who backed the draw overnight at 9/4 will be delighted, it's now 4/11. England runs set at 435.5 (17/20 over/under). Australia 9/4 Draw 4/11 England 14/1.
02:40 Cook and Strauss back after the lunch break. It's 6/5 for a boundary in the first over. Xavier Doherty the bowler.
Strauss whacks his 12th boundary to move onto 84, we're betting on the total number of boundaries in his innings, it's 8/11 for over 16.5, evens under. Overs looks the bet the way he is playing. England 141/0.
02:57 150 up for England but it's a tad fortunate, Strauss trying to whack one out of the ground only succeeds in knocking it up in the air but there's no fielder to there to take the catch. About time England had some luck. Hilfenhaus is fuming and Strauss edges another soon after through the slip cordon for four runs. Can the Aussie get his revenge, he's 5/2 to take the next wicket. Strauss closing in on his century.
03:03 Doherty hits Strauss on the pad and there is a big appeal, no referral and rightly so, it wasn't out. Australia only have one review left, it's 9/4 that it leads to a decision being overturned.
If this was a timeless test England would be edging towards favouritism, shame they went out in 1939.
03:09 BOOM!! Strauss gets his ton, anyone who backed him at 7/2 this morning will be getting paid around about now. England 166/0. Australia 11/4 Draw 2/7 England 14/1
03:40 England 183/0. Quiet spell in the game. All talk in the William Hill office is whether England could possibly win this match. We don't think so and they're 14/1. Cook on to 71 and he's odds on at 8/13 to get the 2nd England century of the innings.
DRINKS Australia 9/2 Draw 1/6 England 14/1
England look like they could bat blindfold at the minute against this attack. Check out Kevin Pietersen doing just that against a bowling machine - Kevin Pietersen
03:55 STRAUSS GONE!! Marcus North gets the England captain out stumped. Strauss came down the pitch to the part-time spinner and was beaten by the spin and Brad Haddin does the business by taking off the bails. Not good for England. Trott the next man in. Australia 10/3 Draw 1/3 England 14/1 England 188/1, trail be 33 runs.
Strauss made 110 and Cook is on 72 not out, you can get 11/10 on either of those two for top scorer in the innings. Trott is 8/1.
04:13 200 up for England. Total runs market is set at 435.5. That would be a lead of 215. Australia 4/1 Draw 1/5 England 14/1
04:25 Trott drives one for four and England take the lead with only one wicket down. Good performance this, Trott is on 21 from 29 balls. He's 8/11 for a fifty.
TEA 238/1 for England. A lead of 17. They're playing brilliantly really, making 100+ in both sessions and only losing one wicket. It's 16/1 they can force an unlikely victory. Cook is 98 not out, he needs more than 110 to be top pass Andrew Strauss' knock, he is 1/3 to top score. England runs is set at 450.5 (17/20 over or under).
There is more cricket action currently in-play, a one day international between India and New Zealand - BET NOW
05:05 Play resumes and Cook moves on to 94. He's 6/4 to get 150+. New ball due in two overs.
05:15 HERE HE IS! Cook gets his ton. Both openers getting centuries for England, a good sign for the rest of the series. England now 11/8 to win the series. Australia are 6/5 whilst a drawn series is 7/2.
NEW BALL Big moment in the match as Hilfenhaus takes the new ball, if England can see off this they should get at least a draw. Hilfenhaus 5/2 to get the next wicket.
05:40 Not much happening with the new ball for Australia. England will be looking to keep their bowlers in the field for as long as possible ahead of the Adelaide test. England run market now at 465.5 (17/20 over or under).
06:10 This partnership worth 92 as England continue to tick along nicely, Trott looks solid as ever and Cook continues to build on his century. The new ball didn't bring any wickets and none of the Australian bowlers look particularly threatening. Marcus North, the only man to take a wicket this innings, is 4/1 to be the top wicket taker. Australia 7/1 Draw 1/10 England 14/1
Cook looks a great bet at evens to get a 150.
06:25 Trott get his fifty as England batsman continue to dominate. He's 11/8 to get a century, if he does all the top three will have one, a great boost for the rest of the series. Some talk now of a possible England declaration on day five just before tea. England are 14/1 to win, they're scoring quickly, could it happen?
06:45 Oh no! Bad light. That could be it for the day as the umpires decide the light isn't good enough to carry on. An almost perfect day for England. Cook can be proud of himself after batting the entire day. The draw is a massive favourite now at 1/16 but there are possibilities for both teams if everything goes to plan for them on day five. England's lead is 89 with nine wickets remaining.
The cut-off point is 7am so not much chance of any more action today. Don't forget the other international cricket currently in play India v New Zealand in a one day international.
Yes, that's it for the day, if days one and two belonged to Australia, day three was comprehensively won by England. That could prove to be a massive day in the final reckoning for the Ashes, Australia always strong in Brisbane and this is one match they would have had high hopes of a victory in. England's batsman came in this morning under pressure but they're close to batting themselves into a safe position. Australia 5/4 for the series, England 6/4, drawn series 7/2.
Enjoy your day of sport with the highlights being Spurs v Liverpool and The Premier League Snooker Final. We're back at 23:45 tonight for the final day of this test. Can either side force a result? Let's hope it's England Australia 14/1 Draw 1/20 England 20/1
