Bookies toast best Tour de France ever
This year's Tour de France has broken all previous cycling betting turnover records with almost half a million being staked on the competition with William Hill alone.
Mark Cavendish has resulted in a small five figure loss for winning the Green Jersey, while Samuel Sanchez lost almost £15,000 in the King of the Mountains classification.
"Cavendish and Sanchez started the Tour as the favourites for both the Green Jersey and King of the Mountains and they were both very well backed by our cycling punters," said Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly.
"What did save us, however, was that so many of our punters believed that either Contador or Andy Schleck were going to win the Yellow Jersey, we actually made quite a killing on Cadel Evans."
Hills biggest turnover stage came when Pierre Rolland won at L'Alpe d Huez when almost £30,000 was staked in just one day.
"Over the course of the past decade, our cycling markets have been becoming increasingly popular, but we were not expecting turnover to be so high this year. We have been blown away by the popularity of this year's Tour."
