Carling Cup first round draw
The first round of the Carling Cup has been drawn today as the build-up to the new season gathers steam. The first round sees the Championship, League 1 and League 2 sides drawn together with the exception of Newcastle and Middlesbrough who are given byes to the second round.
The Premier League sides will join the party in the second round also, with the exception of the sides that are participating in the Champions League and the Europa League who join the competition a round later.
Highlights of the draw include newly-promoted Burton Albion facing Reading at the Madejski Stadium while Burton's fellow promoted side Torquay travel to Crystal Palace.
Relegated Southampton will face the other 'hampton', Northampton, at St Mary's. Barnet will face neighbours Watford at Underhill while West Brom will make the trip north to Gigg Lane to face Bury.
Predictably the draw has not changed the betting market at all with none of the favourites involved in the draw. Defending champions Manchester United are 11/2 second favourites to retain the trophy while 2008 runners-up Chelsea are 9/2 favourites.
The other two members of the Big Four, Arsenal and Liverpool unsurprisingly complete the top four in the betting as joint third favs at 13/2. Big-spending Manchester City are at 9/1 with last year's runners-up and 2008 winners Tottenham 12/1 shots. It is 14/1 and upwards for the rest.
The full first round draw can be found below with all the ties being played the week commencing 10 August.
