Barclays Premier League Opta Facts –December 28-29

West Ham United v West Bromwich Albion

  • West Ham have met West Brom five times at Upton Park in the Barclays Premier League, and 10 different managers have taken charge.
  • West Bromwich Albion have only won one of their last nine Barclays Premier League meetings with West Ham United (D4 L4).
  • The Hammers have won just one point in their last five Premier League games (D1 L4).
  • West Ham have failed to find the net in nine Premier League matches this season (a joint-league high), and have scored just three goals in their last five games.
  • However, no side has kept more clean sheets than West Ham United in the Premier League this season (8).
  • These two sides have won the fewest points in the Premier League in December 2013 - West Brom (1), West Ham (2).
  • West Brom are on a run of eight Premier League games without a victory (D4 L4) - the longest such run in the competition currently.
  • The Baggies have won only three points in their last six Premier League away games (D3 L3), but one of these came in their meeting with Spurs on Boxing Day.
  • Carlton Cole has three goals this season in the Premier League - one more than in 27 appearances last season in the competition.
  • West Ham have scored just 20% (3 of 15) of their goals in the first half of matches this season; a league-low.

 

Aston Villa v Swansea City

  • Christian Benteke scored in both Barclays Premier League meetings with Swansea last season, but he will miss this match through injury.
  • Swansea have lost eight of their nine previous league trips to Villa Park (W1), failing to score in all eight defeats.
  • Aston Villa have won only seven points in their nine Premier League home games this season (W2 D1 L6) - no side has won fewer (Fulham and Sunderland also with seven).
  • Villa have lost four successive Premier League matches, scoring just one goal in the process.
  • The Villans have not lost five successive Premier League matches since January 2001 (the only time it has happened to them in the PL previously)
  • Swansea have won only two points in their last four Premier League matches (D2 L2).
  • Aston Villa have scored just one first half goal in their last 13 Premier League games, and have not scored a single first half goal at home this season.
  • Aston Villa have failed to score in five of their last six Barclays Premier League home games.
  • Swansea have taken only 38 points from 36 Premier League games in 2013.

Hull City v Fulham

  • Fulham are the only team that Hull City have faced more than once at home in the Barclays Premier League and maintained a 100% win rate (P2 W2).
  • Fulham have only scored more than once on one of their last 10 trips to face Hull in the league.
  • This is Fulham's 13th season in the Premier League and only once (2-0 v Stoke in 2010) have they won their final game of the year.
  • Hull have won just two of their previous 16 Premier League games in the month of December (D6 L8) and have the worst points per game record in the month of all current PL sides (0.75).
  • Fulham have conceded a goal in 15 of their 18 Premier League games this season, more often than any other side.

  • Manchester City have won five and lost only one of their last 10 home league meetings with Crystal Palace (D4).
  • The Eagles have both scored and conceded in nine of their last 10 league meetings with the Citizens.
  • Palace have taken just two points from eight Premier League trips to Manchester (both City and United).
  • City are unbeaten in their final game of the year since returning to the Premier League in 2002-03 (W5 D6).
  • Manchester City have equalled the Premier League record for goals scored after 18 games in a season (53 - level with themselves in 2011-12). The PL record after 19 games is also 53.
  • Manchester City are the only team in the Premier League this season yet to drop a point at home (P9 W9 D0 L0). They have also scored in each of their last 59 Premier League home games.
  • Alvaro Negredo has now scored in each of his last nine competitive appearances at the Etihad Stadium.

Norwich City v Manchester United

  • Norwich have lost 13 and won just two of their last 16 league meetings with Manchester United (W2 D1).
  • The Red Devils have lost two of their last three Premier League games at Carrow Road without getting on the scoresheet.
  • Norwich have scored a total of only eight goals in 12 Premier League games against Man Utd.
  • Man Utd have scored five goals in their final Premier League game of the year three times (in 1992, 1993 and 2009).
  • Wayne Rooney has assisted 19 goals since the start of last season in the Premier League; currently this is four more than any other player (Gerrard/Hazard on 15).
  • Norwich City have only lost four of 18 Barclays Premier League home games in 2013 (W6 D8), but one of these came on Boxing Day versus Fulham.
  • Gary Hooper has scored in four successive Premier League games at Carrow Road.
  • Indeed, Hooper is the first Norwich player to score in four consecutive Premier League games at Carrow Road.

Cardiff City v Sunderland

  • Cardiff have not met Sunderland in the top-flight since 1956/57, when they won one and drew one of two meetings.
  • Sunderland have won their last two trips to Cardiff in the league without conceding.
  • Sunderland have won only one of their 12 final games of the year in the Premier League (3-1 v Bolton in 2007)
  • Sunderland have kept three successive clean sheets in the Premier League - the longest run seen in the PL this season is Southampton's four in a row (Sept-Oct).
  • Vito Mannone has kept five clean sheets in eight Premier League starts this season for Sunderland.
  • Cardiff City have lost two successive Premier League games, they have not lost three league games in succession since November 2009.
  • Despite playing 18 games fewer in 2013 than Sunderland (36), Cardiff have won just three games fewer in the Premier League this calendar year (4) than their opponents (7).
  • David Marshall (70) has made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
  • Sunderland have lost more points from leading positions than any other side this season (11) in the Premier League.

Everton v Southampton

  • Everton have won three and lost none of their last seven Barclays Premier League meetings with Southampton (D4).
  • The Saints have only won one of 14 Barclays Premier League trips to Goodison Park (D3 L10).
  • Everton have only scored seven goals in two Premier League games, one of which was a 7-1 home win vs Southampton in November 1996.
  • Everton have lost just three of their last 37 Premier League home games (W24 D10 L3), but one of those defeats came on Boxing Day against Sunderland.
  • Jay Rodriguez has scored seven goals in his last 10 Premier League games for Southampton with five of the last six coming away from home.
  • Rickie Lambert has scored or assisted nine goals in his last 10 Premier League games for Southampton (four goals & five assists).
  • Romelu Lukaku has gone five successive Premier League appearances and 451 minutes without scoring in the competition.
  • Eight of Everton's Premier League goals this season have come from defenders - more than any other club.
  • Morgan Schneiderlin has created the most goalscoring chances without having assisted a goal in the Premier League in 2013 (33).
  • Tim Howard will miss this match through suspension - he has only missed two Premier League games for Everton since the end of September 2007.

 

Newcastle United v Arsenal

  • This fixture saw the only four goal comeback to date in Premier League history, when Newcastle came back from 0-4 down to draw 4-4 in February 2011.
  • Arsenal have lost just one of their last 12 Barclays Premier League games at St James Park (D7 L4).
  • Newcastle have conceded a total of 14 goals in their last five Premier League games against Arsenal.
  • Arsenal enjoyed a 7-3 win against Newcastle last season (at home), one of only six games in Premier League history to see 10+ goals (Before Dec 21st).
  • That 7-3 game was these two sides' final game of 2012 and Newcastle have conceded 24 goals in their last seven final PL games of the year.
  • Arsenal have lost only one of their last 17 final games of the year (0-1 to Sheffield United in 2006).
  • Alongside Spurs, Arsenal have won the most points away from home in the Premier League this season (19).
  • Olivier Giroud has only scored one of his 18 Premier League goals outside of London, but this solitary strike came in the north-east (at Sunderland) earlier this season.
  • Arsenal have won the most Premier League points in 2013, and their current 79 point tally in the year cannot be surpassed by any other side.

Chelsea v Liverpool

  • Chelsea have lost three and won just one of their last five Barclays Premier League home meetings with the Reds (D1).
  • Luis Suarez scored a second-half equaliser in both Barclays Premier League meetings with Chelsea last season.
  • Chelsea have won only two of their last 13 Premier League encounters with Liverpool (W2 D4 L7)
  • Five of Chelsea's last seven Premier League wins against Liverpool have come under Jose Mourinho.
  • Liverpool have scored 29 goals in their last 14 trips to London in the Premier League (2.07 per game)
  • Liverpool have conceded a total of only three goals in their last nine end-of-year games.
  • The Reds have scored more goals in 2013 than any other Premier League side (83).
  • No player has created more goalscoring chances in the Premier League in 2013-14 than Eden Hazard (46, level with Samir Nasri).

  • The Potters have only failed to score in two of their 10 previous Barclays Premier League meetings with Spurs.
  • Stoke have played 29 Premier League games in London and have scored more than once in only two of them (17 goals in total).
  • This game will take place exactly six years after the Tottenham 6-4 Reading game, one of only six Premier League games to see 10+ goals (before Dec 21st).
  • Stoke have won just five points away from home in the Premier League this season; a joint league low along with Hull (W1 D2 L6).
  • Stoke have conceded 15 goals in their last five Premier League away matches.
  • Spurs have conceded a goal in each of their last eight Premier League matches - no side is currently on a longer run than this.
  • After receiving just one red card in their previous 35 Premier League games, Stoke were given two red cards in their last match against Newcastle on Boxing Day.
  • Tim Sherwood has won four points from his first two Premier League games in charge of Spurs (W1 D1) - two more than Andre Villas-Boas managed in his first three PL games in
