Bundesliga Opta Facts - 21-23 September

1. FC Nürnberg - Eintracht Frankfurt

  • Nürnberg have lost only 1 of their last 8 BL meetings with Frankfurt (3 wins, 4 draws) and have failed to find the net on only 1 of those occasions: in a 0-2 loss at Frankfurt on September 25 2010.
  • Overall, however, Frankfurt won an average of 1.3 points in their BL visits to Nürnberg - their best away output against any of the current teams in the top flight.
  • Nürnberg has never won more points from their first 3 games of a BL season than now (7). The other 3 seasons in which they started with 2 wins and a draw (1963/64, 1967/68 und 2006/07) saw them finish among the top 9 teams of the league.
  • Frankfurt are only the 2nd newly-promoted team in BL history to start a season with 3 wins (after Bochum in 2002/03). The only other season that they managed this was in 1966/67, when they ended the season ranked 4th in the table.
  • Only Bayern have scored more goals (12) than Frankfurt (9, like Hannover), and Bayern are also the only team to have fired more shots (55) than Eintracht (54).
  • Frankfurt have the 2nd highest average possession in the league (63%, Bayern has 67%) and have completed 83% of their passes - 3rd in the league after Bayern (89%) and Dortmund (84%).
  • Nürnberg, on the other hand, have the worst passing accuracy (69%) and the 2nd lowest average possession (39%, Fürth have 35%) in the league.
  • Nürnberg have scored 4 goals from set-piece situations (no penalty goals among those) - the most in the league with Hannover. 3 goals have come from corner kicks, the most of all teams.
  • Hiroshi Kiyotake had a hand in all 3 Nürnberg goals at Gladbach (1 goal, 2 assists). The new signing has been involved in more goals than any other player for the club (4) and has created 10 chances (like Bremen's Aaron Hunt), only Hannover's Szabolcs Huszti has created more.
  • 6 of Frankfurt's 9 goals have been scored by new signings Aigner, Lanig (2 each), Inui and Occean (1 each). No other team has more than 4 goals scored by new signings.
  • Hanno Balitsch's next BL game will be his 300th in the top flight - among all current BL players, only Bayern's Claudio Pizarro and Fürth's Gerald Asamoah have more appearances.
  • Nürnberg's Timothy Chandler was once a part of Frankfurt's youth squad, while Frankfurt's Martin Lanig played in Nürnberg's junior team.

  • Bayern have equaled a Bundesliga record for the best start, gaining the full 9 points from their first 3 games with a goal difference of 12-2 - only Dortmund had this record after 3 games in 1994/95.
  • Schalke have gained 7 points with a goal difference of 7-3 - the last time they got off to a better start was in 2000/01 when they won all of their first 3 and finished the season 2nd in the table.
  • Bayern have won all 5 competitive games this season (excluding their CL clash with Valencia) - the last time they managed this was in 2000/01 (6 wins) when they celebrated the title and the CL crown at season's end.
  • Bayern have won 11 of their last 13 BL games (1 draw, 1 loss), including the last 6 in a row.
  • Spanning back to last term, Schalke are unbeaten in their last 8 competitive games (6 wins, 2 draws).
  • Manuel Neuer will face his former team for the 3rd time and has yet to concede a goal against them. Neuer played for Schalke from 1991 to 2011 and made 156 BL appearances for the club.
  • Mario Mandzukic has scored 6 goals in 5 competitive games - the Croatian has found the net in every game for his new club and is the first new signing ever to manage this for Bayern.
  • Huub Stevens has lost both of his meetings with Jupp Heynckes as a manager - in 2003 he lost 1-3 with Hertha, while in 2012 he lost 0-2 at Bayern with his current club.
  • Jupp Heynckes was a Schalke manager for a little more than 1 full season (2003/04 - early in 2004/05) - his points average of 1.39 per game has been topped by every single one of his successors!
  • In Mario Mandzukic and Thomas Müller (3 goals each), Bayern have the joint leaders among BL goal scorers this season.

VfL Wolfsburg - SpVgg Greuther Fürth

  • Wolfsburg prevailed in the 2 teams‘ only previous meeting in all competitions - they won 3-1 at Fürth in the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) 2006/07.
  • The only remaining player from that game on both teams' rosters is Fürth's Thomas Kleine - the central defender returned to Fürth after stints at Hannover (2007/08) and Gladbach (2008-10).
  • Fürth are unbeaten in their last 8 league games, winning 3 and drawing 5. However, they lost 0-2 at 3rd league Offenbach in the first round of the German Cup this season.
  • Wolfsburg have failed to find the net in their last 2 games, but manager Felix Magath provides hope: Since late in 2003, no team that he has managed has ever gone more than 2 games without scoring (the last was Stuttgart in 2003, 3 games).
  • Wolfsburg have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 8 home games, conceding a total of 17 goals (2.1 p/g) in that time span.
  • Wolfsburg have scored only 1 goal in their first 3 BL games, equaling their worst output from 2002/03 and 2006/07. A blank vs Fürth would see them set a new record low for the club in the top flight.
  • Fürth have won the lowest percentage of duels so far this term (42%), while Wolfsburg have the 3rd highest success rate (53%).
  • Wolfsburg have committed the most fouls of all BL teams this season (72 - an average of 24 pg), while Fürth have committed the 2nd most (62) and have received the most yellow cards (7).
  • Fürth have endured the lowest shooting accuracy in the BL this season (20%), with Wolfsburg the 2nd lowest (31%).
  • When Felix Magath became the new Schalke manager in 2009/10, he decided to make do without the services of previous caretaker manager Michael Büskens - the latter moved on and became Fürth gaffer.
  • Josue could make his 150th BL appearance - only 5 players have played more BL games for Wolfsburg than the Brazilian.

His only goal for his new club Augsburg came in a 2-0 win at 4th division Wilhelmshaven in the German Cup.

  • If Hamburg fail to score against Dortmund, it would be the 3rd home game in a row for them without a goal. This would also equal the club's negative record in the top flight - the last time this happened was in
  • April/May 2008.
  • Hamburg have never endured a worse start to a BL season than now - in 1972/73, they also lost their first 3 and had a goal difference of -4, but managed to score 1 more goal (3-7 instead of the current 2-6).
  • Hamburg scored their last headed goal in the BL on January 28 when Mladen Petric (who has left the club) found the net at Berlin (2-1).
  • Only 1 of Hamburg's outfield players has had more touches than goalkeeper Rene Adler (167). Adler also has the most saves in the league (17, same as Frankfurt's Trapp).
  • Rafael van der Vaart won his last 3 BL games vs Dortmund, keeping a clean sheet in all of those. He is the only player on Hamburg's current roster with a positive BL record against Dortmund (3 wins, 1 draw).
  • Thorsten Fink has a points average of 1.04 pg - the worst record among all Hamburg managers with at least 28 games (like he has now).
  • Thorsten Fink was born in Dortmund and played for Borussia from 1983 to 1989 - one of his clubmates was current director of sport Michael Zorc. Fink, however, never made an appearance for Dortmund's first team in a competitive game.
