Capital One Cup 2nd Round Opta Facts

Aston Villa v Notts County

Aston Villa and Notts County have met twice before in the League Cup, Villa winning through in 1970/71 and County triumphing over two legs in 1982/83.

Eight of county's last 10 games in this competition (including this one) have been on the road.

These sides have not met in any competition since the 1996/97 FA Cup, Villa winning 3-0 in a replay at Villa Park after a 0-0 draw.

Aston Villa were beaten 1-0 at home by third tier Leyton Orient at this stage last term, while the Villans were knocked out by fourth tier Bradford City in the 2012/13 semi-finals.


Barnsley v Everton

Barnsley have not beaten Everton in any competition since December 1951 (D2 L6, including the Full Members Cup).

Everton have been eliminated in their last five away League Cup games, last winning back in September 2009 at Hull.

Barnsley have only won one of their last nine League Cup games in normal or extra time, though they have won two of their last four via a penalty shootout.

Indeed the Tykes have failed to score in five of their last six League Cup matches at Oakwell.


Birmingham v Gillingham

Birmingham have won seven and drawn one of their eight previous competitive matches against Gillingham.

Gillingham have won their last three away League Cup games 2-1.

The Gills have not made round 3 since 2005/06; they beat Premier League Portsmouth at this stage 10 years ago.

Brum's last 11 League Cup games have seen them alternate between winning and not winning (excluding penalties); they beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 last time.


Burton v Middlesbrough

Burton won their one previous meeting with Middlesbrough 2-1 in the 2010/11 FA Cup.

Middlesbrough have scored in all but one of their last 15 away League Cup games.

Burton's two previous forays into round 3 have seen them eliminate a higher ranked side at this stage (Leicester in 2012/13, QPR last term).

The Teesiders have won 10 of their last 11 League Cup matches against sides from lower divisions (L1).


Bury v Leicester

After failing to score in five successive League Cup games (2006-2010), Bury have netted in their last seven (16 goals).

Leicester have won their last five against Bury in all competitions, scoring 16 times in the process.

The Shakers have mustered only one clean sheet in their last 17 League Cup games and none in their last 12.

Leicester's last three away League Cup games against third tier sides have seen them win despite conceding exactly twice.


Crystal Palace v Shrewsbury

The Eagles, beaten at home by Newcastle last season, have not lost consecutive home League Cup games since 1965.

Shrewsbury are unbeaten in seven against Palace in all competitions (W5 D2).

The one previous cup tie between these sides came in the 1958/59 FA Cup, with Crystal Palace winning a second replay 4-1 after two 2-2 draws.

The Shrews have found the net in 12 of their last 13 League Cup matches.


Doncaster v Ipswich

Doncaster have scored in each of their last 16 home League Cup games.

Ipswich have won five of their last six meetings with Doncaster (L1), beating them 6-0 in South Yorkshire in 2011.

Ipswich have not made it past round 2 since they reached the semi-finals in 2010/11.

The Tractor Boys have lost their last four on the road in this competition, including the second leg of that semi-final at the Emirates v Arsenal.


Fulham v Sheff Utd

Fulham have scored in each of their last 22 home League Cup games, averaging 2.68 goals per game.

Sheffield United have won seven and drawn three of 10 FA and League Cup matches against Fulham.

The Blades' last trip to Craven Cottage saw them score a 120th minute winner in an FA Cup replay (February 2014).

Fulham's only defeat to a lower ranked side in the League Cup at Craven Cottage since 1990 came against Wycombe in 2006, with the Whites winning their other 10 in this period.


Hartlepool v Bournemouth

Hartlepool last made the third round in 2008/09, beating Premier League West Brom 3-1 at home at this stage back then.

Bournemouth have kept six consecutive clean sheets against lower ranked sides in the competition, though this is their first ever match in the League Cup as a top-flight team.

These sides met in League One action just three seasons ago; they are now separated by three tiers.

The one previous League Cup tie between the sides went to a third replay (1974/75 round 2), with Hartlepool eventually winning 1-0 after three draws.


Hull v Rochdale

Hull's last home League Cup defeat came in the first round in 2011 when The Tigers lost 2-0 to Macclesfield Town.

Rochdale's last away League Cup win was 2-0 away at QPR in the second round in 2011.

The two sides have never met before in the League Cup.

Hull's last meeting with Rochdale was in the old Division Three in March 2004, with Hull winning the game 1-0.


Luton v Stoke

Luton have won five of their last seven home League Cup games.

Since promotion to the Premier League in 2008, Stoke have lost just one second round fixture, a 4-3 home defeat to Swindon in 2012.

This is the first meeting between the two sides since February 2007.

The Potters have only failed to score in one of their last 10 away League Cup games.


MK Dons v Cardiff

MK Dons have won four of their last five second round games, losing the other away at Sunderland in 2013.

Cardiff have won three of their last four away League Cup games.

This is the third meeting in 11 years between the two sides in the League Cup second round, Cardiff winning the previous two games in 2004 and 2008.

The Bluebirds have won eight of their previous nine second round ties.

Newcastle v Northampton

Newcastle are unbeaten in 21 second round games (W19 D2), last losing in 1990 to Middlesbrough.

Northampton last progressed to the third round in 2010.

The two sides haven't met since January 1987 when Newcastle won an FA Cup tie 2-1 at St. James' Park.

The Cobblers have eliminated Premier League opposition twice in the last seven years, knocking out Bolton in 2008 and Liverpool in 2010.


Peterborough v Charlton

Peterborough have won their last three League Cup games at London Road, scoring 12 and conceding none in that time.

Charlton have lost their last five away games in the League Cup, not tasting victory on the road since a 2-0 win at Swindon in 2007.

The two sides have met five times in the League Cup (though not since 1979), with two wins apiece and one draw in previous games.

The Addicks have won five of the last six meetings between the two sides (D1).


Portsmouth v Reading

Portsmouth have lost one of their last 15 games with Reading at Fratton Park (W9 D5).

Reading have only failed to score in one of their previous nine second round games, a 6-0 reverse to Peterborough in 2013.

Pompey last reached the third round in 2010, losing 2-1 to Leicester.

The Royals have progressed in 15 of their last 18 League Cup ties against sides from a lower division.


Preston v Watford

Preston are unbeaten in their only two games against Watford in the League Cup, drawing 1-1 with them in 1971 before winning the replay 2-1.

Watford have only reached the Third Round once in their previous five seasons (2013/14).

The Lilywhites have failed to score just once in their previous 17 League Cup games, scoring 36 goals in that time.

The Hornets last failed to score in a League Cup game in August 2007, scoring in 17 consecutive games since then.


QPR v Carlisle

QPR have been eliminated from the League Cup by lower-league opposition in seven of the last 10 seasons, with four of those defeats at Loftus Road.

Carlisle have met QPR four times in the League Cup, losing each of those games including a 4-0 defeat at Loftus Road in August 2008.

The Hoops have lost four of their last five home League Cup games.

The Cumbrians have progressed beyond the second round just twice in 39 years (Third Round in 2009 and 2012).


Rotherham v Norwich

Rotherham have not got past the second round of the League Cup since the 2008/09 campaign, losing to Stoke in the Fourth Round.

Norwich have not been eliminated at this stage of the competition since a 4-0 home defeat to MK Dons in 2011.

The Millers have won five of their last six home games in the League Cup (L1), scoring in every game.

Norwich have never lost to Rotherham in the League Cup in five attempts (W3 D2).


Sheff Wed v Oxford

The Owls have not lost at home in the League Cup since a 3-0 defeat against Everton in September 2007 (W5 D2). They were however eliminated via penalties following one of those draws.

Oxford United have not reached the Third Round since 2002/03, losing out to Aston Villa.

Sheffield Wednesday have won four of their last five League Cup ties against a team from a lower division (L1).

The sides have not faced each other since their League Cup second round tie in 1996, Oxford prevailing 2-1 on aggregate.


Sunderland v Exeter

Sunderland have not been eliminated at this stage since a 1-0 loss to Brighton in 2011.

Exeter's first round win at Swindon was their first away win in the League Cup since 1992.

The Grecians have not scored more than two goals in a League Cup match since that 4-1 away win against Birmingham City.

There were seven goals in the last meeting between these two teams in the League Cup, Sunderland winning 5-2 in a Fourth Round replay in 1989/90.


Swansea v York

Swansea were the first Welsh team to win this competition when they beat Bradford City 5-0 in 2013.

York have not played against a top division side in this competition since a 2-0 loss against Leicester City in 1996.

The last two meetings between these teams have been 0-0 draws.

The two sides have never faced each other in the League Cup.


Walsall v Brighton

Walsall's first round win against Nottingham Forest was the first time since 2006 that they have beaten a side in a higher league than them in the League Cup.

Brighton have won three of their last four away League Cup games (L1), having lost seven in a row on the road prior to this run.

A game has not finished goalless between these two sides since 1969, a run of 35 games.

Indeed, Brighton have not been involved in a goalless draw in the League Cup since 1986 (63 games).


West Brom v Port Vale

West Brom have only failed to score in one of their last 13 League Cup ties.

Port Vale have never beaten West Brom in the League Cup (D1 L1).

Port Vale scored with their only shot on target during their first round victory against Burnley.

The Baggies are unbeaten in eight games against Vale (W4 D4), since a 3-1 defeat in the 1996 Anglo-Italian Cup.


Wolves v Barnet

Wolves put five past Barnet in the second leg of their previous League Cup fixture in the 1998/99 season.
Barnet, who won at Millwall in round one, have never won two away games in the same edition of the League Cup.

Wolves have not kept a clean sheet at home in the competition since 2011.
