Capital One Cup - Round 3 Facts

 

Arsenal V Southampton

  • Arsenal have made it past Round 3 in each of the last 11 seasons, though have conceded exactly once in their last four.
  • Southampton have won their last three Round 3 ties, scoring exactly twice in each game.
  • The Gunners have never faced elimination at the hands of Southampton in the League Cup, progressing on each of the four occasions in which they have met.
  • Arsenal have scored in each of their last 17 encounters with Southampton in all competitions, winning 10 (D5 L2).
  • The Saints are winless in their last 10 (all comps) against the Gunners, losing six and drawing four.

Cardiff V Bournemouth

  • Cardiff are unbeaten in their last 11 League Cup games at home, winning 10 (D1).
  • This will be Bournemouth's first appearance in the Third Round since October 2004 when they were eliminated by Cardiff on penalties.
  • Cardiff have never kept a clean sheet against Bournemouth in the League Cup, shipping 17 goals in seven matches.
  • Bournemouth have in fact netted in each of their last 23 against the Welsh side in all competitions, last failing to score against them back in September 1946.
  • Cardiff have made it through to the next round on each of the last two occasions that they've faced the Cherries (October 2004 & August 2008).

Derby V Reading

  • This will be the first meeting between these sides in the League Cup since September 1994 when Derby ran out 2-0 victors in the Second Round second leg.
  • 22 goals have been scored across Reading's last four Third Round ties, an average of 5.5 per game.
  • Derby have won only one of their last 14 matches against Reading in all competitions, losing 10 (D3).
  • Reading have gone seven games unbeaten against Derby, though all of those fixtures have been in league competition (W5 D2).
  • Pavel Pogrebnyak scored twice at the iPro Stadium last term as Reading claimed a 3-1 victory over Derby in the Championship.

Leyton Orient V Sheff Utd

  • Leyton Orient have failed to find the back of the net in six of their last seven Round 3 fixtures (incl. replays), though they netted in their most recent clash versus Blackburn in 2011 (2-3).
  • The Blades have gone 12 games without keeping a clean sheet in the League Cup, shipping 25 in the process.
  • The O's are winless in eight against the Blades in all competitions, losing four and drawing four.
  • Dean Cox scored in both games between these two sides last season (League One only).
  • This will be the first League Cup meeting between Leyton Orient and Sheffield United.

Liverpool V Middlesbrough

  • Liverpool have progressed past Round 3 in the League Cup in nine of the last 12 seasons, though two of the three eliminations were by lower league opposition (Northampton 2010/11 & Crystal Palace 2005/06).
  • Middlesbrough have won five of their last six away League Cup ties, losing the other.
  • This will be the sixth time that the two sides have been drawn together in the League Cup with Middlesbrough progressing three times.
  • Liverpool have gone 25 games unbeaten at home to Middlesbrough in all competitions (W19 D6).
  • Middlesbrough won the most recent clash between the two sides in 2009 in the Premier League (2-0 at the Riverside Stadium).

MK Dons V Bradford

  • This will be MK Dons' fifth appearance in the Third Round of the League Cup. They've never made it through to the Fourth Round.
  • Bradford City have been eliminated in five of their last seven League Cup encounters with opposition from the same division.
  • No player has scored more goals in this year's Capital One Cup competition than Benik Afobe (3).
  • Ben Reeves has provided more assists than any other player in this season's competition (3). Indeed, two of which came against Manchester United in the previous round.
  • All three of Bradford's goals so far have arrived in the final 10 minutes.

Shrewsbury V Norwich

  • Shrewsbury haven't won three consecutive matches in the League Cup since 1961. The Shrews reached the Semi-Final stages that year and it remains their best campaign in the competition.
  • This will be the first League Cup meeting between the two sides since September 1980.
  • Norwich have won their last five clashes with the Shrews in all competitions, netting two or more goals in each match.
  • Shrewsbury's only previous victory over Norwich in the League Cup came back in December 1960 (1-0).
  • The Canaries have made it past Round 3 of the League Cup in each of the last two seasons.

Sunderland V Stoke

  • Sunderland have made it past Round 3 of the League Cup in four of their last five attempts.
  • Stoke have won both of their previous League Cup clashes with the Black Cats, keeping a clean sheet in each game (R2 1972/73 & R2 1978/79).
  • Sunderland have won seven and drawn five of their last 12 encounters with Stoke City on home soil, though all of these were in league competition.
  • There has been a red card shown in four of the last five league matches between these two sides (two apiece).
  • Stoke have scored just once across their last six away trips to Sunderland (D2 L4).

Swansea V Everton

  • Swansea have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six League Cup fixtures. The 2013 winners conceded three in the Third Round last term to Birmingham as they exited the competition.
  • Everton have won only once in their last seven away fixtures in the League Cup (v Hull in 2009/10), losing five (D1).
  • Swansea have yet to beat Everton in any competition, losing 15 and drawing five.
  • Leighton Baines has netted from the penalty spot in each of his last two appearances versus Swansea.
  • This will be the first ever Capital One Cup meeting between Swansea City and Everton.

Fulham V Doncaster

  • Fulham have only made it past Round 3 once since 2005, though it was last term when they were eventually knocked out by Leicester City.
  • Doncaster last made it into Round 4 of the League Cup in the 2005/06 campaign.
  • These two sides were drawn together in the Second Round of the 1983/84 League Cup with Fulham winning both legs 3-1.
  • Fulham have lost only one of their last 13 home clashes with Doncaster Rovers in all competitions (W9 D3).

Burton V Brighton

  • Burton have never reached the Fourth Round of the League Cup.
  • This will be the first ever competitive meeting between Burton and Brighton.
  • Burton have netted two or more goals in seven of their last eight League Cup matches.
  • The Seagulls last made it into Round 4 of the League Cup in the 1979/80 campaign.
  • Burton's 1-0 victory over QPR in the previous round was their first clean sheet in the competition.
  • Brighton have shipped two or more goals in four of their last five in the League Cup.

Chelsea V Bolton

  • The Blues have progressed in seven of their last eight Third Round ties, keeping a clean sheet in each of the matches in which they made the next round.
  • Bolton lost their most recent clash against Chelsea in the League Cup, 4-0 in October 2009 (Fourth Round).
  • Chelsea have won their last nine against Bolton in all competitions, keeping seven clean sheets in the process.
  • In fact, Bolton are winless in their last 18 versus the Blues (all comps), losing 15 and drawing three.
  • Didier Drogba scored when the two sides last met at Stamford Bridge in February 2012 (Premier League). The Blues ran out 3-0 winners as Frank Lampard and David Luiz also got on the scoresheet.

Crystal Palace V Newcastle

  • This will be the first meeting between the two sides in the Capital One Cup.
  • Newcastle have made it past the Third Round in three of their last four at this stage, losing only to Manchester United in 2012/13.
  • No player has found the back of the net more often in this term's competition than Dwight Gayle (3).
  • Newcastle have won seven and drawn two of their last nine against Palace.

Man City V Sheff Wed

  • Manchester City have alternated between progressing and exiting at the Third Round in each of the last five seasons. They progressed at this stage last term and eventually won the competition.
  • Sheffield Wednesday last made it into Round 4 of the League Cup in the 2001/02 campaign.
  • Man City have scored two or more goals in each of their last eight clashes in the League Cup, netting 26 in the process.
  • City are unbeaten in nine against the Owls, winning five and drawing four.
  • Since his arrival at Manchester City Edin Dzeko has scored nine goals in 10 appearances in the League Cup.

Tottenham V Nottm Forest

  • Spurs have made it past Round 3 in the League Cup in eight of their last 10 attempts at this stage of the competition.
  • Forest have been eliminated in each of their last three Round 3 clashes.
  • Forest have eliminated Spurs in each of the last three ties in which they've been drawn together in the League Cup (1989/90, 1991/92, 1992/93).
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last four against the Tricky Trees in all competitions (W3 D1).
  • Forest have netted in 15 of their last 16 trips to White Hart Lane in all competitions, winning 10 (D4 L2).

West Brom V Hull

  • West Brom have been eliminated in each of their last three Round 3 clashes.
  • This will be the first meeting between these two sides in the League Cup.
  • After winning five in a row between 1992 and 2008, West Brom are without a win in five against Hull City in all competitions, losing three (D2).
