Celtic favourites in SPL betting

Punters are betting on the Scottish Premier League being down to a two-horse race once again – and the odds suggest Celtic will be the football club winning their fourth consecutive SPL title.

Celtic are 8/11 to win the SPL, making their Glasgow rivals Rangers look a long way back in the betting at evens.

With Rangers out of Europe and just having lost Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa, Walter Smith looks to have a tough job ahead at Ibrox, while Gordon Strachan, his opposite number at Celtic Park, can seemingly do no wrong.

The gap between the top two and the rest is also illustrated in the betting. After the Old Firm in the odds come Hearts at a price of 125/1.

The days when George Burley made the Edinburgh club title challengers must be a distant memory to Jambos fans. Like their neighbours Hibs and the rapidly improving Dundee United, Hearts seem a long way from being able to have a proper chance of winning the SPL.

Motherwell – third in the Scottish Premier League last season – could play kingmaker this term, as on their day they have a team that can beat anyone in Scotland and their results against Celtic and Rangers could dictate who eventually wins the Scots Prem. But Mark McGhee's lightweight squad could be distracted by their European commitments, and that could prevent Motherwell from having a real go at taking on the top two.

Odds of 250/1 look a fair reflection of their chances, and once again highlight the fact that the SPL will be a battle between Rangers and worth favourites Celtic.
