Champions League Opta Facts - Match Day Two

 

Barcelona - Bayer Leverkusen

o   Barcelona have won their last five Champions League games against Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals and conceding four. Leverkusen's only CL win against the Blaugrana came in September 2001 but it was in Germany (2-1).

o   Leverkusen have lost their three Champions League away games against Barcelona (2 goals scored, 11 conceded), their last trip to the Camp Nou ending in a 7-1 defeat back in March 2012.

o   Barcelona have never failed to win their first two games in the group stages of the Champions League since the new format in 2003/04.

o   Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen have never won their first two games in the Champions League group stages.

o   Barcelona have won 26 of their last 33 Champions League games at the Camp Nou (D6 L1). Their only defeat in that run came against Bayern Munich in the 2012/13 semi-final (0-3).

o   Barcelona have kept three clean sheets in as many CL games at the Camp Nou in 2015, winning 1-0 against Manchester City, 2-0 against Paris SG and finally 3-0 against Bayern Munich.

o   Barcelona have won the Champions League in four of the last 10 seasons. No other team has won it more than once in the same period.

o   Barcelona are looking to become the first team since AC Milan to win back-to-back European Cup/Champions League titles. The Rossoneri did it in 1989 and 1990.

o   Barcelona have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in seven of the last eight campaigns. The only exception was in 2013/14 season, when they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid.

BATE Borisov - Roma

o   This is the first ever competitive game between BATE Borisov and Roma.

o   BATE have never beaten Italian opposition in European competition (D4 L4). They've failed to score in six of these eight games.

o   BATE's two Champions League home games versus Italian clubs have both ended in a draw (2-2 v Juventus in September 2008, 1-1 v AC Milan in November 2011).

o   BATE have lost eight of their last 11 Champions League home games (W2 D1), failing to score in each of those eight defeats.

o   BATE have conceded 10 goals and scored none in their last two home games in the Champions League group stages (7 v Shakhtar Donetsk, 3 v Porto).

o   BATE have never progressed past the Group Stage in four previous attempts.

o   BATE only had two shots and made three touches in the opposition box on the opening matchday of this season's competition, fewer than any other team.

o   Roma have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 17 Champions League away games. Their last shut-out on the road dates back to March 2007 against Lyon (2-0).

o   Roma's last away win in the Champions League was in November 2010 against Basel (3-2). Since then, they have drawn three times and lost twice.

o   Morgan De Sanctis was the oldest player to feature on the opening matchday of this season's Champions League (38 years and 5 months).

Bayern Munich - Dinamo Zagreb

o   Bayern Munich and Dinamo Zagreb's only previous European meeting was in the 1962/63 Fairs Cup quarter-finals. The Croatian side prevailed; winning 4-1 in Munich before playing out a goalless draw in Zagreb.

o   Zagreb's 4-1 win in March 1963 is the most goals Bayern have conceded at home in a European game alongside their 4-0 defeat against Real Madrid in April 2014.

o   Bayern Munich have reached the Champions League final three times in the last six seasons. They have been knocked out at the semi-final stage twice and last 16 once in the other three campaigns.

o   Bayern Munich won all six of their home games in the Champions League last season, scoring 22 goals along the way, more than any other team.

o   Bayern Munich have only failed to score once in their last 33 Champions League group games. It was against Manchester City in December 2011.

o   Bayern Munich have scored 34 goals in their last 11 Champions League games, a rate of over three per game.

o   Dinamo Zagreb's win on the opening matchday against Arsenal ended a run of 15 games without a win for the Croatian side in the Champions League group stages.

o   Dinamo Zagreb have lost their last six away games in the Champions League (2 goals scored, 21 conceded). In fact, Zagreb's only away win in the competition dates back to November 1998 against Ajax (1-0).

o   Zagreb have failed to score in nine of their 12 Champions League away games.

o   Thomas Müller has scored five goals and delivered two assists in his last four Champions League games at the Allianz Arena. He has netted 22 goals in the competition since 2012/13 - only Cristiano Ronaldo (42) and Lionel Messi (26) have done better over this period.

o   Zagreb fielded the two youngest players in this season's Champions League on the opening matchday: Filip Benkovic (18 years and 2 months) and Ante Coric (18 years and 5 months).

 


Arsenal - Olympiakos

o   Arsenal and Olympiakos have been paired in the same Champions League group for the fourth time in the last seven seasons.

o   All six of their previous encounters in the Champions League have ended in a home win.

o   In fact, Olympiakos have lost all 12 of their away games against English teams in European competition, scoring only three goals and conceding 37 in the process.

o   Arsenal have lost five of their last 11 Champions League home games. They had lost only one of their previous 39 games on their own soil.

o   Arsenal have only failed to score three times in their last 29 Champions League games.

o   Arsenal have made it past the group stages in the last 12 seasons but have been knocked out at the last 16 stage in the last five campaigns.

o   Only one of Olympiakos' last 30 Champions League games has ended in a draw (W14 L15). It was against Benfica in October 2013 (1-1).

o   Olympiakos have lost 50 Champions League games - only FC Porto have lost more in the competition (51).

o   Olympiakos have only won five of their 52 Champions League games played away from home (D9 L38). Their last victory on the road dates back to October 2013 against Anderlecht (3-0).

o   Olympiakos had more headed shots on target than any other team on the opening matchday (3).

o   Theo Walcott has failed to score in his last eight Champions League games at the Emirates, his last goal dating back to December 2010 against Partizan Belgrade.

 

 

Maccabi Tel Aviv - Dinamo Kiev

o   Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dinamo Kiev's only previous meeting was in the group stages of the 2011/12 Europa League. Both games ended in a draw, with a total of eight goals scored.

o   Maccabi Tel Aviv's home record in the Champions League group stages is perfectly balanced: one win, one draw, one loss, three goals scored, three conceded.

o   Dinamo Kiev have won only two of their last 31 Champions League games away from home (D7 L22) - it was against Roma in September 2004 (3-0 win awarded because of crowd trouble) and against Porto in October 2008 (1-0).

o   Maccabi Tel Aviv have only won one of their seven games in the Champions League (2-1 v Ajax at home in 2004/05), drawing one and losing five.

o   Maccabi Tel Aviv have never kept a clean sheet in the Champions League group stages (7 games).

o   No Israeli club has ever made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League. They've won only four of their 25 games in the group stages of the competition, all four of these wins coming at home.

o   Dinamo Kiev have not made it past the group stages in any of their last 11 Champions League participations.

o   Dinamo Kiev have won only four of their last 32 Champions League games (D9 L19).

 

 

Porto - Chelsea

o   Chelsea have won four of their six Champions League meetings with Porto (D1 L1). They have never failed to score against the Portuguese side.

o   Porto and Chelsea's three encounters at the Dragao have a perfectly balanced record: one win each, one draw and three goals each.

o   Porto have conceded more than one goal only twice in their last 34 home Champions League games. Moreover, no English club has ever scored more than one goal in 10 away Champions League games against Porto.

o   Porto won four of their five home games in the Champions League last season, drawing the other one. They scored 16 goals and conceded only three.

o   Porto have scored in each of their last 11 Champions League games. They've also only lost one of these games: the quarter final second leg against Bayern Munich last season (1-6).

o   Chelsea have won 80% of their Champions League games against Portuguese sides (8 out of 10), their highest ratio versus any nation faced more than 10 times.

o   Chelsea have won their last seven Champions League games against Portuguese clubs. The last time they failed to do so was in February 2007 in an 1-1 draw against Porto at the Dragao.

o   Chelsea had five shots on target against Maccabi Tel Aviv on the opening matchday. They scored with four of them.

o   If Iker Casillas plays, it will be his 152nd Champions League appearance (qualifiers excluded), a new record. He will overtake Xavi in the process (151 games).

o   Porto's Vincent Aboubakar scored a brace from his only two shots of the game on the opening matchday. The Cameroon international has five goals from five games in his Champions League career.

o   If Willian plays for Chelsea, it will be his 50th Champions League game.

Lyon - Valencia

o   Valencia won their two previous games against Lyon, it was in the 2000/01 Champions League group stages (1-0 at the Mestalla, 2-1 at Gerland).

o   Lyon have only lost one of their last eight Champions League home games against Spanish opposition (W4 D3), it was against Real Madrid in November 2011 (0-2).

o   However, Lyon's last three Champions League meetings with a Spanish club, home and away, have all ended in defeats (0 goal scored, 9 conceded).

o   Lyon have lost only five of their last 41 Champions League games at their Stade Gerland (W22 D14).

o   Lyon have kept seven clean sheets in their last 12 Champions League home games.

o   Lyon have reached the knockout stages in each of their last nine Champions League campaigns.

o   Valencia are unbeaten in their four away Champions League games against French opposition, qualifiers excluded (W3 D1). Their last victory on the road in the Champions League was against a French club, a 1-0 win against Lille in December 2012.

o   Qualifiers included, this is actually Valencia's fourth consecutive Champions League away game against French opposition: v Lille in December 2012, Paris SG in March 2013 and Monaco in August 2015.

o   Valencia have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League in six of their previous nine appearances.

o   Valencia have only failed to score once in their last 14 Champions League games (against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December 2011).

o   Both of Alexandre Lacazette's two previous goals in the Champions League have been scored at Gerland (December 2010 v Hapoel Tel Aviv and February 2012 v APOEL Nicosia).

 

 

Zenit St Petersburg - Gent

o   This is the first ever competitive game between Zenit and Gent.

o   Zenit have won all five of their home games against Belgian clubs in European competition (12 goals scored, one conceded).

o   Gent's only previous meeting with a Russian club was back in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup against Dinamo Moscow. They won 2-0 in Belgium before playing out a goalless draw on the road.

o   Zenit have only won one of their last eight Champions League home games (D5 L2) - that was against Benfica in last season's group stages (1-0).

o   Zenit are taking part in their 6th Champions League campaign - they have never gone further than the last 16 (2011/12, 2013/14).

o   Zenit have played 35 games in the Champions League but have never managed to win back-to-back games in the same season.

o   Gent have lost 10 of their last 11 away games in European competition. The only exception was a win against Luxembourg side Differdange (1-0).

o   There were four red cards on the opening matchday of this season's Champions League, two of them for Gent.

o   No Belgian club has ever reached the knockout stages of the Champions League.

o   Hulk scored his second Champions League brace on the opening matchday against Valencia after the one in October 2009 against APOEL Nicosia. 14 of his 15 Champions League goals have been scored with his left foot.

 

 

Astana - Galatasaray

o   This is the first ever competitive game between Astana and Galatasaray. It is also the first ever Champions League group stage game played in Kazakhstan.

o   Astana won all three of their home games in the Champions League qualifiers this season. These three games produced 12 goals (8 goals scored, 4 conceded).

o   This is the second time Galatasaray will face Kazakh opposition. They drew 1-1 away against Tobol Kostanai in the 2009/10 Europa League qualifiers before winning the return game in Istanbul (2-0).

o   This is Galatasaray's 50th Champions League away game. They have lost 34 of the previous 49 (W6 D9), including the last six.

o   Galatasaray have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 20 Champions League games away from home. The last time they did so was 13 years ago, in September 2002 against Lokomotiv Moscow (2-0 win).

o   Galatasaray have lost their last six Champions League games, their longest ever run of defeats in the competition.

o   In fact, the Turkish side are winless in their last nine Champions League games (D2 L7), their last victory dating back to December 2013 against Juventus (1-0).

o   Galatasaray have never scored more than one goal in their last 12 Champions League games.

o   Only three of Galatasaray's 22 shots against Atletico Madrid on the opening matchday found the target.

o   Similarly, Astana had only shot on target on the opening matchday against Benfica from 14 attempts.

 


Atletico Madrid - Benfica

o   This is the first ever competitive game between Atletico Madrid and Benfica.

o   Atletico Madrid have a perfectly balanced record in six Champions League games against Portuguese sides (all coming against Porto): two wins, two draws and two defeats.

o   Atletico Madrid are unbeaten at home in the Champions League under Diego Simeone (W9 D2). They have also only conceded two goals in those 11 games at the Calderon under the Argentinean manager.

o   Atletico Madrid have kept a clean sheet in each of their last seven Champions League home games. An eighth shut-out in a row against Benfica would establish a new CL record at home.

o   Only Real Madrid (20), Barcelona (17) and Bayern Munich (16) have won more Champions League games than Atletico Madrid (15) since the 2013/14 campaign. The Colchoneros have however kept the most clean sheets over that period (14, ahead of Real Madrid's 13).

o   Benfica have won none of their last 15 games in European competition against Spanish sides (D7 L8), their last victory against a team from Spain coming in September 1982 against Real Betis (2-1). That's actually Benfica's only ever away win versus a Spanish side.

o   Benfica have also failed to score in their last five Champions League games against Spanish opposition.

o   Benfica have scored more than two goals only once in their last 31 Champions League games (v Anderlecht in November 2013).

o   Benfica have conceded only one goal in their last five Champions League games

o   Antoine Griezmann scored his first Champions League brace on the opening matchday against Galatasaray. All four of his shots were on target.

o   No player completed more dribbles than Benfica's Nicolas Gaitan on the opening matchday of this season's Champions League (7).

 

 

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Manchester City

o   Borussia Mönchengladbach knocked out Manchester City in their only previous European encounter. It was in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup quarter-finals (1-1 in England, 3-1 in Germany). Gladbach went on to win the trophy later that season.

o   No English club has ever beaten Gladbach in the German team's own stadium (D1 L4). In fact, Gladbach have won their last four home games against English teams in European competition.

o   Gladbach have scored in each of their last 15 home games in European competition. The last time they didn't hit the net was in September 1987 against Espanyol.

o   Borussia Mönchengladbach conceded three penalties and saw their woodwork struck twice on the opening matchday of this season's Champions League (a 3-0 defeat v Sevilla), more than any other team.

o   Manchester City have been drawn with a German side in each of their five Champions League group stage participations (Bayern Munich in 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2014/15; Dortmund in 2012/13, Gladbach in 2015/16).

o   Manchester City have lost three of their four trips to Germany in the Champions League, winning at the Allianz Arena in December 2013 against Bayern Munich (3-2).

o   Only one of City's 14 Champions League games away from home has ended in a draw (2-2 v CSKA Moscow last season).

o   Manchester City have lost seven of their last 11 Champions League games (W2 D2).

o   None of Manchester City's 29 Champions League games have ended goalless. They have only kept four clean sheets in these 29 games. Only Basel have played more games in the competition without ever registering a goalless draw.

o   Sergio Agüero has scored 14 goals in his last 14 starts with Manchester City in the Champions League.

 


Juventus - Sevilla

o   This is the first ever competitive game between Juventus and Sevilla.

o   Only one Spanish side has beaten Juventus in Turin in the Champions League: Deportivo La Coruna in March 2004 (1-0).

o   Home and away though, Juventus have won only one of their last seven Champions League games against Spanish opposition (2-1 v Real Madrid in last season's semi-final first-leg).

o   Juventus are unbeaten in their last nine Champions League games at the Juventus Stadium (W6 D3), the last team to beat them on home soil being Bayern Munich back in April 2013 (0-2).

o   Juventus have lost only one of their last 11 Champions League games (W7 D3) it was the 2015 final against Barcelona.

o   Sevilla are taking part in their 3rd Champions League campaign. They have always gone past the group stages but never past the last 16.

o   Sevilla have won 65% of games in the Champions League (11 out of 17), the best ratio of any team having played at least 10 games in the competition.

o   Sevilla have only failed to score twice in 17 Champions League games (against Arsenal in September 2007 & Unirea Urziceni in November 2009).

o   Sevilla have won 10 of their 13 games in the group stages of the Champions League (D1 L2).

o   Only one of Sevilla's eight Champions League games away from home has ended in a draw (1-1 v CSKA Moscow in February 2010).

o   Sevilla were awarded three penalties on the opening matchday of this season's Champions League (they converted two of them). It was only the third time in the last 10 years that this happened in the competition.

o   Sevilla's Kevin Gameiro made more touches in the opposition box than any other player on the opening matchday (13). Two of those touches were penalties (one scored, one missed).

o   Alvaro Morata has scored in each of his last four Champions League games with Juventus. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (8) and Neymar (7) have more goals than the Spanish striker (6) in the competition in 2015.

 


Shakhtar Donetsk - Paris SG

o   This is the first ever competitive game between Shakhtar and Paris SG.

o   Shakhtar have only lost one of their last eight home games in the Champions League (W2 D5), it was against Athletic Bilbao in November 2014 (0-1).

o   Shakhtar have failed to score in their three Champions League games played in 2015. It's their longest run without a goal in the competition.

o   Shakhtar have won their last five European games against French opposition (11 goals scored, 1 conceded).

o   No French side has ever beaten Shakhtar in Ukraine (D2 L3). The last French team to face the Donetsk side away from home were Toulouse in the Europa League group stages in October 2009. They lost 4-0.

o   Shakhtar have won only four of their last 18 Champions League games (D7 L7).

o   Shakhtar have failed to score in eight of their last 13 Champions League games.

o   Paris SG have won their four Champions League games against Ukrainian clubs (9 goals scored, 2 conceded). All of these were against Dinamo Kiev.

o   Paris SG have been knocked out in the quarter finals in each of the last three seasons. Their best performance to date is a semi-final in 1994/95 when they were eliminated by AC Milan.

o   Paris SG have won only one of their last six Champions League games away from home (D2 L3), it was against APOEL Nicosia last season (1-0).

o   Paris SG have only failed to score twice in their last 29 Champions League games (v Chelsea in April 2014 & Barcelona in April 2015).

o   Paris SG had 10 shots on target against Malmö, the most on the opening matchday. They also completed 93% of passes, a feat matched only by Barcelona (5 times) and Bayern Munich (once) in the last 10 years in the Champions League.

o   Edinson Cavani has scored 16 goals and delivered two assists in 27 Champions League games. However, he hasn't scored away from home since 21 October 2014 in Nicosia.

o   The PSG duo of Thiago Motta and Marco Verratti completed more passes than any other player on the opening matchday this season: 133 and 129 respectively.

o   This will be Mircea Lucescu's 99th Champions League game as manager. Only Alex Ferguson (190), Arsène Wenger (169), Carlo Ancelotti (141) and José Mourinho (128) have more games to their name.

 


Malmö - Real Madrid

 

o   This is the first ever competitive game between Malmö and Real Madrid.

o   Malmö have lost six of their seven Champions League games. The only exception being a 2-0 home win against Olympiakos in last season's group stages.

o   All three of Malmö's Champions League home games have ended 2-0 (once in their favour, twice for the opponent).

o   Malmö's two previous Champions League games against a team from Madrid ended in a 7-0 aggregate defeat, it was against Atletico last season (5-0 loss in Spain, 2-0 defeat in Sweden).

o   Real Madrid are playing in the Champions League for the 19th consecutive season, the longest current run. They have always made it out of the group stages and have won the European Cup/Champions League 10 times, a record.

o   Real Madrid have made it at least to the semi-finals in each of the last five Champions League campaigns.

o   Real Madrid have won more games than any other club in the history of the Champions League (125, since 1992/93).

o   Real Madrid have won 13 of their last 14 Champions League group games (D1).

o   Real Madrid have scored in their last 39 Champions League games in the group stages, the last team to keep a clean sheet against the Merengues being Juventus in November 2008 (0-2).

o   Real Madrid have kept a clean sheet in four of their last five away games in the Champions League.

o   Real Madrid are the sixth club Rafael Benitez has taken charge of in the Champions League, a joint record alongside Carlo Ancelotti.

o   Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 65 goals in 64 Champions League games with Real Madrid. He is currently the top score in the history of the competition (80 goals), three ahead of Lionel Messi (as of the start of MD2).

o   Markus Rosenberg has scored three of Malmö's four goals in the Champions League group stages.

 


Manchester Utd - Wolfsburg

o   Manchester Utd and Wolfsburg's only previous European encounter was in the 2009/10 Champions League group stages. The Red Devils won both games (2-1 at Old Trafford, 3-1 in Germany).

o   Bayern Munich were the last German team to beat Manchester Utd at Old Trafford in the Champions League. It was in April 2001 (1-0). Since then, German opposition have drawn three and lost six of their subsequent nine trips to Manchester Utd's ground.

o   No German team has kept a clean sheet in their last 16 Champions League games against Manchester Utd. The last side to do so were Bayern Munich in March 2002 (0-0 at Old Trafford).

o   Manchester Utd have only lost four of their last 65 Champions League games at Old Trafford (W46 D15).

o   The Red Devils have won 10 of their last 14 Champions League games against German opposition (D1 L3).

o   Manchester Utd have never lost their first two games of a Champions League campaign.

o   Wolfsburg have lost all three of their trips to England in European competition, conceding eight goals in the process.

CSKA Moscow - PSV Eindhoven

o   PSV Eindhoven have won both of their games against CSKA Moscow. It was in the 2007/08 Champions League group stages (2-1 in Holland, 1-0 in Russia).

o   Both of CSKA's home games against Dutch sides in European competition have ended in a 1-0 defeat (v Feyenoord in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup, v PSV in the 2007/08 Champions League).

o   PSV have lost their last four games in European competition against Russian teams without scoring a single goal (twice against Dinamo Moscow and twice against Zenit St Petersburg in last season's Europa League).

o   CSKA are winless in their last five home Champions League games, their longest drought in the competition. Their last victory on their own soil dates back to October 2013 against Viktoria Plzen (3-2).

o   CSKA have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 17 Champions League games. The last time they did was in November 2011 (0-0 v Trabszonspor).

o   PSV have lost seven of their last nine away games in the Champions League (W1 D1), their last victory dating back to November 2007 against...CSKA Moscow (1-0).
