Champions League Opta Facts – Matchday 5 25-26 November 2014

 

CSKA Moscow - Roma

  • Roma can qualify for the round of last 16 by winning at CSKA Moscow and Bayern Munich avoiding defeat.
  • Roma's 5-1 win on Matchday 1 against CSKA was their joint-largest Champions League victory, alongside their 4-0 against Donetsk in September 2006.
  • Roma have won six of their seven encounters with Russian clubs in European competitions, the only exception being their home defeat against CSKA Moscow in the 1991/92 Cup Winners Cup.
  • CSKA Moscow have won only one of their last seven CL home games (D2 L4). The win came against Victoria Plzen (3-2) on Matchday 2 last season.
  • CSKA Moscow have not kept a clean sheet in their last 14 CL games, conceding 34 goals in this period (an average of 2.4 per game).
  • CSKA Moscow have conceded the fewest fouls in the 2014-15 Champions League after four Matchdays (27).
  • Roma have won only one of their last nine European games (D3, L5), beating CSKA Moscow on MD 1 at home (5-1).

Manchester City - Bayern Munich

  • Only two teams with two points or fewer after four Matchdays have ever qualified from a Champions League group. (Porto 2004-05, two points, and Lokomotiv Moscow 2002-03 1st Group Stage, one point).
  • Bayern have already won Group E with two games to spare. Only five teams have ever finished a Group with a maximum 18 points (Milan 1992-93, PSG 1994-95, Barcelona 2002-03 1st Group Stage, Spartak Moscow 1995-96 & Real Madrid 2011-12).
  • City can be eliminated after this game: If CSKA v Roma doesn't end level City will need a win to keep their chances of progress alive.
  • Jerome Boateng's last-minute-goal gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win against Manchester City on MD1. It remains his only goal in 34 CL games for the former Citizen.
  • Man City are winless in their last six games in Europe (D2 L4): their last win coming against Bayern Munich in December 2013. The Citizens have never been winless for more than six consecutive games in European competitions.
  • Bayern Munich became the first German team to secure the 1st place in a CL group after 4 Matchdays.

APOEL Nicosia - Barcelona

  • A battle for Europa League qualification between Ajax and Nicosia on the last Matchday will not happen if Nicosia lose tonight and Ajax win to confirm the latter's third place.
  • PSG will ensure 1st place if Barcelona lose and PSG win.
  • Barcelona are unbeaten against Cypriot sides in European competition, winning three times at home and drawing their two away games. They have scored 12 goals and conceded only one.
  • APOEL have played a Spanish team 13 times in European competition and have never won (D5 L8).
  • Lionel Messi has netted 71 goals in the Champions League, equaling Raul's record in the competition.
  • Messi has scored 12 goals in his last 11 Champions League appearances. Against Ajax he hit his 19th brace in the competition, matching Cristiano Ronaldo's record.
  • Barcelona have only failed to score in one of their last 30 Champions League group stage games (0-0 against Benfica in December 2012).
  • Barcelona have completed 89.7% of their passes this season in the Champions League; the highest percentage of any side.
  • APOEL are winless in six CL games (D1 L5), equaling their competition record.
  • APOEL have won only one of their last five CL home games (D1 L3) and have failed to score in three of these five games.
  • APOEL Nicosia are one of two sides (the other one is Monaco) to have scored just one goal in the Champions League this season; no side have scored fewer.
  • The Cypriot side have the lowest average possession figure in the Champions League so far this season (32.5%).

 

Paris SG - Ajax

  • A battle for Europa League qualification between Ajax and Nicosia on the last Matchday will not happen if Nicosia lose tonight and Ajax win to confirm the latter's third place.

  • Ajax have won only one of their last eight games against French sides in European competition (D4 L3). It was a home game against Auxerre in the 2010/11 Champions League group stages.

  • The Dutch are also winless in nine successive CL away matches (D4 L5).

  • Ajax have managed only two clean sheets in their last 17 Champions League games.
  • Edinson Cavani has scored the last two and three of PSG's six goals in the ongoing competition.

 

Schalke - Chelsea

  • Chelsea will qualify with a win or a draw with two or more goals on each side. A
  • or 1-1 would only be enough if Sporting fail to win against Maribor.
  • Schalke will reach the last 16 with a win in combination with a draw between Sporting and Maribor.
  • Chelsea are unbeaten against Schalke. They've met five times in the Champions League, with the Blues winning three games and drawing two.
  • Schalke have scored only once in their five games against Chelsea. They've conceded nine goals in the process.
  • Schalke have only won one of five home matches against an English team (two draws, two losses) in the CL.
  • Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in nine of their last 15 Champions League games.
  • Schalke (9) have conceded the second most goals among all teams from Europe's top 5 leagues this CL season (Roma 11).
  • Schalke have both scored and conceded in all six of their Champions League games so far in 2014.
  • Only FC Bayern Munich (43) have fired more shots than Chelsea (39) in away matches this CL season.

Sporting Lisbon - Maribor

  • If Sporting lose they cannot qualify for the last 16.
  • To keep their chances of reaching the last 16 alive Maribor must avoid defeat. A draw would not be enough if Schalke win.
  • There have been 37 goals scored in the last eight CL games involving Sporting (4.6 per game).
  • Sporting have conceded 13 goals in their last four CL matches at home (3.3 per game), losing three in that time - they recorded a 4-2 win against Schalke on MD 4.
  • Since winning their first ever Champions League game versus Dinamo Kiev in September 1999, Maribor have lost five and drawn four of their nine CL matches.
  • NK Maribor have scored only five goals in their 10 Champions League games.
  • Maribor have faced the most shots this CL season (91); no other team has faced more than 78 (Roma).

BATE Borisov - Porto

  • To keep their chances of reaching the knock-out stages alive BATE need to win and hope that Donetsk lose.
  • Porto's 6-0 win over Borisov on MD2 was their record victory in the Champions League.
  • Porto have netted 12 goals in their four Champions League games so far this season; eight more than they managed in the whole of their unsuccessful 2013-14 CL group stage (four).
  • Only Donetsk (14) and Dortmund (13) have scored more goals than Porto (12) this Champions League season.
  • BATE Borisov have conceded 19 goals so far in the Champions League in 2014-15; six more than any other side.
  • The record tally for goals conceded in a Champions League group stage is 22 - set by Dinamo Zagreb in 2011-12 and FC Nordsjaelland in 2012-13.
  • Jackson Martínez has scored five goals in his last six Champions League appearances for Porto.

Shakhtar Donetsk- Athletic Club

  • A win or a draw would guarantee Donetsk's progress to the round of last 16. Even a defeat would be enough if BATE fail to win against Porto.
  • Bilbao are at the bottom of group H, two points behind BATE and battling for third place to qualify for the European League.
  • Following their defeat to Porto on the last Matchday, Bilbao have won just one of their 10 Champions League games (W1 D4 L5).
  • The Spanish side have never scored more than once in a CL match (seven goals in 10 CL games overall); they have scored in each of their five away matches.
  • Donetsk's Luiz Adriano is the leading scorer this Champions League season (nine goals). In his last two matches against BATE Adriano netted eight goals.
  • Luiz Adriano has scored more goals than 24 of the 32 CL teams this season.
  • Shakhtar Donetsk have scored the most goals (14) and have the best shot conversion rate in the Champions League this season (34.2%).

  • This will be the 20th occasion that a Spanish side have hosted a Greek side in the Champions League. The Spanish sides haven't lost a single game so far (W15 D4).
  • Olympiakos are winless in nine CL matches in Spain (D2 L7).
  • Koke has four assists in the Champions League this season; more than any other player.
  • Eight of Atletico Madrid's 10 Champions League goals this season have come after half-time (80%).
  • A. Madrid have kept a clean sheet in six of their last seven CL matches at home, including the last four in a row.

Ludogorets Razgrad - Liverpool

  • To keep their chances of reaching the knock-out stages alive Razgrad need to win and hope that Basel fail to win.
  • Liverpool will be eliminated after this round if Basel pick up more points on Matchday 5 than the Reds.
  • Liverpool have failed to score in their last three Champions League games, their longest such run in this competition since 2005 - 2006 (five games in a row between November 2005 and September 2006).
  • Liverpool have failed to score in both away games in their Champions League campaign this season and have recorded just two goals in their last five Champions League away games.
  • Razgrad are yet to score more than one goal in a Champions League game, but have found the back of the net at least once in three of their four games in the competition.
  • Razgrad have celebrated their only Champions League win on home soil, beating Basel 1-0 at home on Matchday 3.
  • Ludogorets have received the joint-most bookings in the competition this season (13, as many as Monaco and Ajax).
  • Two of Razgrad's three goals in the Champions League have come in second half injury time, one of them in the first meeting at Anfield.

 

 

Basel - Real Madrid

  • Basel will progress to the last 16 with a win if Razgrad don't lose against Liverpool.
  • Real Madrid are playing in the Champions League for the 18th consecutive season, the longest current run. They have always made it out of the Champions League group stages; this season they're qualified for the round of last 16 after four Matchdays (W4).
  • Real Madrid and Basel's only previous encounter before this season was in the first round of the 1971/72 UEFA Cup. The Spanish side won both games by a 2-1 scoreline.
  • Real Madrid have won all of their five matches against Swiss sides in the Champions League.
  • FC Basel have won just two of their 15 games against Spanish sides in European competitions.
  • For the first time in the club's history FC Basel have managed to gain six points from their first four games in the group stages of the Champions League.
  • FC Basel have managed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last six home games in European competitions to set a new club record.
  • Basel became the first Swiss team to score four goals in a single Champions League game on Matchday 4 (4-0 vs. Razgrad).
  • Real Madrid have won their last seven games in the Champions League.
  • Real Madrid have failed to score only once in their last 42 games in the Champions League (0-2 in Dortmund in the quarter-finals 2013/14).
  • Karim Benzema is the only player to have scored at least one goal on each of the four Matchdays this season (five goals in total).
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 70 goals in the Champions League, only one goal fewer than the record holders in this competition, Lionel Messi and Raul (71).

 

Bayer Leverkusen - Monaco

  • A win or a draw would guarantee Leverkusen's progress to the last 16. Even a defeat will be enough for Leverkusen if Zenit avoid defeat against Benfica.
  • Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen's only previous encounter before this season was in the group stages of the 1997/98 Champions League. The French side won 4-0 at home and drew 2-2 in Germany.
  • Bayer 04 Leverkusen have lost five of their seven CL matches against French sides (one win, one draw). At home they are still waiting for their first win (D1, L2).
  • AS Monaco lost their first game in European competitions on German soil (0-3 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt in 1974) - since then they have managed two wins and two draws in Germany.
  • Leverkusen have reached the round of last 16 in their last three CL seasons but have failed to reach the quarter-finals in each one of these.
  • Bayer 04 Leverkusen have faced only 25 shots, the fewest of all teams this season.
  • AS Monaco have conceded only one goal this CL season, the fewest alongside Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
  • AS Monaco are without a goal in 299 minutes in the Champions League. Joao Moutinho scored the last goal on Matchday 1 against today's opponent Bayer Leverkusen.

  • Benfica will be eliminated with a defeat. Even a draw would not be enough if Leverkusen lose against Monaco.
  • Zenit have failed to win in their last six home games in the Champions League (five draws, one loss).
  • Benfica have only achieved one win in their last 11 away games in the Champions League (four draws, six losses).
  • At home, Zenit are unbeaten against teams from Portugal (four wins, two draws).
  • Benfica have lost their last three away games hosted by a Russian team.
  • Three former Benfica players - Axel Witsel, Ezequiel Garay and Javi Garcia - now play for Zenit St. Petersburg.
  • After going two full seasons without a red card in the Champions League (2012-13 and 2013-14), Benfica have received two in their four games so far this season in the competition.

 

Anderlecht - Galatasaray

  • A win is the only result that will keep either of these teams in the competition, but even that might not be enough as they will be both eliminated if Arsenal avoid defeat at home against Dortmund.
  • Anderlecht defender Anthony Vanden Borre scored two goals in the last match against Arsenal, helping his team to a 3-3-draw in a game they trailed by three goals.
  • Only three other teams have managed not to lose after being three goals down in a match of the Champions League (Liverpool FC, SV Werder Bremen and Deportivo La Coruna).
  • Anderlecht have failed to win in their last 12 matches in the Champions League (eight losses, four draws).
  • Anderlecht have lost their last six matches at home in a row - three times without scoring a goal.
  • Galatasaray have failed to win in their last seven away games in the Champions League (six losses, one draw) - they've lost the last five in a row.
  • The next goal for the Istanbul outfit will be their 100th in the Champions League; they currently have 99 in 96 matches.
  • Galatasaray have failed to win against a team from Belgium in all of their five matches (two draws, three losses).

 

Arsenal - Borussia Dortmund

  • These teams are battling for 1st place; if Dortmund avoid defeat they are guaranteed top spot.
  • A draw or a win guarantees Arsenal's progress to the round of last 16. Even a defeat would be enough if the other game ends as a draw.
  • For the third time in a row Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the round of the last 16 in the Champions League.
  • Dortmund, with 12 points and a goal difference of +12, have the second best record ever after four Matchdays in the group stages of the Champion League - only Juventus, in 1995/96, had a better record (only courtesy of scoring one goal more).
  • Dortmund have won their last five matches in the Champions League - only from December 1996 to October 1997 have they had a longer run (eight wins)
  • Only Galatasaray have managed to score against Dortmund in their last five matches.
  • For the first time, Dortmund have scored at least twice in five consecutive games in the Champions League.
  • With 13 goals scored in this year's group stage, Dortmund have the second-best goal-tally after Shaktar Donezk (14 goals).
  • Adrian Ramos scored with each of his three shots on target in the Champions League.
  • Alexis Sanchez has scored two goals in this year's CL-season, equaling his personal record of goals in a single season (2011/12 with FC Barcelona).
