Champions League Opta Facts – Matchday 6 9-10 December 2014

Olympiakos - Malmö

  • Olympiakos will reach the last 16 with a win if Atletico beat Juventus.
  • If Malmö win, they would qualify for the Europa League.
  • Malmö's only win in the Champions League/European Cup since September 1990 (excluding qualifiers) was 2-0 against Olympiakos in Sweden earlier this season.
  • In fact, those two goals account for 100% of the Swedish side's goals in Champions League history, both of them scored by Markus Rosenberg.
  • That game was also the only encounter between Malmö and a Greek side so far in European competition.
  • Malmö score just 4.4% of their shots, a lower percentage than any other CL side this season.
  • Olympiakos have lost two of their three games against Swedish sides in European competition, but both of them were played in Sweden.
  • Swedish sides have not lost any of their last six European games against Greek clubs (W2 D4), but they have never won in Greece (D2 L3).
  • Kostas Mitroglou has scored more goals than any other Olympiakos player in Champions League history (10), and he is also the top Greek scorer in the competition.
  • Michel has won six Champions League games as a manager, the same as he has lost so far in the competition (D1).

Juventus - Atletico Madrid

  • Atletico Madrid have qualified from the group stage in four out of their five Champions League seasons so far, including this campaign.
  • They will ensure 1st place for the third time (after 1996/97 and 2013/14) if they do not lose by two or more goals.
  • A draw in this game would be enough for Juventus to reach the last 16 or even a defeat if Olympiakos do not beat Malmö.
  • Atlético have scored four headed goals in the Champions League group stage this season, more than any other side. Juventus have conceded a joint-high 50% of their goals from headers.
  • Juventus are the only CL side to have scored more than one direct free-kick goal this season (2).
  • Atletico have kept a joint-high four clean sheets in the Champions League this season (alongside Monaco).
  • Koke has four assists in the Champions League this season; more than any other player.
  • Juventus have won all of their three European competition games against Atletico Madrid at home, all of them in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
  • Atletico have scored more than one goal just twice in their 12 European games in Italy, against Roma in 1999 and Lazio in 2012 (both of them in the UEFA Cup/Europa League).
  • Juventus (89) and Atletico (83) have won more fouls in the Champions League this season than any other team.

Liverpool - FC Basel

  • If Liverpool do not win, they will not qualify for the last 16.
  • The Reds would at least qualify for the Europa League by matching Ludogorets' result in their last game of the group stage. It would be their second Champions League in a row with them finishing third in their group, after 2009/2010.
  • FC Basel could be through even with a draw. It would be their third time in the CL round of 16, after 2011/2012 (when they were eventually beaten by Bayern) and 2002/2003 (when they finished third in the second group stage).
  • Liverpool have made fewer substitutions than any other Champions League side this season (11).
  • Liverpool have never defeated FC Basel in European Competition (D2 L1). Their only defeat against the Swiss side was earlier this season (0-1).
  • The Reds have won six out of their 11 games against Swiss opposition (D3 L2) however and they have never been defeated by a Swiss side at Anfield (W3 D2).
  • Liverpool have gone six CL games without keeping a clean sheet, their longest such run since November 2008, when they conceded in eight successive games (their worst run in the competition).
  • All four Liverpool goals in the Champions League this season have come in their two games against Ludogorets Razgrad.
  • FC Basel have not scored after the 65th minute of their CL games this season and Liverpool have scored two of their four goals in the last ten minutes of their games.
  • Mario Balotelli has never scored more than two goals in a Champions League season. He has already scored one this term.

Real Madrid - Ludogorets Razgrad

  • The Whites are also already group winners, something they have achieved in five out of the last six seasons.
  • Ludogorets are one of the 10 sides unable to reach the round of last 16 at this point, but they can qualify for the Europa League by beating Real Madrid or with a draw if Basel win their game.

  • Karim Benzema has the joint-highest shooting accuracy among players with more than five attempts at target (87.5%, alongside Gervinho).
  • Only Lionel Messi (74) has scored more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo (71) in Champions League history.

  • Roma would qualify for the Champions League last 16 for the first time in four seasons with a win. Even a draw would be enough if CSKA also draw with Bayern Munich. A goalless draw would be enough if CSKA don't win against Bayern.
  • In the only group with all its members able to qualify for the last 16, City's fate depends on the CSKA result.
  • If Manuel Pellegrini's side lose against Roma, both City and CSKA will be out of the Champions League this season.
