Euro 2012: Welbeck to deputise for Rooney
Roy Hodgson has announced his England squad for the Euros and with John Terry included and Rio Ferdinand absent, William Hill are opening betting on which centre backs will start the first match against France. Hills make Chelsea teammates John Terry and Gary Cahill the odds on shots to start the first match of the tournament with Terry 1/4 and Cahill 1/2. Phil Jones is 7/4 and Lescott 2/1.
"France are undoubtedly going to try and attack England from the off, but John Terry and Gary Cahill have formed quite the partnership recently and their knowledge of each other may just swing the balance in their favours ahead of Lescott and Jones," said Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly.
At the other end of the pitch, Wayne Rooney is suspended for the first match of the tournament and William Hill make Danny Welbeck the 2/5 favourite to deputise for his Manchester United teammate. Andy Carroll is 6/4 and Jermain Defoe 2/1.
"There will be three names trying to impress for those first two games given the absence of Wayne Rooney, but our odds suggest that it will be Welbeck in pole position," said Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly.
Danny Welbeck, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney are all 6/1 to be England's leading scorers with Andy Carroll 7/1.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the sole uncapped outfield player called up by Hodgson and William Hill make him 5/1 to start the first match of the tournament (1/9 he does not).
