Europa League Final Opta Facts - Sevilla v Benfica

Sevilla v Benfica

  • Benfica have lost their last seven major European finals; they have not won a European trophy since the 1961/62 European Cup.
  • Despite that, the Portuguese side's two previous European final victories have come in their only two previous finals against Spanish opposition (1961 and 1962 European Cups, v Barcelona and Real Madrid).
  • Since beating Real Madrid 5-3 in 1962, Benfica have only scored four goals in eight European finals.
  • Sevilla have won both previous European finals they have reached, beating Middlesbrough in the 2006 UEFA Cup and fellow Spaniards Espanyol in the same competition a year later.
  • Since the UEFA Cup became the Europa League, eight of the 10 teams to reach the final have come from the Iberian Peninsula (four from Spain, four from Portugal, two from England).
  • Sevilla only finished ninth in La Liga last season, but qualified for Europe after Malaga and Rayo Vallecano were disqualified for financial reasons.
  • The only previous European meeting between Sevilla and Benfica came in the preliminary round of the 1957/58 European Cup; Sevilla won 3-1 on aggregate.
  • Unai Emery's side have won seven and lost just two of their last 10 European games against sides from Portugal (D1).
  • The Eagles are without a win in 14 European games against Spanish opponents (D6 L8).
  • Indeed Benfica's heaviest ever European defeat came against a side from Spain; they lost 7-0 to Celta Vigo in the 1999/00 UEFA Cup last 32.
  • 11 of Benfica's 22 European goals this season (CL and EL) have come from set pieces; the most of any side in the two competitions this season.
  • Carlos Bacca has scored in three of his last five European appearances for Sevilla.
  • Luisao (5) has either scored (three) or assisted (two) more goals than any other defender in Europe this season (excluding qualifiers).
  • Benfica have won eight and lost none of their last 10 European games (D2) and have only conceded four goals in eight Europa League games this term.
  • Jorge Jesus's side have the best shot conversion rate in the Europa League this season (22%).
  • Only Red Bull Salzburg's Kevin Kampl (32) has created more chances in the 2013/14 Europa League than Ivan Rakitic (28).
