Europa League Opta Facts – February 21st


Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle United

  • Metalist have only lost one of their last nine European home games (W6 D2), winning their last three in a row.
  • The Ukrainian side have conceded exactly once in seven of their last nine European games at the Metalist Oblast Sports Complex, keeping a clean sheet in the other two games.
  • Everton are the only previous English side to face Kharkiv away from home, beating them 3-2 in the Uefa Cup in October 2007.
  • Metalist have never beaten an English side in European football, drawing twice in England (including the first leg of this tie) and suffering the above defeat to Everton on home soil.
  • Newcastle are winless in four European away games, drawing two and losing two.
  • The Magpies have never won in Ukraine; their previous two games (both against Dynamo Kiev) have ended in a draw and a defeat.

  • The Lilywhites have, however, never won away at a French side (1D 1L).
  • Lyon have won their last four European home games; they have not won five in a row (excluding qualifiers) since September 2000.
  • The French giants have drawn five of their last six home meetings with English sides, losing the other to Arsenal in 2001.
  • Spurs have won 12 and lost just two of their last 19 games in all competitions.
  • Lyon, who lost their last home game 1-3 against Lille, have not lost consecutive games at the Stade Gerland since November 2011.

Chelsea v Sparta Prague

  • Sparta Prague are without a win in eleven European games against English sides (excluding qualifiers, drawing three, losing eight and scoring a total of just three goals.
  • Sparta have only won one of eight previous trips to England in Europe (D1 L6), winning 3-2 against Watford in November 1983.
  • That victory at Vicarage Road is the only win ever recorded by a Czech side in England, with 19 of the other 22 meetings ending in home wins (three draws).
  • Sparta are the only Czech side to ever keep a clean sheet on English soil, drawing 0-0 with opponents in this game Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in November 2003.

Liverpool v Zenit St Petersburg

  • Liverpool have only once overturned a two goal deficit to qualify from a European knockout stage (v Auxerre in the 1991/92 Uefa Cup).
  • The Reds have only lost one of their last 12 home European games, winning eight and drawing three.
  • Liverpool lost their first home meeting to a Russian side back in 1992 (0-2 v Spartak Moscow) but have since remained unbeaten in three (W2 D1), keeping three clean sheets in the process.
  • Brendan Rodgers' side have lost their last two against Russian clubs without scoring a goal, however, including the first leg of this tie.
  • Zenit have lost both previous European away games in England by a score of 0-1, including on their one trip to the city of Liverpool (to face Everton) in December 2007.
