Anzhi Makhachkala v Newcastle United

  • This will be Newcastle United's first ever European game against a Russian opponent.
  • The Magpies have only won one of their last five European games on the road (excluding qualifiers), though that victory did come against Metalist Kharkiv in the last round.
  • Overall, Newcastle have lost only four of 42 European games since September 2003 (W29, D9), though all four of these defeats came on the road.
  • Anzhi's previous two European games against English side (v Liverpool in the group stages this season) both ended in 1-0 home wins.
  • The Russian side have won all four previous home games in Europe (excluding qualifiers), scoring eight goals and conceding just once.
  • The last three occasions an English side has played a European game in Russia (Liverpool and Spurs twice), the visitors have lost and failed to score each time.
  • Anzhi are unbeaten in 18 consecutive home games in all competitions, winning 16 and drawing two.
  • Lacina Traoré has scored twice and been sent off once in Anzhi's last five Europa League games combined.
  • The Magpies have allowed more shots from open play (78) than any other team in the Europa League this term.
  • Anzhi players have been booked five times for timewasting in this competition already in 2012/13; a competition-high.

Steaua Bucharest v Chelsea

  • Steaua are without a win in five games against English sides in Europe, drawing one and losing four.
  • On home soil, however, Steaua have only lost one of their seven clashes with sides from England (excluding qualifiers), losing to Arsenal on home soil in October 2007.
  • Teams from England have scored a total of just four goals in seven away games at Steaua and never more than once in a single game.
  • Chelsea have only once before faced a Romanian side in Europe; in the 2008/09 Champions League group stages, they drew 0-0 away at CFR Cluj before beating them 2-1 at home.
  • The Blues have only failed to score in one of their last 22 European games, scoring 44 in total in the other 21 fixtures in this run.
  • Steaua have won six and lost just two of their last 12 home games in Europe (D4).
  • The Romanian giants have scored 11 goals in the Europa League already this season, but none have been headers.
  • Ciprian Tatarusanu has dropped four crosses in the Europa League this season, no ‘keeper has dropped more.
  • Chelsea have lost only two of their last 12 away games in all competitions (W7 D3), but these have come in their last four on the road (W2 L2).
  • Across Europe's two main competitions this season, Chelsea are the joint-top scorers (18, alongside Bayern Munich).

Tottenham Hotspur v Inter Milan

  • Inter Milan have scored more goals from open play (16) and more goals from fast breaks (four) than any other team in the Europa League this season.
  • Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick against Inter Milan at the San Siro in the 2010/11 Champions League.
  • Spurs scored exactly three times in both clashes with Inter in that competition, their only two meetings with the Milan giants to date, but only won one (1L).
  • Tottenham's last three clashes with Italian sides in Europe have all ended 0-0, with Spurs keeping a clean sheet in each of their last four.
  • No Italian side has ever won at White Hart Lane in Europe (excluding qualifiers), with Milan and Inter suffering defeats, followed by Milan losing again and Lazio drawing 0-0.
  • Only one of Inter's 16 previous away games in England in Europe has ended in a draw (0-0 at Everton back in September 1963).
  • Inter have won six and lost just one of their last nine games in Europe (2D).
  • Fredy Guarín has assisted more goals (five) than any other player in this competition this season.
