FA Cup Opta Facts – Round 1

 

Salford City v Notts County

  • This is the first time Salford City have reached the first round of the competition.
  • The Magpies have been eliminated in each of the last three seasons by sides lower down the pyramid than them, though all three were playing in the fourth tier.
  • Notts County were last eliminated by a non-league side in the FA Cup in 2008/09, losing in a second round replay to Kettering Town.

 

Accrington Stanley v York City

  • This will be the first time Accrington Stanley and York City will have played each other in the FA Cup.
  • Accrington are winless in their last six meetings with the Minstermen (D4 L2).
  • In the last meeting between the two sides in March, Josh Windass scored a 90th minute equaliser to salvage a point for Stanley.

 

AFC Wimbledon v Forest Green Rovers

  • This is the first game between the two sides since 2010/11, where they shared two draws.
  • The Dons have progressed from the first round in four of the last five seasons.
  • Forest Green Rovers have been eliminated at this stage in each of the last three times they've qualified for the tournament proper (2010/11, 2012/13 and 2014/15).


Aldershot Town v Bradford City

  • The Shots knocked out Portsmouth in the first round last season, but needed a replay to do it.
  • Bradford have lost four of their last five visits to Aldershot, though did win there in their most recent trip in November 2012.
  • The Bantams went all the way to the sixth round last season, knocking out Chelsea and Sunderland. It was their best performance in the competition since 1976.

 

Altrincham v Barnsley

  • Altrincham made it to the first round last season, but were beaten by fellow non-leaguers Blyth Spartans 4-1.
  • The Tykes have won three of their last four FA Cup matches away from home, including a 3-0 win over Chester FC last season.
  • Alty haven't beaten a Football League side in this competition since defeating Wigan in December 1994 in Round 2.

 

Barnet v Blackpool

  • Barnet have been eliminated in four of the last five seasons at this stage.
  • This is the first time since 2006 that Blackpool have started the competition in Round 1.
  • The last time the Bees hosted Blackpool in November 2000, they won 7-0 - their biggest ever Football League win.

 

Barwell v Welling United

  • This is Barwell's first appearance in the FA Cup proper.
  • Welling United have been beaten in seven of their last eight appearances in the first round, but they did knock out Luton in a replay in 2013.
  • The Wings have gone 10 games in the FA Cup without keeping a clean sheet, last shutting out Reading in 1989.

 

Brackley Town v Newport County

  • Brackley reached the second round in 2013/14, beating Gillingham in a replay. This is their best performance in the tournament.
  • Newport haven't kept a clean sheet in six away FA Cup ties.
  • The Exiles have been eliminated from just two of their last eight ties against non-league sides.

 

Braintree Town v Oxford United

  • This is Braintree's fifth appearance in Round 1 - they've never made it further than this stage. They were thrashed 6-0 by Chesterfield at this stage last season.
  • Oxford United have won their last three FA Cup ties against non-league sides.
  • In their previous five FA Cup matches (including replays), the Iron have scored just twice.

 

Bristol Rovers v Chesham United

  • Bristol Rovers have won four of their last five FA Cup ties against non-league sides.
  • The Generals are playing their first FA Cup 1st round tie since November 1994. Only once have they made it past this stage - making the third round in 1980.
  • Chesham striker Barry Hayles played for Bristol Rovers in 1997/98, top scoring that season with 25 goals in all competitions.

 

Burton Albion v Peterborough United

  • Burton met Peterborough in Round 1 in 2005/06, winning 1-0 at home in a replay after a 0-0 draw at London Road.
  • Albion were eliminated in Round 1 last season, losing 5-0 away at Barnsley. They haven't lost a home tie since they were promoted to the Football League in 2009 (W6 D1).
  • The last team to eliminate Posh in Round 1 was Burton in 2005; they've reached Round 2 in each of their last six attempts.

 

Bury v Wigan Athletic

  • Bury have knocked Wigan out twice in the FA Cup (Round 1 in 1978/79 and Round 2 in 1992/93), winning a replay at Gigg Lane on both occasions after draws at Wigan.
  • Bury are two-time winners of the FA Cup (1900 and 1903), though they've lost in Round 1 in four of the last seven seasons.
  • Wigan, winners in 2013 and semi-finalists in 2014, are featuring in Round 1 for the first time since 2002/03. Their only Round 1 elimination in the last six attempts came at the hands of Canvey Island in 2001/02.

 

Cambridge v Basingstoke Town

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between the two sides.
  • The U's have been eliminated on three of the last four occasions they've faced non-league opponents.
  • This is only the eighth time Basingstoke have reached Round 1 of the FA Cup - they have twice eliminated league clubs (Wycombe in 1997/98 and Chesterfield in 2006/07).

 

Coventry City v Northampton Town

  • This is the fourth FA Cup meeting between Coventry and Northampton, with the Sky Blues winning two but losing the most recent one 1-0 in 1989/90.
  • Coventry, winners in 1987, have won six of their last seven Round 1 ties (stretching back to 1960/61), though the defeat was last season's 2-1 home loss to Worcester City.
  • The Cobblers have lost three of their last four Round 1 ties.

 

Crawley Town v Luton Town

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between Crawley and Luton, though they have met twice previously (excluding Conference), with Crawley winning both games (one in the FL Trophy, one in League Two).
  • The Red Devils have won four of their last five Round 1 ties, with their only loss coming against Yeovil in last season's competition.
  • 1959 finalists Luton have won 10 of their last 11 Round 1 ties, losing only to Welling United in 2013/14.

 

Crewe Alexandra v Eastleigh

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between the two sides.
  • Crewe have lost three of their last four FA Cup meetings against non-league opposition, though only one (Telford in 2003/04) was at Gresty Road.
  • This is only Eastleigh's third ever appearance in Round 1 of the FA Cup, losing one but winning the other against Lincoln last season before bowing out in Round 2 with defeat to Southport.

 

Dagenham and Redbridge v Morecambe

  • This is the first time the two sides have met in the FA Cup, although they have played 16 times in League Two since 2007/08 (inc play-offs).
  • The Daggers have drawn their last five FA Cup home ties, last losing a home FA Cup game in January 2002 to Ipswich.
  • Since they gained promotion to the Football League in 2007, Morecambe have been eliminated in Round 1 in six of eight attempts.

 

Doncaster Rovers v Stalybridge

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between the two sides.
  • Donny have lost just one of their last nine Round 1 games against non-league opposition, losing to Scarborough Town in 2003/04.
  • Celtic are making their first Round 1 appearance since 2003/04, when they lost to Barnet. They've only made it past this stage three times, in 1935/36 and 1993/94 1999/00.

 

Dover Athletic v Stourbridge

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between the two sides.
  • Dover have won their previous three Round 1 ties, not losing a Round 1 tie since 2002/03 against Oxford.
  • Stourbridge have won two of their previous three Round 1 ties, knocking out Plymouth on a replay in 2011/12 and Biggleswade Town in 2013/14.

 

Gainsborough Trinity v Shrewsbury Town

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between the two sides.
  • Gainsborough haven't won an FA Cup match since 1952 when they knocked out Netherfield (now Kendal Town).
  • The Shrews have been eliminated four of the last six times they faced non-league opposition in the FA Cup, all in Round 1.

 

Grimsby Town v St Albans City

  • This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides.
  • The Mariners fell at this stage in last season's competition, losing 3-1 at home to Oxford.
  • St Albans City have fallen at this hurdle the last three times they've reached it (1999/00, 2002/03 and 2013/14), conceding 14 goals in the process. The last time they reached Round 2 was in 1996/97.

 

Halifax Town v Wycombe Wanderers

  • This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides. Wycombe have won three of their last four cup ties against non-league opposition, losing the other.
  • This is the first time Halifax have reached the First Round since 2007/08, when they lost 4-0 at home to Burton.
  • The Chairboys have made it past the First Round in the last two seasons, though have fallen in Round 2 both times.

 

Hartlepool United v Cheltenham Town

  • Pools have won just three of their 16 previous meetings with Cheltenham (all league, including play-offs), drawing five and losing eight.
  • Hartlepool have made it past the First Round in the past two seasons, though haven't made it to Round 3 since 2011.
  • The Robins have won four of their last five First Round fixtures, losing to Tamworth in 2013/14.

 

Leyton Orient v Staines Town

  • This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides. The O's have won their last five cup games against non-league opposition, scoring 22 goals in the process.
  • Orient have only failed to progress past the First Round in one of the past five seasons, though it was in the previous campaign.
  • Staines Town lost 5-0 at Brentford the last time they made the First Round, in the 2013/14 campaign.

 

Maidstone United v Yeovil Town

  • These sides have met once before, at this exact stage of the FA Cup in 1989 - Maidstone triumphed 2-1 at home.
  • Maidstone eliminated a fourth-tier side at this stage last season, beating Stevenage 2-1 in a replay before being knocked out by Wrexham in Round 2.
  • Yeovil have been eliminated four of the last five times they've faced non-league opposition in the FA Cup.

 

Mansfield Town v Oldham Athletic

  • This is the sixth time these sides have been drawn against each other in the FA Cup, with Mansfield winning just once (D2 L4). Oldham progressed the last time they met in 2013/14.
  • The Stags have won just one of their last nine home FA Cup games (D2 L6).
  • Oldham have progressed past the First Round in each of the past four seasons, last losing at this stage to Accrington Stanley in 2010/11.

 

Millwall v AFC Fylde

  • This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides. Millwall are unbeaten in their last eight against non-league sides (W7 D1), since an FA Cup first round replay defeat to Woking in 1996.
  • The Lions have lost only one of their last seven home FA Cup fixtures (W3 D3).
  • This will be AFC Fylde's third appearance in the First Round of the FA Cup. They've lost the previous two to Accrington Stanley in 2012/13 and Plymouth last season.

 

Northwich Victoria v Boreham Wood

  • This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides.
  • The Vics are making their first First Round appearance since 2007/08, when they lost 3-1 to Oxford.
  • Boreham Wood last got past this stage in 1997/98 beating Hayes 1-0. Since then they've drawn two and lost six of their FA Cup games (excluding qualifiers).

 

Plymouth Argyle v Carlisle United

  • Plymouth have lost just one of their last 10 meetings with Carlisle (all league), winning six.
  • The Pilgrims have scored at least twice in each of their last five FA Cup home games (W3 D1 L1), netting 15 goals in total.
  • Carlisle fell at this stage last season, the first time they had lost a First Round tie since 2007/08.

 

Port Vale v Maidenhead United

  • This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides. Vale have won their last three meetings with non-league opposition.
  • Port Vale's last four home FA Cup games have produced 20 goals.
  • Maidenhead United will play in their eighth FA Cup First Round, and first since 2011/12. They've never made it to Round 2.

 

Portsmouth v Macclesfield Town

  • Pompey and Macclesfield have never met in the FA Cup.
  • Since winning the semi-final against Spurs in April 2010, Pompey haven't won a single FA Cup match (D1 L6).
  • The Silkmen have progressed in each of the last four Round 1 ties they have played, keeping a clean sheet in their last three.

 

Rochdale v Swindon Town

  • This is the first FA Cup meeting between the two sides since January 1913, when Swindon won 2-0 at Spotland.
  • Rochdale have gone nine FA Cup Round 1 games without a clean sheet (W4 D1 L4).
  • The Robins have conceded 13 goals without reply in their last four FA Cup ties, last scoring in a 2-1 win over Wigan in Round 3 in January 2012.

 

Scunthorpe United v Southend United

  • This is the first ever FA Cup meeting between the two sides, though Southend won 2-1 in the most recent league clash in September 2015.
  • The Iron have been eliminated in three of the last four seasons in Round 1.
  • Southend have won their last two FA Cup away ties, scoring three goals in each game.

 

Sheffield United v Worcester City

  • These two sides have met once before in the FA Cup, a Round 4 tie in 1958/59 which the Blades won 2-0.
  • Sheffield United, who reached the semi-finals in 2013/14, have progressed from their last seven Round 1 ties, stretching back to 1982/83.
  • It's only the third time in 10 years that Worcester have reached Round 1, but they won both their other ties (Chippenham in 2005/06 and Coventry in 2014/15).

 

Stevenage v Gillingham

  • Stevenage and Gillingham have never met in the FA Cup, and have only played one another on five previous occasions - all in the past five years.
  • Stevenage have progressed to at least Round 4 in three of the past five seasons, though they were knocked out by non-league Maidstone last season in Round 1.
  • The Gills have gone out in Round 1 in each of the past two campaigns.

 

Walsall v Fleetwood Town

  • Walsall won both meetings with Fleetwood Town last season by a 1-0 scoreline.
  • The two sides met in Round 1 in 2010/11 - then non-league Fleetwood took the Saddlers to a replay but lost 2-0 away.
  • The Cod Army have progressed from Round 1 in three of the last four season, but fell at this stage to Cambridge United last season.

 

Wealdstone v Colchester United

  • This is Wealdstone's first appearance in the FA Cup proper since 2009/10, where they were beaten by Rotherham United in Round 1.
  • Colchester have played Wealdstone in the FA Cup once before, defeating them 4-0 in the second round in December 1983.
  • The Stones have kept only one clean sheet in their last 14 FA Cup games.

 

Whitehawk v Lincoln City

  • This will be Whitehawk's first appearance in the FA Cup 1st round.
  • The Imps have exited the FA Cup in two of the last three seasons to non-league sides (Mansfield in 2012/13 and Eastleigh in 2014/15).
  • Lincoln have shipped two or more goals in each of their last six away games in the FA Cup proper.

 

Didcot Town v Exeter City

  • Didcot are one of two eighth-tier sides (Northwich Victoria) to have made it to the first round proper in the FA Cup this season.  This is their first appearance in Round 1.
  • Exeter have fallen in Round 1 in each of the last five seasons, failing to score in the last three. They lost to eighth-tier side Warrington Town last season.
  • Nine of the Grecians' last 10 FA Cup games have been away from home. Of those nine, they have won one (L8).

 

FC United of Manchester v Chesterfield

  • FC United have qualified for the FA Cup just once before, beating Rochdale in the first round in 2010/11 before succumbing to Brighton after a replay.
  • Chesterfield made it the fourth round last season, their best showing in the FA Cup since making the semi-finals in 1996/97.
  • The Spireites have progressed in each of their last five ties against non-league opposition (lost to Droylsden in Round 2 in 2009, but they were expelled from the competition).
