Genuine Contenders Or Rich Pretenders?
Bayern Munich v Manchester City | Tuesday 19:45 - live on Sky Sports 2
The newest superpower of European football travel to Bavaria to take on one of the established elite, in one of the most eagerly anticipated Champions League games of the competition so far.
Champions League debutants Manchester City take on four-time European Cup winners Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in their second Group A fixture, the group which when drawn out, was menacingly dubbed the ‘Group of Death'.
City were held in their opening game in Europe's most prestigious club competition by an impressive Napoli side. The tactically strong Italians were effective on the counter attack and caused the hosts plenty of problems before taking a 1-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium. It took a brilliant free from full-back Alexander Kolarov to level matters and the points were shared.
Bayern put in a brutally efficient performance in their Group A opener when winning 2-0 away at Villarreal. Goals by Toni Kroos and Rafinha ended Villarreal's run of nine straight home European victories and maintained the visitors' terrific start to the season.
The match betting for this clash sees home side Bayern installed as the firm favourites at EVS. The German heavyweights lost their first game in the Bundesliga this season but since then have been in unstoppable form, winning eight successive matches in all competitions. City's start to the campaign is equally as impressive, taking 16 points from a possible 18 in the Premier League and that aforementioned draw in Europe. The Citizens can be backed at 11/4 to do what their arch rivals Manchester United have failed to do on four occasions, win away to Bayern.
The hosts' form could scarcely be better and new manager Jupp Heynckes has brought new life to Bayern since taking over for a third stint in Munich earlier this year. Goals have certainly not been a problem for ‘Die Bayern', leading goalscorer Mario Gomez (5/1 first scorer, 5/4 anytime) has been in prolific form, notching on eight occasions thus far. He will likely be flanked by the explosive and exciting duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. On their day Dutchman Robben and France's Ribery (7/1 first scorer) are amongst the best players in Europe and pose a serious threat to City's backline.
The men from Manchester can boast just an impressive a frontline as Bayern with the attacking quartet of Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, David Silva and Samir Nasri anchored by the brilliant Yaya Toure and solid Gareth Barry. Dzeko (7/1 first scorer) scored against Munich on the first game of last season for Wolfsburg and has been amongst the goals already for City this season. Playing alongside the Bosnian international has been the amazing Argentine Sergio Aguero. The son-in-law of Diego Maradona, Aguero has left compatriot Carlos Tevez firmly in the shadows with his quality link up play and devastating finishing. Aguero is priced at 6/1 to break the deadlock at the Allianz.
The William Hill Match Winner offer for Tuesday's Champions League encounter is for both teams to score two or more goals at 5/1. Enhanced from 4/1, with some of the finest attacking talent in world football going head to head in Bavaria, us neutrals should be in for a treat.
In my opinion, City could be in for a rude awakening. Roberto Mancini's team were sluggish in the opening exchanges at home to Napoli and will need a much improved team effort to become the first English team since Norwich City in 1994 to beat Bayern in their own backyard.
Bayern/Bayern in the Double Result market at 2/1 seems the bet for me and I will also be getting on the over 2.5 selection at 10/11 in the Total Match Goals market.
I can honestly say that this is the first match of the season I am genuinely excited about, forget Utd v Arsenal or Utd v Chelsea, this could turn out to be a classic! (Cue 0-0!...10/1 by the way!)
