German Bundesliga Opta Facts 22-24 Jan

FC Bayern München - Hamburger SV

  • FCB have faced HSV 101 times in the Bundesliga, winning on 60 occasions (also 60 wins vs. VfB), scoring 229 goals in the process. No other top-flight side has scored so frequently against a particular opponent.
  • Hamburger SV haven't won any of their last 14 competitive meetings against the Bavarians (D3, L11). Their last victory over Bayern dates back to September 2009 (1-0). Current boss Bruno Labbadia was also in charge of HSV on that occasion.
  • Pep Guardiola is leaving Bayern in summer and will be replaced by Carlo Ancelotti. They lifted the treble under Jupp Heynckes when a similar situation arose in 2013.
  • Bayern claimed 46 points before Christmas - a tally which has only been bettered once. They accumulated 47 in Guardiola's maiden campaign in the job (2013/14).
  • FC Bayern have lost their first fixture after the winter break in two of the last four seasons (W2). The 4-1 loss in Wolfsburg last year was their heaviest league defeat under Guardiola.
  • Hamburg, like Bayern, let in just five first-half goals before the winter break - a league low. HSV shipped 18 goals after the interval though (league high together with 3 other teams), six times as many as the Munich club (3).
  • HSV have won each of their last three matches on a Friday including victories over Gladbach and BVB. However, they lost 5-0 in Munich in matchday one's Friday fixture.
  • Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who is HSV's top scorer this season with six goals, has netted four goals in his last three Friday appearances. Only Mainz's Yunus Malli has scored as often as Lasogga on a Friday this term.
  • Robert Lewandowski (15) and Thomas Müller (14) bagged 29 goals between them before Christmas. They are hot on the heels of Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko and Grafite, who netted 54 goals in 2008/09 and are the most potent duo in the history of the division so far.
  • Thomas Müller opened the scoring in Hannover on matchday 17, something he has now managed five times this term (more often than any other player). Bayern have won each of the last 48 league fixtures in which the World Cup winner has found the net.

1. FC Köln - VfB Stuttgart

  • Köln are unbeaten in five Bundesliga meetings with VfB (W2, D3). Their last defeat in this fixture dates back to April 2011 (3-1).
  • However, the Billy Goats haven't beaten Stuttgart at home in the top flight for 15 years (or 8 meetings). That victory came in October 2000 (3-2).
  • Peter Stöger's side have 24 points at the halfway stage. The last time their tally was higher at this point was over 15 years ago (25 in 2000/01, finished that season 10th).
  • VfB currently have 15 points. They've only had fewer after 17 games on two occasions in Bundesliga history: 1974/75 (14, a season which ended in relegation) and 2010/11 (12).
  • Stuttgart were never ranked higher than 14th in 2015. They climbed into that slot on the last day of the 2014/15 campaign!
  • Köln lost just two of their 18 Bundesliga home games in 2015 (W6, D10). The only sides to take all three points from Cologne were Hannover (1-0 on MD9) and FCA (1-0 on MD15).
  • VfB have claimed five points on the road this term - a league low. Their only win on their travels in 2015/16 came in Hannover (3-1 on MD6).
  • Stuttgart are on a three-game unbeaten run (same as Hertha) in the league for the first time this season (W1, D2). Only FCA are currently on a longer streak without defeat (5 games).
  • VfB are notoriously slow out of the traps. They have lost their first game of a calendar year on the last four occasions. The last victory in this fixture dates back to 2011 (1-0 vs. Mainz).
  • Stuttgart top scorer Daniel Didavi has been directly involved in 45% (10/22) of his side's Bundesliga goals in 2015/16 (7 goals, 3 assists).
  • Anthony Modeste played a role in half of Köln's goals in the first half of the season (7 goals, 2 assists). No other Bundesliga player has been involved in such a high proportion of his side's strikes.
  • Stuttgart's new recruit Kevin Großkreutz made his Bundesliga debut against Köln in August 2009 (for BVB). He has been directly involved in 39 goals to date (23 goals, 26 assists). He has come out on top in six of his seven league clashes vs. the Billy Goats (L1).
  • Toni Sunjic received a red card vs. VfL on matchday 17 and will miss this weekend's fixture. Stuttgart players have been sent off on four occasions this term - a league high.

Hannover 96 - SV Darmstadt 98

  • The two teams have met twice in Darmstadt already this season. They drew 2-2 in the season opener and then the Lilies ran out 2-1 winners in the DFB Cup second round tie.
  • The sides have met 17 times competitively, with the Lilies edging the head-to-head record (W6 D7 L4). 96's last victory over SVD dates back to July 1992, when they won 5-0 at home.
  • 14 points from 17 games represents Hannover's worst first half of a season since 1988/89. Back then they'd only collected 12 points by this stage (converted to the three-points-per-win rule) and were relegated to the second division at the end of the campaign.
  • Darmstadt accrued their highest ever points tally in the first half of the Bundesliga season (18). The Lilies had fewer points to their name by this stage in both their previous top-flight terms: 14 in 1978/79 and 15 in 1981/82 (both converted to the three-points-per-win rule).
  • 96 collected just 27 points from their 34 Bundesliga games in 2015, making them the worst team in that timeframe (excluding relegated and promoted sides).
  • Hannover lost five of their last six games before the winter break - the only exception was the 4-0 victory over Ingolstadt on MD14.
  • Darmstadt won just one of their last eight Bundesliga games before the winter break (D2, L5) - they ran out 1-0 winners in Frankfurt.
  • 10 of the Lilies' 17 goals (59%) this season have come from set pieces, proportionally speaking, a league high. Only FCA and FCB (both 10) can match their tally of dead ball goals.
  • Only four men (Otto Rehhagel, Jupp Heynckes, Erich Ribbeck and Udo Lattek) have taken charge of more Bundesliga games than Hannover's new boss Thomas Schaaf (513). He guided Bremen to the title in 2004 and three DFB Cup triumphs (1999, 2004 & 2009).
  • Christian Schulz, who made his top-flight debut for SVW under Schaaf (vs. Nuremberg in Feb. 2003), is on the verge of his 350th Bundesliga appearance. Only two active players have featured more often in the top tier: Claudio Pizarro (397) and Stefan Kießling (361).
  • SVD's Konstantin Rausch (2005-13, 150 Bundesliga games, 9 goals) and Jan Rosenthal (2000-10, 80 Bundesliga games and 11 goals) were previously contracted to 96.

Hertha BSC - FC Augsburg

  • Hertha are unbeaten at home against FCA (W2, D2). Three of these games took place in the Bundesliga - the other came in the 2010/11 second-division campaign. Both sides were promoted at the end of that season.
  • The Berlin side have won their last two Bundesliga games against FCA 1-0. Salomon Kalou grabbed the winner on both occasions.
  • BSC (12 points, GD: +6) and Augsburg (13, GD: +7) were the best teams in the league over the course of the last five matchdays. They were the only sides to end 2015 with a run of three straight Bundesliga victories.
  • The club from the capital have won their last three home games in the league, conceding just one goal in the process. However, the Swabians have won their last three Bundesliga away games. They kept three clean sheets in that timeframe - a new club record.
  • FCA have won a club record five away games on the bounce in all competitions. This streak includes DFB Cup success in Freiburg (3-0) and a 3-1 Europa League win in Belgrade.
  • Hertha have gone 331 minutes without conceding in all competitions. FCA have let in just one goal in their last five league games, fewer than any other side in that timeframe.
  • Victory over Augsburg would see Hertha overtake their total tally of points won in 2014/15 (35) as well as the number they claimed at home in the same timeframe (22).
  • The sides have mixed records in the first Bundesliga game of a calendar year. Hertha have lost their opening game of the year in each of their last three top-flight campaigns - FCA are unbeaten in this fixture for three years (W2, D1).
  • FCA and BSC have claimed just one point apiece from losing positions this term - fewer than any other side competing in the Bundesliga in 2015/16.
  • Vladimir Darida has covered more ground than any other Bundesliga player this term (217.8km) and has opened the scoring in three of Hertha's last four games in all competitions.
  • Vedad Ibisevic has created Hertha's last three league goals. He has been involved in 10 strikes in just 10 appearances this term (6 goals, 4 assists) - including seven in five at home (4 goals, 3 assists).

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim - Bayer 04 Leverkusen

  • Leverkusen have won 13 of their 15 Bundesliga meetings with Hoffenheim (D1, L1). Against no other side have TSG lost as many top-tier games, while Bayer 04 haven't lost to a side they've met at least nine times in the BL so rarely.
  • 13 points from 17 matches is Hoffenheim's second-worst return in their Bundesliga history. The tally was only lower in 2012/13, when they avoided the drop by virtue of beating Kaiserslautern in the relegation play-off.
  • This is Bayer 04's worst campaign since 2011/12, when they had 26 points after 17 matches (currently 27). They've spent one week in the top four so far (3rd on MD2).
  • TSG have won their first game after the winter break just once in the club's Bundesliga. This triumph came in their inaugural season (otherwise D2, L4).
  • Bayer 04 have won their last three games in all competitions. In fact, their last eight competitive games have gone well (W4, D3, L1 - 2-1 in Berlin on MD15).
  • Hoffenheim have won just one of their last 10 Bundesliga matches (D5, L4), but are unbeaten at home under Huub Stevens (W1, D2).
  • Leverkusen have scored in each of their last 14 competitive outings (34 goals in total, 2.4 on average) - a record under Roger Schmidt.
  • TSG's 17 goals (the same as Darmstadt and Bremen) is their worst return after 17 games (previous worst was 19 in 2011/12). Only Ingolstadt have scored fewer goals in the Bundesliga this term (11).
  • In his last 14 competitive outings alone, Leverkusen's Javier Hernandez has scored as many goals as TSG have in total this term (17).
  • In seven league games under Huub Stevens, Hoffenheim have kept as many clean sheets as in the previous 21 under Markus Gisdol (3).
  • Stefan Kießling is back in form and has been directly involved in six goals in his last three competitive outings (3 goals, 3 assists).

FC Ingolstadt 04 - 1. FSV Mainz 05

  • FCI's inaugural Bundesliga campaign kicked off against Mainz. Ingolstadt won that meeting thanks to Lukas Hinterseer's strike (1-0).
  • Die Schanzer have 20 points currently - meaning they are third from bottom in the all-time Bundesliga table. A draw this weekend would see them pull level with SpVgg Greuther Fürth, who claimed 21 in the whole of the 2012/13 campaign.
  • FCI's last nine league games garnered six points - they claimed 14 in the previous eight.
  • This is Mainz's third-best Bundesliga campaign to date (24 points, GD: 0). They have had a higher tally after 17 games on just two occasions: 2010/11 (33) and 2012/13 (26).
  • Only Bayern (8) have conceded fewer goals than FCI (18, same as Hertha). The record champions are the only side to have allowed their opponents fewer shots on target (37) than Hasenhüttl's men (60).
  • 1. FSV Mainz 05 traditionally race out of the traps after Christmas. They are unbeaten in the first fixture of a calendar year for three years (W2, D1) - including 2015's 5-0 rout of newly promoted Paderborn.
  • Neither side scored in their final two games before the break. The only other side who failed to net in that timeframe are Hannover 96.
  • Die Schanzer haven't scored a first-half goal since the end of October. 9 of their 11 Bundesliga goals have come after the break (82%, proportionally speaking a league high). They have the division's lowest chance (7%) and clear-cut chance (24%) conversion rate.
  • Pascal Groß has created 49 chances this term, but has notched up only two assists. FCI's top scorer this term is Moritz Hartmann (3) - no other player has netted more than once.
  • Yunus Malli was Mainz's top scorer in 2015 (14 goals) - only five players netted more frequently than the 05er in that timeframe.

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Borussia Dortmund

  • BVB are on top in this match up (W30 D28 L29). This season's previous meeting came in the Saturday evening slot too (4-0 to Dortmund in Tuchel's first match in charge).
  • Only Bayern (31) have picked up more points than Gladbach since Andre Schubert took over after matchday five (29). In that timeframe BVB claimed 23 points (4th).
  • Borussia Dortmund picked up 23 points more under Tuchel in the first half of 2015/16 than under Jürgen Klopp last term (38 vs. 15). That is their best return since the title-winning campaign of 2010/11 (43 on that occasion).
  • Gladbach have been strong at home under Schubert (W6, D1 - 0-0 vs. FCI on MD12).
  • BVB have not lost their first game after the winter break for 11 years (W7, D4). Their last defeat in that slot came against local rivals Schalke (1-0 in 2004).
  • Gladbach have not lost a home game on Saturday evening since February 2011 (3-2 to VfB, otherwise W6, D3). Dortmund have won both of their games in this timeslot this term, including a 4-0 win over BMG on matchday one.
  • The Foals have scored 32 goals under Andre Schubert - more than any other Bundesliga side in that timeframe. They have also netted a league-high eight goals from range this term.
  • BVB have the most potent attack this term (47 goals). Top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (18) has scored more than FCI (11), TSG, SVW and SVD (17 each).
  • Marco Reus used to play for BMG (contributing to 56 goals in 97 Bundesliga appearances for the Foals between 2009 and 2012). Jonas Hofmann joined Gladbach from BVB during the winter break.
  • Gladbach captain Granit Xhaka will miss the match through suspension. He has now been sent off three times this season and is the youngest player to see red on five occasions in the Bundesliga.

Eintracht Frankfurt - VfL Wolfsburg

  • Eintracht have won just two of their last 20 Bundesliga meetings with VfL (L8, D10).
  • SGE have an average-points-per-game record of 0.81 against Wolfsburg - they don't have a lower return against any other Bundesliga side that they've played in at least two seasons.
  • But Frankfurt have scored at least once in each of the last 11 games against Wolfsburg (17 in total). SGE don't boast a longer goal scoring run against any other Bundesliga team.
  • The Wolves are without a win in their last four Bundesliga games (D2, L2) - this is VfL's longest winless run since March 2014 and consequently their longest under Dieter Hecking!
  • VfL have 26 points after 17 games - eight fewer than this point last season. However, when they lifted the title in 2008/09 they also had 26 points at the midway stage.
  • Hecking's men started 2015 with a 4-1 rout of FC Bayern. The Wolves have lost just one of their last five calendar year curtain raisers (3-1 to Hannover in 2014).
  • The Eagles have amassed just two points from their seven games against sides involved in European competitions so far this term (F5, A17). Both of these points came at home though.
  • VfL have won just one of their last nine away games in the league (D4, L4) - 1-0 in Darmstadt on matchday 10. 23% of their points (6/26) have come on the road this term - a league low.
  • Eintracht's recent 2-1 victory over SVW was their only win in their last six at home (D2, L3).
  • Armin Veh, VfL Wolfsburg manager in the 2009/10 season, has lost his last four Bundesliga games against the Wolves. Veh hasn't suffered a worse run of results against any other Bundesliga side.
  • During the winter break SGE brought Szabolcs Huszti back to the Bundesliga. The Hungarian has celebrated more wins over Wolfsburg (5) than any other team.

FC Schalke 04- SV Werder Bremen

  • Schalke's recent Bundesliga form against Bremen is particularly impressive (W8, D3). Werder have netted just three goals in the last six league meetings between the sides.
  • Andre Breitenreiter's first league game in charge of S04 was the 3-0 win in Bremen on the opening weekend of the campaign, their highest league victory to date in 2015/16.
  • Schalke's record after 17 Bundesliga games this season is identical to the one they had at this stage of 2014/15 (W8, D3, L6). Roberto Di Matteo was the head coach on that occasion.
  • Werder are without a win in five (D2, L3) - the longest ongoing run of such in the Bundesliga. Their last victory in the league came in November (2-1 in Augsburg).
  • S04 have won their opening league game of a calendar year on the last four occasions. The last time they dropped points in this fixture was at the start of 2011 (1-0 defeat to HSV).
  • Werder have picked up 11 of their 15 points this term away from home. Three of their four wins this season have come on their travels (in Hoffenheim, Mainz and Augsburg).
  • Schalke have a 100% record against the teams who occupied the bottom five slots over Christmas, scoring 10 times and conceding only one goal in the process.
  • Werder have gone 20 games without a Bundesliga clean sheet - an ongoing negative club record and also the longest currently ongoing run of such in the top flight at the moment.
  • Werder have claimed 10 points from their four Sunday games to date this term. S04 have lost four of their last five in this slot (D1), accumulating just seven points from their seven Sunday games in 2015/16.
  • Franco Di Santo joined Schalke from Bremen at the end of July 2015. He has made 17 league appearances for the Royal Blues (1 goal + 1 assist) but was directly involved in 23 goals in Bundesliga 49 appearances for Werder (17 goals + 6 assists).
  • Clemens Fritz could make his 300th Bundesliga appearance this weekend (43 for Bayer 04 and 256 for SVW to date).
