League Cup Opta Facts - semi-finals

Sunderland v Manchester United

  • Manchester United have won eight of their last nine League Cup semi-final ties, losing only to Chelsea in 2004/05.
  • The Red Devils will be playing the first leg away from home for the fifth successive time that they have reached the League Cup semi-final. They have won none of the previous four first legs in this run (D2 L2) but have progressed through the last three.
  • This is Sunderland's fourth semi-final appearance in this competition. They have played the first leg at home in all three previous appearances, progressing to the final once (1984/85).
  • Since the last semi-final replays in 1986/87, only 17 of the 52 League Cup semi-finalists to play the first leg on home soil have progressed to the final (33%).
  • Sunderland and Manchester United have both won one of two previous League Cup ties between the sides; the Red Devils won a Round 3 second replay in 1976/77 before the Black Cats won 2-1 in Round 4 in 2000/01.
  • Javier Hernandez has scored three goals in three League Cup appearances this term.
  • Manchester United are unbeaten in 20 meetings with Sunderland in all competitions (W16 D4), though their last defeat was in the League Cup in 2000/01.
  • Adnan Januzaj scored two goals in six second-half minutes as Manchester United came from behind to win 2-1 at Sunderland in the Premier League in October; his first two goals for the club.
  • Manchester United have scored in all but one of their last 16 League Cup games, netting 37 goals in total in this run.
  • Manchester United's last six away League Cup games have seen 29 goals scored, an average of 4.8 goals per game.

Manchester City v West Ham United

  • Manchester City have lost their last three League Cup semi-final ties, not reaching the final since 1975/76.
  • West Ham have lost five of their last six League Cup semi-final ties, not making the final since 1980/81.
  • This is the first season since 2009/10 in which all four League Cup semi-finalists have come from the Premier League.
  • Man City have never kept a clean sheet in seven previous League Cup semi-final first legs, conceding exactly once in their last six.
  • West Ham, however, have conceded 24 goals in eight previous League Cup semi-final first legs (three per game) and have also never managed a shutout.
  • This is only the second time the Citizens and the Hammers have met in this competition; in the 1984/85 third round, City beat West Ham 2-1 in a replay.
  • Edin Dzeko has scored four goals in three League Cup appearances this season.
  • Only Birmingham's Chris Burke (four) has made more Capital One Cup assists this season than James Milner (three).
  • Manchester City have won five and lost none of their last seven meetings with West Ham in all competitions.
  • The Hammers have scored in 20 of their last 21 League Cup games.
