Rochdale v Chesterfield

  • The sides have been drawn together once before in the League Cup, in the first round in 1999/2000. In a two legged affair, the Spireites won both clashes 2-1 to progress to the next round.
  • Chesterfield have won four of the last five meetings between the sides in all competitions.
  • Jack Lester has netted a brace on each of his last two clashes with Rochdale.
  • Dale have only won two of their last 19 League Cup first round games, though they did win away at Championship side Barnsley at this stage last season.
  • Chesterfield have only progressed past the first round in one of the last eight seasons, reaching the fourth round in 2007.

Port Vale v Huddersfield Town

  • Huddersfield came out on top in the only previous League Cup tie between the sides, winning 4-3 on aggregate in the first round of the 1995/96 competition.
  • The Terriers are unbeaten in five trips to Vale Park, winning three and drawing two.
  • Vale are unbeaten in five home League Cup games against teams from a higher division.
  • Huddersfield have progressed past the first round in each of the last three seasons, but haven't made it to round 3 since 2003.

Rotherham United v Leicester City

  • The Millers have won all three previous clashes between the sides in the League Cup.
  • Rotherham have conceded four goals in each of their last two League Cup games.
  • The Millers have won their last two home games against teams from higher divisions in the League Cup, after having gone nine without a win.
  • Leicester's last drawn League Cup game was the semi-final first leg against Aston Villa in 2000 (0-0) - they have played 30 games in the competition since that stalemate.
  • The Foxes have found the net in each of their last 20 league cup games.
  • Leicester have made it past the first round in their last eight appearances at this stage, the joint-best current run of any side in the competition already this season (with Leeds and Hartlepool).

Hull City v Macclesfield Town

  • Hull City were victorious in the only previous League Cup tie between these sides, winning 2-1 on aggregate in the first round of the 1998 competition.
  • The Tigers have only lost one of 11 home League Cup games against lower ranked opposition, winning nine of them.
  • The Silkmen have lost six of their last seven League Cup games.
  • Macclesfield have only lost of their last six trips to Hull in all competitions.

Hartlepool United v Sheffield United

  • This is the second successive season that these sides have met in the first round of the Carling Cup. Hartlepool claimed a 2-0 victory over United last season to progress.
  • The Blades got the better of Hartlepool in the only other previous League Cup meeting between the sides, however, winning 4-2 on aggregate in the first round of the 1988/89 competition.
  • Sheffield United haven't met a team from the same division in the League Cup since a 0-2 defeat at Reading in 2005.
  • Hartlepool haven't been knocked out in the first round of the League Cup since the 2002/03 competition, when they lost 1-2 at Tranmere.
  • United have made it past the first round on 19 of the 24 occasions that they played at this stage, the highest proportion of any side.

Leeds United v Bradford City

  • Leeds won the only previous League Cup clash between these sides 1-0 in the third round of the 1998/99 trophy thanks to a goal from Harry Kewell.
  • The Whites are unbeaten in 13 clashes with their Yorkshire Rivals in all competitions, not tasting defeat against the Bantams since September 1986.
  • Leeds have won all eight previous first round matches in the League Cup, scoring 19 and conceding just three.
  • Bradford have only won one of their last eight away games in the League Cup.

Doncaster Rovers v Tranmere Rovers

  • The last four meetings between these sides in all competitions have seen a total of just two goals netted.
  • Rovers have netted 20 goals in their last nine home league cup games, but have conceded 15 in the last six.
  • Tranmere have lost seven of their last nine League Cup games.
  • Rovers have failed to score in each of their last five home meetings with Tranmere, although four of them have ended 0-0.

Walsall v Middlesbrough

  • Walsall have won five of their last six clashes with ‘Boro in all competitions.
  • The sides have never met in the League Cup, although Middlesbrough did knock out the Saddlers from the 1929 FA Cup, winning 5-1 at home in a replay after a 1-1 draw.
  • Middlesbrough have lost five of their last seven away League Cup games.
  • The Saddlers have lost in the first round of the competition for the last four seasons.

Barnsley v Morecambe

  • This will be the first ever meeting between Barnsley and Morecambe.
  • The Tykes have only won two of their last 10 first round games at Oakwell.
  • All seven of Morecambe's previous League Cup games have been against opponents from the second tier. The Shrimps have won three and drawn four of these clashes.
  • Morecambe have conceded 14 goals in their last three away games in the League Cup.

Accrington Stanley v Scunthorpe United

  • These sides have never been drawn together in the League Cup, but have faced each other twice in the FA Cup, with both sides progressing once.
  • None of the last seven meetings between the sides in all competitions at Accrington have ended in draws.
  • Stanley's last five League Cup games have seen a total of 19 goals netted, with both sides scoring in each.
  • The Iron have only won one of their last 16 away games in the first round of the League Cup; a 2-0 first leg win at Scarborough in 1998.
  • Scunthorpe have only scored once in their last six League Cup away games in the first round combined.

Derby County v Shrewsbury Town

  • The last time these sides met was in the 1996 League Cup, when Derby were victorious, beating the Shrews 4-2 on aggregate.
  • The Rams have been knocked out in the first round by a League Two side in each of the last two seasons.
  • Shrewsbury have lost their last eight away League Cup games and are winless in 16 on the road in the competition.
  • The Shrews' last victory at Derby came back in December 1982.

Oldham Athletic v Carlisle United

  • These sides have been drawn together twice before in the League Cup, with each side progressing on one occasion.
  • The sides met in Carlisle at this stage two years ago, and the Cumbrians progressed with a 1-0 win.
  • The Latics have only won one of their last nine League Cup games.
  • After losing nine consecutive away games in the competition between 1997 and 2006, Carlisle have won three of their last four on the road.

Bury v Coventry City

  • This will be the first meeting between the Shakers and the Sky Blues in a cup competition and the first meeting in any competition since February 1967.
  • Bury have lost their last five League Cup games, failing to score in any of them.
  • The Sky Blues have been eliminated at the first round stage at the hands of a lower-ranked side in each of the last two seasons.
  • Only one of Coventry's last 35 League Cup games has ended in a draw at the end of play.

Sheffield Wednesday v Blackpool

  • The sides have been drawn together twice in the League Cup before. The Owls progressed after a replay in round two in 1978, before Blackpool got revenge at the same stage in 1989.
  • The Owls have lost their last six League Cup ties against teams from a higher division, with three of the last five ending 2-4.
  • The 1991 League Cup champions have won their last two clashes with the Tangerines - both in the 2009/10 Championship season that saw Blackpool promoted to the Premier League and Wednesday relegated to League One.
  • Blackpool have only kept one clean sheet in their last 14 games in the competition.

Burnley v Burton Albion

  • Burnley's 3-1 victory over Burton in last season's FA Cup was the first-ever meeting between the sides.
  • Clarets midfielder Chris Eagles bagged a brace in that fixture.
  • Burnley have progressed through the first round in six of the last seven years in which they've entered the League Cup at this stage.
  • Eddie Howe's men have only lost two of their last 15 League Cup games against lower division sides.
  • Burton have never won a League Cup game, losing 1-5 to Reading and 1-4 to Cardiff.

Preston North End v Crewe Alexandra

  • Preston won the only previous League Cup meeting between these sides 2-0, in the second round of the 1967 competition.
  • PNE have won all of their last five clashes with the Railwaymen in all competitions.
  • Alexandra have failed to win any of their last seven trips to Preston and haven't won at Deepdale since August 1993.
  • Two of Preston's last three home League Cup games have finished with a 5-1 scoreline (one win, one defeat).
  • Preston have only ever lost two of their 25 League Cup matches at home to sides from a lower division.

Nottingham Forest v Notts County

  • The only previous League Cup meeting between these sides saw a 4-0 win to Forest in the third round in 1978.
  • This will be the first meeting between these city rivals in any competition since February 1994.
  • Forest have only won two of their last six first round matches in the League Cup, despite all of these being against fourth-tier sides.
  • Notts County have alternated between victory and defeat in each of their last seven games at this stage of the trophy, winning 1-0 at Plymouth last season.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Gillingham

  • The Seagulls have only won two of their last 11 League Cup games outright.
  • The sides have been drawn together three times before in the League Cup; the Gills have progressed twice, with Brighton going through once.
  • Albion have won six of their last eight clashes with Gillingham, with the Kent-based side winning just once.
  • Gillingham have only won two of 36 away games at higher ranked opponents in the League Cup, with their last victory a 1-0 win at Coventry in 1996/97.

AFC Bournemouth v Dagenham & Redbridge

  • The sides have never met before in a cup competition, although Bournemouth have won four of the six previous league clashes, losing just one.
  • The Cherries have only won one of their last 19 League Cup matches outright, and have lost in the first round in each of the last five seasons.
  • The South Coast side haven't won League Cup match at Dean Court since a 1-0 first round win over Barnet in August 1999.
  • The Daggers have lost all four previous League Cup matches they've been involved in, despite scoring exactly one goal each time.

Ipswich Town v Northampton Town

  • This is the third time that these sides, who met in the fourth round last season, have been drawn together in the League Cup, with Ipswich progressing on each previous occasion.
  • The Cobblers haven't beaten Ipswich in any competition since September 1964.
  • Last season's semi-finalists Ipswich have won 12 of their last 14 League Cup games at Portman Road and have scored in 21 of their last 22 home games in the competition.
  • Northampton, on the other hand, have only won three of their last 26 League Cup away games.

Cheltenham Town v Milton Keynes Dons

  • MK Dons have won the two previous clashes between these sides, both in the league, netting eight goals in total and conceding four.
  • In the two previous meetings, a total of three players were sent off, whilst two players netted hat-tricks.
  • The Robins have scored in 10 of their last 11 League Cup games, but conceded in 10 of their last 12.
  • The Dons' last nine League Cup games have seen a total of 39 goals netted - an average of over four per game.
  • This will be the Dons' first ever League Cup game against a team from a lower division.

Bristol Rovers v Watford

  • The Hornets won 1-0 when the sides met for the first and only time in the League Cup in 2008/09.
  • The Pirates have only won two of their last 13 League Cup games outright, and lost 1-6 at Oxford at this stage of the competition last term.
  • Rovers have only managed one clean sheet in 22 League Cup games.
  • The Hornets have won nine of their last 10 League Cup first round games, losing the other against archrivals Luton.

Plymouth Argyle v Millwall

  • The Pilgrims have only progressed past the first round of the League Cup in two of the last 18 seasons.
  • The Lions have only kept one clean sheet in their last 16 away games in the competition.
  • Six of the last eight clashes between the sides in all competitions have ended in draws, with either side picking up one win apiece.
  • The Lions have failed to score on each of their last four visits to Home Park, although three of the four games ended 0-0 (with Plymouth winning the other 3-0).

Oxford United v Cardiff City

  • Oxford won both legs 2-1 to progress when they met Cardiff in the 1979 competition, the only previous League Cup meeting between these sides.
  • Cardiff have conceded exactly one goal in seven of their last eight League Cup games, shipping two in the other.
  • The U's have lost four of their last five League Cup games, though they did beat Bristol Rovers 6-1 at this stage last season.
  • The Bluebirds have only won one of their last 11 games away at Oxford.

West Ham United v Aldershot Town

  • The Hammers have only entered the League Cup at this stage four times in their history, and have won all four previous games - all four victories came at Upton Park.
  • The Shots have only won one of their last 21 League Cup games and haven't progressed past the first round since 1990.
  • West Ham have won 10 of their last 11 home League Cup games, with the only defeat being a 1-2 Quarter Final defeat to Everton in 2007.
  • The sides have only met twice before, with both games coming in the 1991 FA Cup. After a 0-0 draw in Aldershot, the Hammers progressed with a 6-1 win in the replay at Upton Park.
  • Aldershot have made it past the first round on just 10 of the 34 occasions that they have played at this stage, the lowest proportion of any side.

Southampton v Torquay United

  • Southampton are unbeaten in all six home meetings with Torquay in all competitions, winning three and drawing three.
  • The Saints have won their last six home League Cup games against lower ranked sides, netting a total of 22 goals in the process.
  • The Gulls haven't won any of their last eight games in the competition, not progressing past the first round since 2002.
  • Torquay have only won one of their last 26 League Cup games against teams from the top two divisions, and even that 3-2 home victory over Gillingham in 2001 saw the Gulls eliminated having lost the first game of the two legged affair 0-2.

Charlton Athletic v Reading

  • The sides were drawn together in the League Cup first round in 1981/82, a tie which saw the Addicks progress 5-3 on aggregate.
  • Charlton are unbeaten in five home meetings with Reading in all comps, not losing at home to the Royals since October 1994.
  • 2007 Quarter Finalists Charlton have lost their last four League Cup games, going out at the first hurdle in each of the last three campaigns.
  • The Royals have scored 28 goals in their last 11 League Cup games, netting at least once in each of them.

Portsmouth v Barnet

  • Portsmouth beat Barnet 5-0 in the only previous meeting between these sides, in the 1991 FA Cup.
  • Pompey have found the net at least once in 14 of their last 15 home League Cup games.
  • The Bees, on the other hand, have lost their last five League Cup games, conceding a total of 17 goals in the process.
  • Barnet have been knocked out of the League Cup by a Championship side in four of the last five seasons, although they did win away at Cardiff (2-0) in the first round in 2007.

Stevenage v Peterborough United

  • This will be the first-ever meeting between Stevenage and the Posh.
  • Peterborough have progressed to the fourth and the third round of the League Cup in each of the last two seasons respectively.
  • The Posh netted 17 goals in the seven League Cup games they played in these two campaigns combined.
  • Stevenage have only played one League Cup game in their history, losing 1-2 at home to Portsmouth at this stage last season.

Southend United v Leyton Orient

  • Leyton Orient knocked out the Shrimpers 2-1 on aggregate on the only previous League Cup meeting between these sides in 1984/85.
  • Southend have won five of their last six home games in the League Cup, including the last three against higher ranked sides.
  • Leyton Orient have won three of their last four first round games in the League Cup, with all three victories coming by a scoreline of 2-1 on their opponent's ground.
  • The O's have only failed to score in just one of their last 19 League Cup first round games.

Wycombe Wanderers v Colchester United

  • The Chairboys have netted a goal in the last 10 minutes in each of their last three clashes with the U's.
  • Despite this, Wycombe haven't beaten Colchester at home since April 2000, a run of six games at Adams Park in all competitions.
  • The 2007 semi-finalists have now lost their last five League Cup ties and have been eliminated in the first round in each of the last four campaigns.
  • The U's have won their last two away games at this stage in the competition without conceding a goal.

Hereford United v Brentford

  • The Bees beat Hereford 2-1 on aggregate on the only previous League Cup meeting between these sides, at this stage of the competition in 1990/91.
  • Brentford have only won one of their last nine League Cup first round games outright.
  • The Bees have failed to score in six of their last eight League Cup games at this stage, netting two goals in each of the other two.
  • Brentford haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last 15 League Cup games.

Exeter City v Yeovil Town

  • The Grecians haven't won any of their last 21 League Cup games outright, and haven't passed through the first round in 12 attempts since 1994.
  • Should they fail to qualify this time, they will become the first side ever to be eliminated in the first round in 13 consecutive attempts in the League Cup.
  • Exeter have only kept one clean sheet in their last 22 League Cup games and have conceded 13 goals in their last four.
  • Yeovil have lost six of their last seven games in the competition.

Bristol City v Swindon Town

  • The sides have met twice before in the League Cup. Swindon progressed 5-3 on aggregate in 1987/88 and Bristol City progressed 3-2 on aggregate in 1982/83.
  • Swindon are unbeaten in six meetings with Bristol City in all comps, winning three and drawing three.
  • City have lost three of their last four League Cup games against lower ranked opposition.
  • Swindon, on the other hand, have only won one of their last 19 League Cup games against teams from higher divisions.
  • Town have only progressed past the first round in one of the last six seasons.

Crystal Palace v Crawley Town

  • This will be the first ever time these two sides have ever met in a competitive fixture.
  • Only twice since 1999 have Palace fallen at the first hurdle in the League Cup; in 2007 and 2008, both of these came against lower league opposition though.
  • This is Crawley's first ever campaign in the League Cup and it comes after their play-off win against AFC Wimbledon.
