Opta Facts and Stats: German Bundesliga February 21 - 22

FC Augsburg - Bayer 04 Leverkusen

  • FCA have lost all seven of their BL games against Bayer 04, scoring just six goals compared to Leverkusen's 19. Schalke and Hannover are the only other sides that Augsburg are yet to win against, although they have drawn with each of them at least twice.
  • Bayer 04 will leapfrog Augsburg in the table should they beat them, with fourth place a possibility.
  • Markus Weinzierl's side have won seven of their last nine games in the SGL-Arena, with their only defeat in that timeframe a 4-0 loss to FC Bayern on matchday 15.
  • Bayer 04 have lost back-to-back BL games for the first time under Roger Schmidt and for the first time since March 2014. Leverkusen have won just one of their last five fixtures; a 1-0 victory in Berlin on matchday 19.
  • Leverkusen have only had fewer points than they currently do after 21 games (32) once in the last seven seasons. They had 31 to their name in 2011/12, but still ended the campaign in fifth, salvaging Europa League qualification.
  • With 34 points from 21 games, FCA are having their best BL season (previously 31 points in 2013/14).
  • 13 of the 27 goals that Bayer 04 have conceded this season have come from set pieces, including 10 of the last 15. Proportionally, 48% of the goals they've let in have come from dead balls - a league high behind Augsburg (52%).
  • Heung-Min Son scored the second hat trick of his career in Leverkusen's 5-4 loss to Wolfsburg. The last BL player to suffer defeat despite grabbing a hat trick was Nürnberg's Marek Mintal in August 2004 (4-3 loss in Hamburg).
  • Halil Altintop has faced Bayer 04 17 times in the top flight and has suffered defeat in 12 of those games (W1, D4) - against no other BL team has he lost as often.  He hasn't been involved in a goal against them in over 18 hours (1,095 minutes).
  • Stefan Kießling has had a hand in nine goals in seven BL games vs. FCA (6 goals + 3 assists) - that's 1.3 per game on average. Against no other top-flight team is his record as good.
  • Dminik Kohr, on loan at FCA until the end of the season, has made eight BL appearances for Leverkusen (8 wins). Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker played 36 BL games for Bayer 04 between 2003 and 2008 (2 goals).

Sport-Club Freiburg - TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

  • Hoffenheim's 2-1 home win in February 2013 remains their only victory over SCF in their last 10 BL encounters (D6, L3). Freiburg's loss percentage against TSG (18.2%) isn't as low against any other current top-flight side.
  • Five of the last seven derbies between SCF and TSG have ended in a draw (1 win each).
  • There have been 25 goals in the last five derbies between the sides - an average of five per game. Freiburg have scored 13 of those goals, Hoffenheim 12. The meeting in Sinsheim earlier this season ended in a 3-3 draw.
  • SCF have celebrated two wins from their four games in 2015 (4-1 against Frankfurt and 2-0 in Berlin), already as many as they did in the whole of the first half of the season.
  • TSG were the last team yet to pick up a point in the second half of the season prior to beating Stuttgart 2-1 on the last matchday. However, Hoffenheim are yet to record back-to-back Bundesliga wins in this campaign.
  • Hoffenheim have lost five of their last six away games and have won just one of their last eight matches on the road - a 5-0 success in Berlin on matchday 17 (D2, L5).
  • Freiburg have scored 12 of their 23 league goals this season from set pieces (52.2%) - a league high. SCF scored from a throw-in and a corner during their 2-0 win in Berlin.
  • TSG have conceded 27 goals in their last 12 matches (2.3 per game), a league high in that timeframe. They only let in seven in their first nine BL fixtures this season (0.8 per game).
  • Oliver Baumann spent 14 years at Freiburg prior to leaving them in the summer. Only Richard Golz (180) has played more top-flight games between the sticks at SCF than Baumann (131, the same as Jörg Schmadtke).
  • Roman Bürki has made the most saves among BL keepers this season (95). He kept his sixth clean sheet of the campaign in the 2-0 win over Hertha, already one more than his predecessor Baumann managed in 2013/14.
  • Julian Schuster could make his 150th BL appearance in the game against TSG.

Hamburger SV - Borussia Mönchengladbach

  • Hamburg have won just one of their last eight BL games against Gladbach (D3, L4). That 1-0 triumph in February 2013 is also their only win in their last five home fixtures against Borussia (D1, L3).
  • HSV have lost each of their last three BL meetings with Borussia. They have never suffered more consecutive defeats against the Foals.
  • Gladbach have failed to record a victory in any of their eight BL games this season following a European fixture (D6, L2) and have scored just three goals in those eight matches.
  • Hamburg suffered the heaviest defeat in their BL history on the last matchday against Bayern (8-0).
  • Hamburg won just 34.1% of their challenges in Munich, the lowest percentage for the club since detailed stats started being collected in 2004/05. The visitors committed just three fouls in the second half as they shipped five goals.
  • With just 17 goals conceded, Gladbach have the second-best defence in the league after Bayern (9). Borussia have only let in fewer goals after 21 matchdays once before; they had shipped just 12 at this stage of 2011/12 and ended that campaign in fourth.
  • With a mere 14 goals scored, Hamburg have the worst attack in the division. They had never had fewer than 21 goals to their name after 21 BL matchdays before now.
  • Favre's side have lost four of their last six BL away games, winning just once in that timeframe (1-0 in Stuttgart on matchday 18). Borussia have netted just three away goals in that spell and never more than one per game.
  • Former Bremen and St. Pauli player Max Kruse has scored three goals in his last three games against HSV, including the winner in the meeting earlier this season (1-0). Kruse hasn't suffered defeat in any of his seven BL games against Hamburg (W5, D2).
  • Granit Xhaka, who headed an injury-time winner in Gladbach's 1-0 victory over Köln, is missing in Hamburg - he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season during the Rhine derby.
  • Gladbach's Martin Stranzl is set for his 250th BL game (109 for Borussia so far), while teammate Patrick Herrmann could make his 150th top-flight appearance (all for BMG).

1. FC Köln - Hannover 96

  • There has been a winner in each of the last 17 meetings between Köln and Hannover (Bundesliga and second division) - 96 have won 11 games, the Billy Goats six. The last time they shared the spoils was in May 1989 (2-2 draw in Hannover).
  • Köln conceded a goal for the first time this season in the meeting earlier in the campaign - Joselu scored in the fifth minute, enough to secure Hannover a 1-0 win.
  • Against no other team have Hannover celebrated as many BL away wins as they have against Köln (6).
  • 1. FC Köln haven't scored in any of their last three games (first two goalless draws then the recent 1-0 derby loss in Mönchengladbach) and have won just one of their last six matches (D3, L2).
  • With just one point from four games, this is Hannover's worst start to the second half of a season in five years - only VfB Stuttgart (also 1 point) are behind the Lower Saxony club in a table representing matches since the winter break.
  • For the first time in their BL history, Köln have drawn their last three home games 0-0. They are without a goal on home soil in almost six hours (347 minutes) and are without a win in Cologne in six games (D3, L3).
  • Köln have won just one of their first 10 home games this season (2-1 against Dortmund in mid-October) - a new record low in the club's BL history (always at least 2 wins previously).
  • Hannover are without a win in five successive BL away games for the first time under Tayfun Korkut (D2, L3) - their last victory on the road was a 2-0 triumph in Berlin in early November.
  • 1. FC Köln's sporting director Jörg Schmadtke held the same position at Hannover 96 between 2009 and 2013. In 2011/12, while under his leadership, 96 played in a European competition for the first time since 1992.
  • Ron-Robert Zieler was born in Cologne and played for several of the 1. FC Köln's youth sides before joining Manchester United. Former Hannover sporting director Jörg Schmadtke brought him to the Lower Saxony club in summer 2010.
  • Tayfun Korkut (Fenerbahce) and Peter Stöger (Rapid Vienna) met as players in a Champions League group-phase match. The meeting in Vienna in September 1996 ended in a 1-1 draw.

VfL Wolfsburg  - Hertha BSC

  • Wolfsburg have won three of their last four games against Hertha. However, the meeting in Berlin earlier this season ended in defeat for the Wolves. Salomon Kalou scored his first BL goal as VfL lost 1-0 and slipped to 12th in the table.
  • Dieter Hecking's men have lost just one of their 16 BL games since that match (W12, D3) - a 3-2 defeat away to Schalke in November.
  • VfL and Hertha were promoted to the Bundesliga together in 1997. The Wolves are set for their 600th BL game, while Hertha have been relegated twice in that timeframe (2010 and 2012).
  • Hertha are in a direct relegation spot for the second time this season. They have lost four of their last five BL games and have failed to find the back of the net in any of those defeats.
  • No Bundesliga side has ever failed to finish in the top four after collecting 44 points from their first 21 games (partially converted to the 3-points-per-win system).
  • Wolfsburg have never had as many points after 21 games before and had never been second in the table this far into a season. Their tally of 46 goals scored is also a new club best for VfL.
  • 15 of the goals Berlin have conceded have come from set pieces - together with Stuttgart. Wolfsburg have scored the second-most goals from dead balls (14) - only Bremen have netted more (16).
  • Bas Dost became the first Dutchman to score four goals in a BL game on the last matchday. He is the top scorer in the second half of the season (7 goals) and has already found the back of the net more often than in the whole of the calendar year of 2014 (5 times).
  • Pal Dardai made his first competitive appearance for Hertha in a match against VfL Wolfsburg - he was subbed on in a 1-0 second-division win in March 1997.
  • Thomas Kraft made his BL debut in Wolfsburg: He wore Bayern colours in their 1-1 draw in January 2011, even saving a penalty from VfL's Grafite.

FSV Mainz 05 - Eintracht Frankfurt

  • Frankfurt have played 10 league games in Mainz (Bundesliga and second division) and have never won there (D7, L3).
  • Mainz have won just one of their last 13 BL games (D5, L7); a 5-0 thumping of SC Paderborn in their first match after the winter break.
  • Frankfurt's chance-conversion rate of 18.5% is a league high. It's no surprise then that they have scored in each of their last 10 games - only Bayern (12) and Wolfsburg (16) are currently on a longer goalscoring run.
  • Eintracht finally kept a clean sheet in the match against Schalke after a run of seven league games without one. It was only their third clean sheet of the campaign - a league low together with Bremen.
  • Matchday 21 saw Mainz throw away a lead for the seventh time this season - they have dropped the most points from winning positions (17). Upcoming opponents Frankfurt are second in that list (15 points squandered after taking the lead).
  • Mainz have drawn almost half of their 21 games this season (10 draws), a league high. The record after 34 matches is 18 draws, set by Kaiserslautern in 1995/96 - FSV could yet break that.
  • Only Bayern (53) and Wolfsburg (46) have scored more goals than Eintracht (39). However, with 41 goals conceded, Frankfurt also have the second-worst defence in the league (Bremen have let in 43 goals).
  • There have already been 80 goals in matches involving Frankfurt this season, a league high. That means there has been an average of 3.8 goals per Eintracht game.
  • Usual U23s coach Martin Schmidt is the new Mainz manager following the dismissal of Kasper Hjulmand, who averaged just 1.05 points per game, making him the worst head coach in the club's BL history in that regard.
  • Elkin Soto has been involved in Mainz's last three goals (2 goals + 1 assist). He now faces his favourite opponents - against no other team has he scored as often as he has against Frankfurt (2 goals in 4 games), nor has he ever lost to them (W3, D1).

SC Paderborn 07- FC Bayern München

  • Paderborn travelled to Munich as league leaders in the meeting earlier this season, but Bayern inflicted a first top-flight defeat on them (4-0). Guardiola's side took the newcomers' place at the top of the table as a result.
  • SCP have already collected more points (23) than the last BL newcomers did in a whole season (Greuther Fürth: 21 points from 34 games in 2012/13).
  • Bayern's 8-0 annihilation of HSV was their biggest BL win in over 30 years (9-0 against Kickers Offenbach on 13th March 1984) and also Pep Guardiola's biggest competitive win as FCB manager.
  • The promoted side ended a 10-game winless streak in the Bundesliga thanks to their 2-1 victory in Hannover - it was SCP's longest run without a win in the top flight.
  • Arjen Robben has moved level with Alex Meier at the top of the BL goalscoring charts (14 goals each) - Paderborn are the only one of the other 17 top-flight teams that the Dutchman is yet to score against.
  • Thomas Müller had a hand in four goals in a BL game for the first time last weekend against HSV (2 goals + 2 assists) and having now set up seven goals is the third-best assist provider in the league - only De Bruyne (12) and Junuzovic (8) have set up more.
  • Alban Meha secured a 2-1 win in Hannover with a goal directly from a free kick. It was his 13th goal in that manner in either the Bundesliga or the second division - no other player can match that tally since his made his debut in the second tier in 2011/12.
  • January signing Srdjan Lakic scored his first goal for Paderborn in what was his fourth appearance for them - the Croat is the only player in SCP's squad that has found the back of the net against Bayern in the Bundesliga before (with Kaiserslautern in 2010).
  • Andre Breitenreiter made his BL debut as a player in a match against FC Bayern: He even put Hamburger SV ahead in their 1-1 draw in Munich on 17th September 1994.
  • Bayern's third-choice goalkeeper Tom Starke joined then newly-promoted second-division Paderborn in the second half of 2005/06 and pushed current number 1 goalkeeper at SCP Lukas Kruse down the pecking order.

FC Schalke 04 - SV Werder Bremen

  • Schalke are unbeaten in their last nine BL games against Bremen (W7, D2). The Royal Blues have even won each of their last four home meetings with Werder.
  • The meeting earlier this season saw Schalke win 3-0 in Bremen to record their first victory of the campaign (goals: Meyer, Neustädter, Barnetta).
  • Werder have made the perfect start to the second half of the season, with four wins from four games. They have secured victory in five successive BL matches for the first time in eight years (a run of 6 straight wins between November 2006 and January 2007).
  • 1985/86 and 1994/95 are the only other times Bremen have started the second half of the season with four wins - they finished second in both of those campaigns.
  • Schalke have lost just one of their 11 BL home games this season. Alongside the 2-1 loss to Köln in December, they have recorded seven wins and three draws.
  • Bremen may be bottom of the away table with just eight points and a -15 goal difference, but they have won two of their last five games on the road (3 defeats). However, Werder haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last 15 away matches.
  • Despite having the worst defence in the division (43 goals conceded), Werder sit eighth in the table. The team with the league's worst defensive record has never been as high in the standings after 21 games before.
  • Of the current BL managers, only Pep Guardiola (2.58) has a better points-per-game average than Viktor Skripnik (2.08) and Roberto Di Matteo (1.86).
  • Against no other team did Skripnik play as many games without losing during his playing days as he did against Schalke (9). S04 were also the only side he beat six times (3 draws) and one of his seven BL goals also came against the Royal Blues.
  • Zlatko Junuzovic has extended his contract at Bremen until 2018 and has been involved in nine goals in his last 10 BL games (4 goals + 5 assists).
  • Schalke's Joel Matip is set to make his 150th BL appearance. His teammate Atsuto Uchida is on the brink of his 100th start in the German top flight.

VfB Stuttgart - Borussia Dortmund

  • Stuttgart are without a win in nine BL matches against Dortmund (D5, L4). Their last victory was a 4-1 home triumph in January 2010.
  • VfB have thrown away a two-goal lead in each of the last two encounters. The meeting earlier this season ended in a 2-2 draw, while the last match-up in Stuttgart in March 2014 resulted in a 3-2 loss for the home side.
  • Stuttgart are without a win at home since beating Hannover 1-0 in late September - seven home matches have passed since then (D2, L5). They could equal their club record of going eight straight games on home soil without winning from the 1966/67 season.
  • Stevens' side are without a goal in 554 minutes of Bundesliga football at home. They're only 55 minutes short of equalling SC Freiburg's BL record (609 minutes in 2009/10). VfB's last home goal was scored my Martin Harnik in a 3-3 draw with Bayer 04 on 18th October 2014.
  • BVB have collected 15 wins and two draws from their last 17 BL games on a Friday, i.e. 47 of a possible 51 points! A 2-1 loss away at Schalke on 26th February 2010 is Dortmund's only defeat in their last 29 Friday matches (W21, D7).
  • Dortmund have picked up just one point from their three BL meetings with last-placed sides this season - in a 2-2 draw with Stuttgart earlier in the campaign. A 1-0 loss to HSV and a 2-1 defeat in Bremen followed.
  • With just 18 points after 21 games, VfB are having the worst season in their Bundesliga history. They even had one point more on the board in the 1974/75 campaign, which ended in relegation (converted to the 3-points-per-win system).
  • Stuttgart had never scored as few as 21 goals after 21 BL games before.
  • Vedad Ibisevic, who could make his 200th BL appearance in the game against Dortmund, has gone 1,194 minutes without scoring in the top flight. He last found the back of the net over a year ago in VfB's 2-1 loss to Bayern on 29th January 2014.
  • Timo Werner is set to make his 50th BL appearance. At 18 years, 11 months and 14 days old, he could become the youngest player ever to reach this milestone. The current record is held by Julian Draxler (19 years and 5 days).
