Pardew looks to snap streak against Latics – Betting Preview
With only one win in eight, Newcastle are suffering their worst Premier League run in four years, and in this Monday night game host a Wigan Athletic side who, in familiar territory, find themselves needing to improve if they are to avoid the threat of relegation.
Alan Pardew was recently granted an 8 year contract, and whilst that is all well and good, since then his team have picked up a solitary win in the Premier League and amassed only six points, yet are a team that have proven last season that fluid attacking play, goals, and a solid defence is out of the question. One big problem for Newcastle this season has been the constant stream of injuries that has plagued the club, with key players such as Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye missing until the New Year.
Away from the medical room, the big issue that has haunted Newcastle this season is the lack of goals throughout the team. Last season, Senegalese pair Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse looked as though they could combine to create a fantastic partnership; however the latter has only chipped in with 4 this season. More worryingly though is the lack of threat from elsewhere in the team, with only three Magpies netting more than one goal this season, and all three are currently out injured. Due to that worrying stat, William Hill have enhanced Demba Ba's price to score in a Newcastle win to 7/4 (from 11/8).
On the injury front, Newcastle have a lot of room to complain, yet the only team who has suffered more than the Tyneside club this season is Wigan Athletic, who currently have 9 first team players on the sidelines, yet the return of James McArthur and Gary Caldwell will boost their hopes as they head to St James' Park this week. The Latics' inconsistent run has seen them only pick up 10 points from their last 30, and their away form has been poor. With only four goals on the road this season (12/5 the Newcastle win to nil), Roberto Martinez will be looking for his side to replicate the spirit that saw them steal a late victory at the DW Stadium last weekend against Reading.
The shining light for Wigan this season has been Jordi Gomez, who leads the team in goals with five, and has seen his price to score in a Wigan win enhanced to 8/1 (from 7/1). The Spaniard has impressed in build-up play as well for his side, and could play an instrumental part in their survival come May if needs be, however their Ivorian striker Arouna Kone, who has looked lively since signing from Levante (and is 15/2 to net first) will be missed as he is likely to travel to South Africa next month as Cote D'Ivoire are embroiled in a tough African Cup of Nations campaign.
