Premier League Opta Facts - 15-17 December

Newcastle United v Manchester City

  • There have been four penalties in the last six Premier League meetings between City and Newcastle, all to the Citizens.
  • Dan Gosling has scored in both of his Premier League appearances against Man City.
  • Carlos Tevez has netted four goals in six Premier League games against the Magpies.
  • Demba Ba has scored five goals in his last six Premier League appearances at St James Park.
  • Man City have scored six goals in their last five Premier League away matches and four of those have been netted by substitutes.
  • City are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League away games (W6 D4 L0), conceded just six goals and kept five clean sheets in that run.
  • Manchester City have won nine and lost none (D2) of the last 11 Premier League games against Newcastle.
  • City's opening league defeat of this season came last weekend, ending a run of 21 successive Premier League games without a loss (W15 D6 before the defeat).
  • A third (33%) of Newcastle's goals this season have come in the 15 minutes after half-time, a higher % than any other side.
  • Newcastle have 10 points fewer than they did at this point last season. Man City have eight points fewer than they did at this point in 2011-12.

 

Liverpool v Aston Villa

  • Aston Villa have won just one of their last 16 Premier League away matches (W1 D6 L9), scoring just seven goals in that run.
  • The Villans have won just one of their last 10 Premier League trips to Anfield (W1 D3 L6).
  • This will be the fourth Premier League meeting in a row at Anfield between Liverpool & Villa where both sides will have different managers in the dugout. (Benitez v O'Neill, Hodgson v Houllier, Dalglish v McLeish and now Rodgers v Lambert).
  • Liverpool have won three of their last four Premier League home games (W3 D1 L0) after winning just three of the previous 15.
  • The Reds have kept four clean sheets in their last five league matches at Anfield, conceding just one goal in the other game.
  • Steven Gerrard has scored nine goals against Aston Villa, more than versus any other opponent in his Premier League career.
  • The last player to score a winning goal for Aston Villa against Liverpool was Stewart Downing in May 2011 in his final appearance before he signed for Liverpool. Since then he has played 43 PL games without scoring for the Reds.
  • All three of Joe Cole's Premier League goals for Liverpool have come as a substitute.

Manchester United v Sunderland

  • Sunderland have failed to score in nine of their last 11 Premier League games against Manchester United including the last five in a row.
  • Robin van Persie has scored seven goals in nine appearances against Sunderland in all competitions and five times in seven games in the Premier League. Six of his goals have come in three braces.
  • In the last six Premier League meetings between these two sides, Man Utd have only scored seven goals and three have been own goals by Sunderland players - courtesy of Anton Ferdinand (2) and Wes Brown.
  • The Red Devils have won 15 and lost none of the last 20 Premier League meetings with the Black Cats.
  • Manchester United have won 14 and lost just one of their last 16 Premier League games at Old Trafford.
  • Only Arsene Wenger and Gerard Houllier have orchestrated more Premier League wins at Old Trafford in the Premier League than Martin O'Neill (2). O'Neill is also the only manager ever to win there with two different teams.
  • Sunderland have won just one of their last 15 Premier League away games (W1 D7 L7).

Norwich City v Wigan Athletic

  • Three of the four league meetings between Norwich and Wigan have ended as 1-1 draws, including both times they have played each other in the Premier League.
  • Wes Hoolahan scored a first half goal in both league meetings against the Latics last season.
  • Wigan have scored just two goals in their last six Premier League away trips.
  • Norwich have lost just one of their last eight Premier League games at Carrow Road (W5 D2 L1) including winning the last four in a row.
  • In that eight game run, the Canaries have kept five clean sheets and although they have conceded seven goals, five of those came in one game (against Liverpool).
  • All of Norwich's last four wins at Carrow Road have been by a one-goal margin and Chris Hughton's side have only scored eight goals in their last seven matches on home soil.
  • Norwich are unbeaten in their last nine league games. They last went on a longer run within a single top-flight season in March 1987 (15 games).
  • Wigan have conceded two or more goals in each of their last six Premier League games.
  • Athletic's last two Premier League away games have ended in 3-0 reverses.
  • Sébastien Bassong has now scored three goals in four PL apps after only bagging two in his previous 94 PL appearances.

 

Queens Park Rangers v Fulham

  • QPR have won none of their last seven Premier League matches at Loftus Road (L3 D4).
  • Rangers have scored just seven goals in their last nine Premier League home games and not more than once in a match in that run.
  • Fulham inflicted QPR's biggest ever Premier League defeat when they thrashed the R's 6-0 at Craven Cottage last season.
  • The Whites have won just one of their last nine Premier League away games (W1 D4 L4), but have drawn four of the last five.
  • Fulham have won five and lost none of the last six meetings with QPR and Rangers have failed to score in all six games.
  • Only three sides have won seven points or fewer from their opening 16 Premier League games in a single season before QPR this term - all three of those have been relegated at the end of that campaign.
  • Fulham have won none of their last six Premier League London derbies (W0 D3 L3) since beating QPR last February and QPR have won none of their last five (W0 D1 L4).
  • If QPR don't win this game they will become the first top-flight team to fail to win any of their opening 17 games since Bolton in 1902-03.

  • Phil Jagielka has twice scored an own goal in Premier League games at the Britannia Stadium while playing for Everton.
  • The Toffees have only picked up five yellow cards in eight Premier League games against Stoke City and never more than one in a single match.
  • Everton have drawn eight of their last 12 Premier League (W2 D8 L2) away games and four of the last five (W0 D4 L1).
  • Stoke are unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League games at the Britannia Stadium (W7 D7 L0), their best such run in the top-flight since November 1974 (23 games unbeaten).
  • The Potters have conceded just two goals in their last seven Premier League home matches.
  • Marouane Fellaini has scored five goals in his last seven Premier League games for Everton away from home.
  • Darron Gibson has played 48 times in the Premier League and has only been on the losing side four times.

Tottenham Hotspur v Swansea City

  • Tottenham have won 12 and lost none of their 14 league meetings at home against Swansea.
  • Spurs have kept just one clean sheet in eight Premier League games under Andre Villas Boas at White Hart Lane.
  • Swansea have won three of their last five Premier League games in London, including last time out at Arsenal.
  • Michu has scored five of Swansea's 10 Premier League goals netted away from home this season.
  • Swansea's scorer at White Hart Lane last season was Gylfi Sigurdsson who scored seven goals in 18 Premier League games for the Welsh side before joining Spurs in the summer.
  • If games had lasted 80 minutes this season then Spurs would be top of the table.
  • Michu has scored five headed goals this season, more than any other player in the Premier League.
  • Tottenham's total of 25 goals conceded in their opening 16 games is their third highest total at this stage of a Premier League season.
  • Both teams have scored in five of Tottenham's last six games.

West Bromwich Albion v West Ham United

  • There have been three penalties awarded in the last four Premier League meetings between West Brom and West Ham.
  • The last three Premier League meetings between the Hammers and the Baggies have ended as draws.
  • West Ham have only won two of their last 13 Premier League away fixtures (W2 D3 L8).
  • The Hammers have only managed five goals in their seven Premier League matches on the road since returning to the top flight.
  • West Brom have kept seven clean sheets in their last 12 Premier League home matches, but just one in the last five.
  • The last time these two sides met was in February 2011 at the Hawthorns and the Baggies were 3-0 up at half-time, only for the Hammers to earn a 3-3 draw with a great second half comeback.
  • West Brom have mustered just one point from a losing position this season, a joint-league-low.
  • West Ham are the only Premier League side yet to concede a headed goal this season, while only Manchester United (10) have scored more headers than West Brom (eight).
  • The Hammers have fashioned the highest percentage of attempts from set pieces in the Premier League this term (40%).
  • Jussi Jääskeläinen has been forced in to making a league-high 71 saves in the Premier League this term.

 

Reading v Arsenal

  • Reading and Arsenal have met 10 times in all competitions, with the Gunners winning them all.
  • The two sides have already met once this season, in the Capital One Cup, with Reading taking a 4-0 lead, only to be pegged back to 4-4 and losing 5-7 in extra time.
  • In that match, Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick with all three goals being netted in added time at the end of the first half (45), second half (90) and extra time (120).
  • Reading have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games at the Madejski Stadium (W1 D5 L4).
  • Arsenal have won none of their last six away games in all competitions (W0 D4 L2).
  • The Royals have only managed one clean sheet in the league all season, the lowest tally of all Premier League sides.
  • Reading have thrown away more points from winning positions than any other Premier League sides this term (17).
  • Arsenal have conceded the lowest number of second-half goals in the top-flight this season (six) while Reading have shipped the joint-most (20).
