Opening Weekend

 

Arsenal v West Ham United

 

  • Arsenal have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League fixtures on the opening weekend, winning nine (D4).
  • West Ham have lost more Premier League games on the opening weekend than any other side (9).
  • Arsenal have been shown more opening day red cards than any other Premier League side (6).
  • The Gunners have won their last nine league encounters with West Ham and are unbeaten in 14 (W12 D2).
  • The Hammers won on their last trip to Highbury in 2005/06 and on their first trip to the Emirates in 2006/07 but have not won at Arsenal in the league since (D1 L6).
  • Olivier Giroud has scored five goals in five PL appearances against West Ham, with four of those strikes coming on home soil.
  • Theo Walcott has scored more top-flight goals against the Hammers than versus any other opponent (5).
  • Petr Cech has posted the best saves to shots ratio (min. 50 saves) of any goalkeeper in the Premier League over the last three seasons (78%).
  • Dimitri Payet created the most chances in the top five European leagues in 2014/15 (135).

  • After a run of four consecutive opening day fixtures at Villa Park, Aston Villa have since been on the road in their last five.
  • Bournemouth have won their last two opening day fixtures in league competition, after managing just one victory in their previous 13 (D6 L6).
  • Aston Villa have never beaten a newly promoted Premier League side on opening day (D1 L2).
  • These sides have not met in league competition since 1987/88, though Villa did beat the Cherries 2-1 in the FA Cup last season.
  • Eddie Howe's side scored 98 league goals in 2014/15; only MK Dons (101) scored more in the top four tiers.
  • Only 14 players have made more Premier League appearances than Bournemouth new boy Sylvain Distin (457).
  • Bournemouth had more shots (573) and shots on target (268) than any other Championship side last season.
  • Callum Wilson was awarded 11 penalties in 2014/15; six more than any other player for an English league side.
  • 10 of Yann Kermorgant's 15 league goals last season were the game's winning strike.

 

 

Chelsea v Swansea City

 

  • In 23 Premier League seasons, the defending champion has never lost their opening game (winning 20 and drawing three).
  • Swansea have scored as many goals in their last three season openers (8) as they did in the previous nine games combined.
  • Chelsea have won 14 and lost none of their last 16 Premier League fixtures on the opening weekend. The Blues haven't lost a season opener since 1998/99 vs Coventry City.
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in 12 opening day matches at Stamford Bridge, last losing to Blackburn in 1993 (W10 D2).
  • Swansea have lost all four Premier League trips to Stamford Bridge to date.
  • Diego Costa has scored more PL goals against Swansea than any other player (5) despite only playing twice against the Welsh side.
  • 18% of the goals conceded by Garry Monk's side in the top-flight last term came against the Blues (9/49).
  • Cesc Fabregas has reached 10 assists in five of his last six Premier League campaigns (he got eight in 22 appearances in 2008/09).
  • John Terry has never been substituted off in the Premier League by Jose Mourinho (175 starts, completed 90 minutes 174 times and been sent off once).

Everton v Watford

 

  • Everton have conceded more goals on the opening weekend than any other Premier League side (35).
  • Watford's last defeat on the opening weekend of a season was back in 2006/07 vs Everton; the last time they were in the Premier League.
  • The Toffees have won their last nine games against Watford in all competitions.
  • The four previous Premier League clashes between these teams have all seen a goal scored in the final five minutes.
  • New Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores has taken charge of 197 top-flight games in Spain, winning 89 (D40 L68).
  • This will be the sixth Premier League game between two Spanish managers and Roberto Martinez has appeared in five of them (v Rafa Benitez three times, Pepe Mel once and Quique Sanchez Flores once, the other was Benitez v Juande Ramos).
  • Watford were one of only two teams (along with Blackburn) in the top four tiers to see two players reach 20 goals last season (Ighalo and Deeney).
  • Ighalo scored with 20 of his 36 shots on target in the Championship last term.
  • Hornets keeper Heurelho Gomes made 62 punches in the second tier last season; 12 more than any other stopper.

Leicester City v Sunderland

 

  • The Foxes have scored exactly two goals in six of their last seven matches on the opening day, including in the PL last term vs Everton.
  • The last Sunderland manager to win a PL game on the opening weekend was Steve Bruce v Bolton in 2009/10 (D4 L1 since).
  • Both meetings between these sides last season ended goalless.
  • The Black Cats are unbeaten in three trips to Leicester (W2 D1), keeping three clean sheets in the process, and are unbeaten in seven overall (W4 D3).
  • Leicester have not beaten Sunderland since November 2001, when Ade Akinbiyi scored the game's only goal.
  • From the start of April until the end of last season, Leicester won more points than any other Premier League side (22).
  • The Foxes have won five and lost just one of their last six league games at the King Power Stadium.
  • Jamie Vardy has four goals and four assists in his last 10 league appearances.
  • Dick Advocaat currently has the best win percentage of anyone to manage Sunderland in the Premier League (33.3%).
  • Leicester new signing Shinji Okazaki scored 27 Bundesliga goals over two seasons with FSV Mainz but only eight of them came on home soil.

 

 

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur

 

  • Manchester United's defeat to Swansea at Old Trafford last season was the first time since 1972/73 that they've lost at home on the opening weekend.
  • Harry Kane won his team 24 points with his goals last season, more than any other player.
  • Wayne Rooney has scored more goals on the opening weekend than any other current Premier League player (6).
  • Tottenham had the youngest average starting eleven in the top-flight last season (24 years and 281 days).
  • Manchester United are the only team to lose on the opening weekend but go on to win the title (did so in 1992/93, 1995/96 and 2012/13).
  • Spurs had gone five PL games unbeaten against the Red Devils (W2 D3) before losing 0-3 at Old Trafford in March.
  • Despite losing 18 of 23 trips to Old Trafford since 1992/93 (W2 D3), Tottenham have won at the venue in two of the last three seasons.
  • Wayne Rooney has scored 10 goals in 15 league appearances for Man Utd against Spurs.
  • Memphis Depay scored seven direct free kick goals last season; more than any other player in the top five European leagues or the Eredivisie.
  • New Tottenham signing Kieran Trippier made more open play crosses than any other Premier League player last season (234).

 

 

Newcastle United v Southampton

 

  • Newcastle have failed to score in four of their last five opening weekend PL fixtures, though they've faced Man City (twice), Arsenal, Man Utd and Tottenham (scored twice) in that run.
  • Saints have been drawn away from home in each of their last six season openers in the Premier League, winning just one of the previous five (D1 L3).
  • Southampton have won their last three league games against Newcastle, scoring 10 and conceding just one.
  • A Southampton player has scored a brace in each of these three wins (Elia and Pelle last season, Rodriguez in 2014).
  • The Magpies have only managed one clean sheet in their last 16 top-flight clashes against the side from Hampshire.
  • On the other hand, Newcastle have scored in 14 of their 15 Premier League home games against Saints, drawing a blank in a 0-1 defeat in 1997.
  • Newcastle had lost nine and won none of their 10 Premier League games before a 2-0 win over West Ham on the final day of last season that secured safety.
  • The team from Tyneside have not won consecutive league games since November 2014.
  • Saints kept 13 clean sheets in 30 league games when Fraser Forster started last season but just one in eight when he didn't.
  • Steve McClaren has only won one of his last seven PL games (D2 L4) while his Derby side won just two of their last 13 Championship games last season (D6 L5).

 

 

Norwich City v Crystal Palace

 

  • Norwich City are winless in their last 12 opening day matches in league competition (D6 L6).
  • The Eagles have lost their last four season openers.
  • The Canaries have scored exactly once in 10 of their last 12 league games against Palace, failing to score in each of the other two.
  • Palace have only lost two of their last seven visits to Carrow Road, winning three of their last five.
  • No Championship midfielder scored more goals last term than Bradley Johnson (15) - level with Matt Ritchie and Bakary Sako.
  • Nathan Redmond attempted 169 dribbles in 2014/15 (excluding play-offs) and beat his man 99 times (59%).
  • Norwich faced fewer opposition shots than any other team in the regular Championship season last term (439).
  • If last season's Premier League had started when Alan Pardew took over at Crystal Palace, the Eagles would have finished sixth.
  • Indeed Norwich won 68% of their regular season league games under Alex Neil last term; they won 42% under Neil Adams before him.
  • Crystal Palace had the fewest direct free kick attempts in the Premier League last season (13) but scored the joint-most (4, level with Tottenham).

 

 

Stoke City v Liverpool

 

  • Stoke v Liverpool will be the first fixture in Premier League history to be played in consecutive games at the same venue.
  • Liverpool's 6-1 defeat in this fixture on the final day of 2014/15 saw them concede six times in the league for the first time since 1963 (2-7 v Spurs).
  • Liverpool have only drawn a blank three times on the opening weekend of a Premier League campaign (92/93, 05/06, 12/13).
  • Stoke have won just once on the opening weekend of a Premier League season - 2009/10 vs Burnley.
  • Liverpool have been shown more yellow cards on the opening weekend than any other team in Premier League history (44).
  • Stoke have scored 21 goals from outside the box in two PL seasons under Mark Hughes; they scored 13 in five under Tony Pulis.
  • The Reds have only won one of seven Premier League games at the Britannia (D2 L4), winning 5-3 in 2013/14.
  • Roberto Firmino has recorded 21 assists over the last two seasons, more than any other Brazilian in the top 5 European leagues.
  • If only English goals counted, Liverpool would have finished top of the Premier League last season on 71 points, nine ahead of Crystal Palace and Tottenham.
  • The Potters have scored in their last 11 home league games; only Chelsea (19) can boast a longer current run.

 

 

West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City

 

  • West Brom have kept 10 clean sheets in 18 league games under Tony Pulis.
  • The Citizens have won five of their last six season openers in the Premier League (D1).
  • The Baggies' last five season openers have all been played at the Hawthorns, with their only win in this run arriving against Liverpool back in 2012/13 (D1 L2).
  • Both of Fernando's two Premier League goals and one of his two assists have come against West Brom, the other assist also came in Birmingham at Villa Park.
  • David Silva has scored in three of his last four appearances against the Baggies.
  • The Citizens have won four of their last five Premier League visits to the Hawthorns (D1).
  • The eventual Premier League title winning team has started their season on Monday night in each of the past five seasons.
  • Manuel Pellegrini's side finished the 2014/15 campaign with six successive wins.
  • West Brom scored the most headed goals in the Premier League last season (16).
