Serie A Facts Matchday 9 – Serie A 2013/14


Bologna - Livorno


  • Bologna have won 14 of their 28 Serie A meetings against Livorno, leaving only seven wins to the Tuscans.
  • Livorno have won only once at Bologna so far in Serie A (2-1 in November 1942).
  • Bologna are unbeaten in their last three league games against Livorno (W2, D1), keeping three clean sheets in the process.
  • Bologna are winless in their last nine Serie A fixtures at home (D5, L4).
  • Overall, Bologna have won only one of their last 18 league games, losing the last three.
  • Bologna have collected only three points so far in this campaign, their worst total after eight match-days in Serie A.
  • Livorno have lost their last three league games, conceding eight goals after they had shipped only four in their previous five games.
  • Bologna are the only side yet to score in the opening and closing 15 minutes of play in Serie A.
  • Alessandro Diamanti will face his former team for the first time - he played for Livorno between 2007 and 2009, collecting 27 Serie A appearances and scoring four goals.



Catania - Sassuolo


  • This will be the first Serie A encounter between Catania and Sassuolo.
  • Last Sunday, Sassuolo recorded their first ever win in Serie A (2-1 vs Bologna).
  • Catania have a record of five losses, two draws and only one win so far in this campaign - this is their worst start to a Serie A season since 1965-66, when they were relegated to Serie B.
  • However, Catania have lost only one of their last nine home games, winning four (D4).
  • Sassuolo have picked up only one point from their four games away from home this season, conceding on average two goals per game.
  • Catania have scored only two goals in the second half - only Chievo (1) have netted fewer.
  • Sassuolo not only have the worst defence of this Serie A, but they've also conceded the most goals after the break (13).
  • Sassuolo have scored only with players affiliated for Italy, while Catania are yet to score their first goal with Italian players.
  • Luigi De Canio will make his debut as Catania's manager - his record in the top-flight is 62 wins, 54 draws and 87 losses.



Chievo - Fiorentina


  • This will be the 19th Serie A meeting between Chievo and Fiorentina: the Viola lead by 11 wins to five, with two draws.
  • Fiorentina lead by five wins to two at Chievo's ground, failing to score only once in nine visits to the Bentegodi against the Gialloblu.
  • Against Fiorentina, Chievo played and won their very first Serie A game (2-0 at the Franchi in August 2001).
  • There have been no goalless draws so far in Serie A between these two sides.
  • Chievo have picked up only four points after the first eight match-days - this is their worst start since 2006/07, when they were relegated to Serie B.
  • Chievo have scored only one goal in the second half so far - fewer than any other side in this campaign.
  • Vincenzo Montella's side instead have scored 11 of their last 12 goals after the break.
  • The Viola have already scored 17 goals, the last time they had netted more after eight rounds in Serie A was in 2005-06.
  • Only Roma (22%) have had a better goal to shot ratio than Fiorentina (21.8%) so far this term in Serie A.



Inter - Verona


  • Inter have won seven of their last eight league meetings against Verona, including the last three, drawing the other match.
  • Verona have managed just one win in the last 17 Serie A clashes against Inter in the top-flight, which came back in February 1992.
  • Inter are unbeaten against Verona at the San Siro in the league (W14, D10).
  • These two sides have drawn 18 times in the top flight (including 12 nil-nil), a record for the Gialloblu against a Serie A side.
  • Walter Mazzarri's side have conceded eight goals over their last four league games, after they had conceded only one in the previous four.
  • Only once in their history have Verona scored more than 16 goals after the first eight match-days (17 in 1983/84).
  • Verona are on a run of three consecutive wins - last time they did this was in June 2001.
  • Verona haven't scored three goals in back to back games in Serie A since March 1985 (vs Fiorentina and Cremonese).
  • Last Sunday against Torino, Rodrigo Palacio scored his 10th Serie A brace - only Di Natale (16), Totti and Cavani (12) have scored more since "El Trenza" arrived in Italy.
  • Inter have featured only 16 different players in their starting lineups so far - fewer than any other side.



Juventus - Genoa


  • Three of the last four meetings between Juventus and Genoa in Serie A have ended in a draw.
  • However, Juventus are unbeaten in their last eight meetings against the Grifoni.
  • Genoa have managed to beat Juventus only once in their last 19 meetings since 1992 (3-2 at the Ferraris back in April 2009).
  • Against Juventus, Genoa have lost the most Serie A games (54) and conceded the most goals (193).
  • Juventus have failed to score only once in their last 20 clashes against Genoa, a 0-0 back in March 2012.
  • Genoa have won only two of their 46 Serie A games played at Juve's ground (in 1937 and 1991). However, both previous meetings at the Juventus Stadium have ended in a draw.
  • Juventus have already conceded 10 goals this term - last time they conceded so many in eight games was in 1992/93.
  • Last Sunday against Fiorentina, Juventus conceded four goals in a Serie A game for the first time since January 2011.
  • However, Juventus remain the team that gained the most points from losing positions in this Serie A (10).
  • Both of Paul Pogba's two goals in this campaign have been scored away from home, while last season he had netted five all at the Juventus Stadium.



Lazio - Cagliari


  • Lazio and Cagliari have met 56 times in Serie A: the Biancocelesti lead by 25 wins to 17.
  • These two teams haven't drawn any of their last 13 Serie A meetings, with Lazio leading by eight wins to five in the process.
  • The Biancocelesti have won their last three home matches against the Sardinians in the league.
  • Lazio are still unbeaten at the Olimpico this season (W3, D1) - a streak of six games if we also include last season.
  • The Sardinians haven't won any of their last 10 games on the road, failing to score in five of these.
  • Lazio have already conceded 12 goals this season, their worst record after eight match-days since 1992/93.
  • Currently there is a gap of 13 points between Lazio and Roma - only in 1960/61 the distance in the table between these two sides had been larger (17 points), if we consider the three points for a win.
  • Cagliari have recouped nine points from trailing situations, only Juventus have more (10).
  • The Sardinians are yet to keep a clean sheet in this Serie A campaign.
  • Sergio Floccari, who is yet to score his first goal in this campaign, has already netted five goals against Cagliari in Serie A - only against Napoli (6) has he bagged more.



Napoli - Torino


  • Napoli won their last Serie A clash against Torino (5-3 last March), priviously the Granata had remained unbeaten in five consecutive matches against the Azzurri (W3, D2).
  • Napoli have managed to win only one of their last eight home games versus Torino in the top-flight.
  • Five of the last seven Serie A encounters between these two sides played at the San Paolo have ended in a draw.
  • Napoli have drawn more games against Torino (51), than against any other Serie A opponent.
  • Napoli lost their last game against Roma - the last time they lost two league games in a row was in December.
  • Napoli have won eight of their last nine Serie A matches at the San Paolo, scoring on average 2.6 goals per game.
  • Goran Pandev has bagged four goals in his last eight league appearances against Torino, but none in the last three.
  • Blerim Dzemaili scored a hat-trick in his last game against Torino back in March. Indeed, Dzemaili has scored more goals against the Granata (3), than any other Serie A team.



Parma - AC Milan


  • Parma have won only one of their last 18 Serie A encounters against AC Milan.
  • The Gialloblu have picked-up just a point from their last six encounters against the Rossoneri.
  • AC Milan have scored 2.6 goals per game on average in their last five clashes with the Ducali.
  • Parma have scored and conceded goals in each of their last four league games (20 in total).
  • Parma lost their last league game against Verona, ending a run of two wins and two draws.
  • Both Amauri and Cassano have scored four goals against AC Milan. Indeed, Cassano played 33 Serie A games with the AC Milan shirt between 2011 and 2012, scoring seven goals and making 16 assists.
  • Cassano has been involved in four of Parma's last five goals (two goals and two assists).
  • Parma are one of Ricardo Kaká's favourite opponents in Serie A: the former Real Madrid man has already netted five goals against the Gialloblu.
  • Valter Birsa scored two goals in his last two league appearances for AC Milan, as many as he had netted in the previous 29.



Sampdoria - Atalanta


  • These two teams have won three times each and drawn once over their last seven Serie A meetings.
  • However, Atalanta have failed to score in four of their last five league games against Sampdoria.
  • These two sides haven't drawn over their last 14 clashes at the Marassi: the Blucerchiati lead by nine wins to five.
  • Since 1975, only once have Sampdoria won only one of their first eight games of the season - in 2008/09 when they finished 13th in the table.
  • Atalanta have won their last three Serie A games, after they had lost all of the previous three.
  • Atalanta have also won the last away game, after losing five in a row on the road.
  • Atalanta and Sampdoria are yet to score in the opening 15 minutes of play this season.
  • Sampdoria's last three goals have been scored from the penalty spot (two by Eder, one by Pozzi).



Udinese - Roma


  • These two teams have met 78 times in the top-flight: the Giallorossi lead by 35 wins to 20, with 23 draws.
  • The last five Serie A meetings have seen two successes apiece and a draw.
  • Roma have failed to score at the Friuli only once in their last 16 away games vs Udinese (2-0 defeat back to November 2011).
  • Udinese have already lost four games in this campaign - last time they lost five of their first nine games of the season was in 1993/94.
  • However, Udinese are unbeaten at the Friuli since September 2012, when they lost against Juventus.
  • Roma kept their 100% record after eight match-days, and have conceded only one goal so far: they are the first team to do so in Serie A history.
  • Roma are the only side with a 100% over the top-5 European leagues.
  • The Giallorossi are unbeaten in their last seven league games on the road (six wins), keeping five clean sheets in the process.
  • Antonio Di Natale has scored 13 goals in Serie A against Roma (11 since playing for Udinese), the Friulani are his favourite opponent in the top-flight.
  • Francesco Totti has also scored 13 goals against Udinese in Serie A, including four braces.
