Villa can pummel poor Pompey

After Portsmouth's humiliation against Swansea, Tony Adams will be hoping they can get their season back on track and upset odds of 21/10 to beat Aston Villa.

Martin O'Neill's side have not lost in the Premier League since early November and they are worthy favourites at 13/10 with the draw at 23/10 in the betting.

If Pompey are to get anything out of the game they need to start scoring goals and fast.

They have not yet shown that they won't miss Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch while a very capable goal scorer needs better support. The lanky striker is 7/1 to score the first goal.

He will most likely be partnered by Nwankwo Kanu who did manage to spice up the Portsmouth attack when he came on against Swansea and he will most likely be preferred to Dave Nugent. The pair are both 8/1 in the betting to score first.

The home fans will be hoping their new signings have an impact. Jermaine Pennant could add some pace and creativity from the wing and is 11/2 to score anytime while Hayden Mullins should come straight in and help shore things up at the back.

Aston Villa do have some slight concerns. John Carew is still out, Ashley Young is suspended and it is unclear yet as to whether Gabriel Agbonlahor will start after limping off last week. Should he start the 'Gabby' is available at odds of 6/1 to score first.

Emile Heskey will go straight into the side and provide excellent support up front. Heskey isn't known for his great goal scoring record but will be looking to impress early on and is 7/1 to delight the fans by scoring first on his debut.

James Milner and Gareth Barry have been excellent all season and chipped in with more than their fair share of goals from midfield.

The pair are 10/1 and 12/1 respectively to score first while Barry at 5/1 to score anytime appeals as he has set piece responsibilities with Milner at 7/2 to get on the score sheet.

Statistics say we should see goals in this match as Portsmouth have seen over two goals in 7/9 home matches while Villa have seen over two goals in 5/7 away matches.

This suggests an investment on Villa to win 2-1 at 9/1 or 3-1 at 18/1 could be call. If you think this will go in Portsmouth's favour then 2-1 is available at odds of 11/1 while if this goes against the trend then perhaps Pompey can nick the game with 1-0 at 7/1.

A scoring draw is possible with 1-1 at 11/2 in the betting and 2-2 available at odds of 12/1.

For the double result, it is interesting to note that in every game so far that Villa have scored first they have won so if they can bag the first goal then Villa halftime/full time looks a cracking bet at 13/5.

Should Pompey draw first blood however life will be tougher for The Villans but they carry a constant threat which would favour Portsmouth halftime/draw full time at 14/1 or if you think they won't be separated draw/draw is 9/2 in the betting.

This should be an enthralling game as Adams could get the chop at any moment while Villa could go top of the league if they win and other results go their way.

Heskey looks to be a good signing and while Pompey may scrape a draw the plucky Villans should be able to overcome a team truly in turmoil.

James Milner to score anytime - 7/2
Aston Villa to win 3-1 - 18/1
