Calcavecchia strives for Shootout success
Mark Calcavecchia will be wanting to join the illustrious list of three-time winners by repeating last season's victory in the 2008 Merrill Lynch Shootout.
Pairing up again with Woody Austin he can join the likes of Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Brad Faxon and Scott McCarron and appear three times on the Merrill Lynch Shootout trophy. Odds of 8/1 say they can repeat the success they enjoyed last year.
The Merrill Lynch Shootout features 12 two-man teams playing three rounds from the 12th to the 14th December 2008. Read more about the tournament and its unique format.
Favourites in the betting are the debutant pairing of Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter at 9/2, the price reflecting Poulter's good season including great team performances in the Ryder Cup and Omega Mission Hills World Cup.
JB Holmes and Boo Weekley are at 11/2, and third favourite is the pairing of Zach Johnson and Scott Verplank at 13/2.
Joining the current holders at 8/1 in the betting are Fred Couples and Stewart Cink with some 15 appearances between them, including three wins by Couples. At the same price are Steve Stricker and 2006 winner Jerry Kelly. The tournament host, Greg Norman, with partner Camilo Villegas, can also be backed at 8/1.
Propping up the betting, both at 16/1, are two partnerships hoping to rekindle the form of years gone by. Jeff Sluman won the Merrill Lynch Shootout back-to-back in 2003 and 2004 with Hank Kuehne and will play with Nick Price who is making his seventh appearance. The pairing of Brad Faxon and Scott McCarron also won consecutive Shootouts in 2000 and 2001 and have each won a third time with different partners. With 23 appearances between them they look a good outside bet.
