It's the final tournament on the PGA Tour for the autumn season and this week at Lake Buena Vista in Florida will be as important for the struggling golfers in the field as it will be for Money List top spot rivals Luke Donald and Webb Simpson.
The 2010 event is a prime example of this, defending champion Robert Garrigus came into the tournament ranked 179th on the 2010 money list and was in extreme danger of not retaining his Tour card. However with the pressure on the Idaho native made up five strokes on the final day shooting a closing round of 64 to take the title and secure his 2011 card, and avoided the dreaded task of competing in the six rounds of qualifying school that takes place in November.
This will a similar situation for a few in the field, so expect a couple of the outsiders this week to put in some personal best performances as they will be fully concentrated on ever shot, as their careers depend upon it. The first player to mention in this bracket is Matt Jones (200/1). The Australian has a great opportunity to secure his 2012 Tour card. After posting a 65 in the first round at the McGladrey Classic last week he followed this up with a 75 which saw him miss the weekend. The result of that disastrous second round was failing to make to the cut and he moved down the money list from the all important 125th place to 129th. He goes into the event knowing that he has to make the weekend and 10/1 on him being the top Australian player could be worth a look!
Another Australian in a precarious position is Steven Bowditch (250/1). Having also missed the cut at the McGladrey he dropped to 135th in the money list and will need to produce some magic if he is to preserve hi spot on next year's tour. The signs are that Jones has more of a chance however, 12/1 could be backed for Bowditch to be top Australian as well.
Although interesting and arguably more important, the real story this weekend will be the battle between World Number One Luke Donald 8/1 and the man of the moment Webb Simpson 10/1. Simpson lost out in a play-off to Ben Crane at the McGladrey when he missed a sitter and three putted on the 2nd play-off hole. Although disappointed Simpson took a runners-up cheque of $422,000 taking his year's earnings to $6.2 million and giving him a $363,029 lead over his rival.
The winner at Lake Buena Vista will take home $846,000 so Luke Donald will have to be up there and hope that Webb Simpson is somewhere outside the Top Ten. That could be wishful thinking, Simpson has been in great form winning in Boston as well as the event before the play-offs, not to mention his recent runner-up performance, whereas Donald has been distracted by the imminent arrival of his second child. Donald has already secured top-spot in the European money list however he is 11/2 to win top the US list and with Simpson at 1/10 is easy to see how the bookies rate the Englishman's chances.
