MISSED-CUT OPEN STARS TEE-CH HILLS £500,000 LESSON!
WILLIAM HILL have refunded at least £500,000 of Open golf bets after their pledge to give customers betting on a player who missed the cut by up to three shots, a free bet of the same amount on their choice for the outright winner of the event.
'Having decided to take on high profile players like McIlroy, Donald and Westwood by offering them at the top price available pre-tournament we duly acquired £1million+ liabilities on them and were therefore delighted when they made indifferent starts.' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe,
'But when Donald and Westwood then went on to miss the cut along with other well fancied contenders like McDowell and Harrington, they triggered our concession of a free bet refund of up to £50 per customer per player on outright bets struck before midnight on the first day of play on players who missed the cut by up to three shots.'
'In all, we refunded at least £500,000 which we believe is easily the biggest golf bet concession ever, is definitely our biggest sporting bet concession ever, and quite possibly anybody's biggest sporting bet concession ever.'
Twenty nine players missed the cut by up to three shots.
As our Trading Director, Terry Pattinson, commented, 'We got it right taking on the big guns - but maybe we got it TOO right - we certainly didn't expect the likes of Donald and Westy to miss the cut!'' added Sharpe, before saying;
'We will certainly have to give a lot of thought to whether to repeat this concession next year!'
