Ryder Cup - Team USA Profiles

Team USA have arrived in Wales ahead of the Ryder Cup clash at Celtic Manor on Friday. They come in as underdogs but still have plenty of players capable of playing great golf. Here are the profiles of the men looking to retain the Ryder Cup.


Corey Pavin

US Captain Corey Pavin is a veteran of three Ryder Cup campaigns winning in 1991 and 1993 before losing in his last appearance in 1995.

He has one major victory to his name winning the US Open in 1995 by two strokes from Greg Norman.

The 50 year old from California has been a professional for 28 years and is currently playing on the Champions Tour, recently losing out to Bubba Watson in the Travelers Championship in a play-off.

He has banned all his players from twitter for the duration of the event in an attempt to avoid any distractions.

Phil Mickelson

This is Phil Mickelson's 8th consecutive appearance in the Ryder Cup dating back to his debut in 1995. He has been on the winning side just twice during that time.

He has 38 PGA Tour titles to his name including four majors. His most recent win was in this year's Masters beating Lee Westwood by three strokes.

Despite being right handed he swings with his left hand after mirroring the actions of his right handed father earning him the nickname 'lefty'.

Hunter Mahan

Hunter Mahan could be a good bet for top US points scorer at 10/1. The 28 year old score 3.5 points from five matches at Valhalla in 2008 to help his team to victory.

He has three PGA Tour victories to his name, winning the Bridgestone Invitational in August.

Bubba Watson

Bubba Watson makes his Ryder Cup debut after qualifying with some great form in the last year. He won the Travelers Championship in June and finished a creditable 2nd in the PGA Championship in August losing out to Martin Kaymer in a play-off.

Jim Furyk

Jim Furyk will be hoping to improve on his indifferent Ryder Cup record this week having lost 13 of his 24 matches.

The 2003 US Open champion ended a two year wait for a PGA victory winning three events this year to ensure his automatic place in the team.

Furyk is known for his unconventional swing. Despite the different style he manages to perform at the top level and earned the nickname "The Grinder".

Steve Stricker

Despite the USA securing victory back in 2008 Steve Stricker only managed ½ a point from his three matches.

Stricker is ranked as fourth in the World and although he has never won a major is one of the most consistent performers on tour. He is known for an exceptional putting touch along with his simple and smooth stroke.

His most recent win was at the John Deere Classic in July.

'Steve Stricken' special - 10/1 to score 0 tournament points

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson will come into his Ryder Cup debut full of confidence after winning the BMW Championship just two weeks ago, beating Paul Casey by a single shot.

That win was a good comeback for Johnson after the disappointment he will have suffered in In the final round of the PGA Championship.  Johnson held a one-shot lead entering the final hole. He bogeyed the hole, which would have tied him for first and entered him into a playoff .However, he received a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a bunker, ending his hopes of winning.

Jeff Overton

One of four rookies in the USA squad, Jeff Overton joins Rickie Fowler as the first two players in Ryder Cup history to make the US team without having won a PGA Tour event.

He is ranked at 46 in the world but managed to qualify after finishing 11th at the Open Championship, a tournament which provides double Ryder Cup qualification points.

Matt Kuchar

Matt Kuchar won The Barclays in August following a play-off to secure his place in the Ryder Cup.

His record in the majors is less than impressive, failing to gain a top five finish in his career to date. The 32 year old from Florida is making his Ryder Cup debut and is 11/4 to be the top US Rookie

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods' well documented personal problems meant he dropped out of the automatic places for Ryder Cup selection after a self imposed absence and a loss of form. There were some signs of a return to somewhere near his best when finishing 11th at Deutsche Bank Championship and 12th at The Barclays.

He remains  the most talked about player in the game and if he plays to his best could help the USA to victory.

Stewart Cink

2009 Open Champion Stewart Cink has played in the last four Ryder Cups and earned the captain's pick for Celtic Manor after failing to qualify automatically.

Cink is the most popular professional golfer on twitter with over a million followers. He is sure to be disappointed by Corey Pavin's ban on tweeting during the event.

Zach Johnson

Zach Johnson has one Ryder Cup appearance to his name, playing in his side's 2006 defeat at the K Club in Ireland. He managed 1.5 points from his four matches and will be looking to improve on that this week.

The 2007 Masters Champion has one victory in 2010, taking the Crowne Plaza Invitational in May where he shot a tournament-record 21-under 259.

Last year Johnson had nine top 10 finishes and reached No. 1 on the money list but has not been as prolific in 2010 relying on a wildcard to take his place in the team.

Rickie Fowler

Possibly the most controversial pick for the US team was Rickie Fowler. He has yet to win a PGA Tour event although he does have two runner-up finishes and over $2.3 million in earnings. He has also represented the US Team in the 2009 Walker Cup, going undefeated in four matches.
