The US PGA Championship

The PGA Championship (or the US PGA Championship outside of America) is the final Major of the season which has landed the tournament the nickname of "Glory's last shot".

Up until 1958 the tournament undertook a match play format. The tournament changed to a more traditional stroke play format after pressure from broadcasting companies who preferred to have a large group of well-known golfers still playing on the final day.

The PGA Championship is the only Major that does not invite leading amateurs to enter the tournament. There are 20 places for club professionals who compete in the Club Pro Championship to see if they can secure a place in the final 156 strong line-up

This year's tournament will be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Minnesota. The last time the tournament was held here Rich Beem played a stunning last nine holes of golf to edge past Tiger Woods and take the 2002 title.

David Toms set a record for not only the PGA but for all Majors by shooting the lowest round for 72-holes with a 15-under 265 in 2001.

The PGA Championship has been largely dominated by golfers from the USA with the only recent non-American winners being Fijian Vijay Singh and last year's Irish winner Padraig Harrington.

Harrington will no doubt be lining up this year to defend his crown and win the tournament for the second time. Last year he beat Spaniard Sergio Garcia into second in a thrilling back nine with Harrington having come from behind to overtake the Spaniard in the final few holes.

The 2009 tournament will be played August 13-16 and with a purse of over $7.5 million will be perhaps the most eagerly anticipated Major of the year.
