WH Greyhound Classic and Grand Prix
North East Punters Pinpoint The Favourite For £25,000
The excitement is building up in Sunderland for the biggest Greyhound Racing competition in the North, with just a week to go until the Final of the £25,000 William Hill Classic and £15,000 William Hill Grand Prix.
The semi-finals take place this weekend, with 18 dogs taking part across three heats in the Classic and the same number contesting the Grand Prix rounds. There's also the William Hill Puppy Plate and William Hill Festival Flyer, attracting a further 36 quality greyhounds.
Favourite for the premier Northern greyhound race, the William Hill Classic, is the locally trained Pinpoint Maxi. Greyhound trainer, Kelly Macari has her dog in top shape and he's the 5-2 favourite with the sponsor to retain the title, having won the competition last year.
"Punters in the North East are really rallying behind the favourite Pinpoint Maxi for local trainer Kelly Macari. At the start of the competition he was 7-1 - now he's 5-2 - and there's a proper gamble on last year's Champion winning the race again," said William Hill's Jon Ivan-Duke.
Macari also trains 14-1 chance Mill Jolson, so she is double-handed heading in to the Classic semi-finals on Saturday night - she will be hoping that both her dogs make it through to Wednesday's Final.
William Hill's Director Of Stadia (and the man responsible for Sunderland Stadium) Joe O'Donnell said: "The competitions have attracted some of the best dogs from up and down the country, particularly the Classic - which, apart from the Derby, is the biggest race anywhere in the UK. We're confident there will be a good crowd and some fantastic greyhound races."
Admission & a racecard starts from just £6, while a full package in the restaurant including a 3-course meal costs from just £21.95. If you can't get along to watch the action live from the track, this Saturday's action is broadcast on Racing Post Greyhound TV, while Final's Night is live on Sky Sports on Wednesday 9th July.
