2013 Cheltenham Festival - To Win Any Race?
With the Cheltenham Festival now running to 27 races, there is an inevitable increase of multiple entries for many key horses.
Trainers have plenty of choice now in all categories with their runners and all too often, when asked by the press about their running plans, they use lines as ‘we'll decide at the last minute', ‘it will depend on the ground' etc.
Last season punters were in a state of confusion regarding Simonsig with Nicky Henderson publically expressing indecision over whether his star novice would run in the Supreme or the Neptune just a week before the Festival.
A year ago, William Hill introduced a ‘to win at the Festival' market and it was a resounding success with our customers. The feedback was positive and the level of business proved well above expectations.
This season we already have more than 20 horses in the list, with the high profile likes of Simonsig, Finian's Rainbow and Flemenstar heading the market.
As the campaign progresses, we will add further names to this list.
William Hill spokesman, Richard Thomas, said, "As a keen ante-post punter myself, I have suffered the frustration of backing the right horse in the wrong race at the Festival - the name Unsinkable Boxer still haunts me! This market is a perfect way of allowing William Hill customers have a variation on an insurance angle for their ante-post bets at Cheltenham and, as last season showed, its popularity proved the market to be a winner. We will look to extend the list of ‘runners' as the season goes on, allowing customers to back their favourite horses with a degree of protection."
