Bookies and punters saddle up for €60M Galway Festival
Bookies William Hill estimate Irish punters will place up to €60 million in bets on this year's Galway Festival.
The Ballybrit showpiece, which starts tomorrow, is run over seven days and bookies are hoping for a recession busting Festival.
The two feature races of the Festival are the Tote Galway Plate on Wednesday and Guinness Hurdle on Thursday.
The 8/1 favourite for the Plate is Bahrain Storm, while the controversial Eddie O'Grady-trained The Real Article is the 4/1 favourite for the Hurdle.
‘The Galway Festival is one of the jewels in the crown of Irish racing,' said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny, ‘and one of the meetings that captures the imagination of people who aren't normally interested in betting on horse racing.'
‘Dermot Weld is known as the King of Ballybrit.'
‘Punters follow him like he's the pied piper - and they'll be backing him blind this week.'
‘It's very simple, If Dermot has a good week then we won't.' said Kenny
