Flat jockeys can jump!
William Hill are delighted to confirm that they will be supporting the card at Lingfield on Tuesday 13th November.
This is the first National Hunt fixture of the season at Lingfield and features a unique contest - a handicap hurdle open only to jockeys with a flat licence!
The William Hill 'Flat Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle' will give jockeys with a taste for adventure a chance to take on 8 flights over hurdles at Lingfield.
Amongst those to have expressed an interest in this event are Jimmy Quinn, Eddie Ahern, Martin Lane, Sam Hitchcott, Fergus Sweeny, George Baker, Adam Kirby, Martin Harley and Kirsty Milczarek.
Fergus Sweeny said, "I was more interested in NH racing when I was growing up but I was lucky enough to stay light enough to ride on the flat, riding over hurdles is always something I have wanted to have a crack at and this is the perfect opportunity to have a go. I have had a couple of schooling sessions at Alan King's and getting a few pointers from Choc an all the other lads there, thanks to Lingfield for putting this unique challenge on, I am looking forward to the day."
A few of the intrepid flat pilots were at Lingfield recently to check out a hurdle!
In addition, Kirsty Milczarek has been up Brendan Powell's yard to ride out and getting in some practice schooling with champion jockey, AP McCoy.
Luke Harvey went up to film Kirsty and conducted an interview with the intrepid jockey - see link for full video http://www.lukeharvey.tv/
The William Hill supported card on Tuesday 13th November also launches the 2012/13 William Hill 'The Jumps' competition.
This is the third year of this increasingly popular Horses to Follow competition which will have a first prize this year of £100,000.
It will be open to everyone via William Hill shops from Tuesday 13th November, with the competition starting on Saturday 1st December.
Over 300,000 entries were received in the first two years, so we could easily see the total hit half a million this time around.
The William Hill 'The Jumps' runs from 1st December until the final day of the Cheltenham Festival.
Jennie Prest, sponsorship manager for William Hill, said, "William Hill love to be at the forefront of innovation and by supporting the Flat Jockeys Handicap Hurdle at Lingfield, we are backing a great initiative. It also marks the launch of our great winter competition, The Jumps. This is the third year of this retail based competition that runs through the heart of the National Hunt season, giving customers the chance to win £100,000 top prize with a £2 entry."
