Hills punter seeks 54k Gold Cup glory
It seems the early downpour has not stopped the punters coming out in droves for Royal Ascot Ladies' Day, and there's plenty of action in the markets already - with one William Hill shop having struck a £54,600 bet on Fame And Glory for the meeting's feature race, the Gold Cup.
The daring punter stands to return winnings of £136,500, with the firm facing a total payout of £190,000 should the Ballydoyle contender do the honours.
William Hill report a further £40,000 bet from a different shop in the London area, and despite the weight of money riding on the son of Montjeu, the standout price of 5-2 is still available.
After a torrid start to the week with heavily-supported winners Canford Cliffs, Power and Frederick Engels, the bookmakers hit back with defeats of hot favourites So You Think and Shumoos on the second day of the royal meeting, a day when no market leaders obliged backers.
Other popular selections today include Silverheels in the Norfolk Stakes (6-1 from 8-1), Opinion Poll in the Gold Cup (16-1 from 20-1) and Brown Panther in the finale (11-2 from 7-1).
With the draw appearing to a hold bias to the high numbers, unsurprisingly those who are set to jump from the far side have been well supported in the Britannia Stakes.
Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said ‘After a first-day thrashing, So You Think helped even the score for the bookmakers. Punters haven't lost faith in Ballydoyle however, judging by the heavy support for Fame And Glory this morning'
