Historic half a million pound bet is record winner
Two days before the Grand National, a William Hill betting shop client has staked the biggest ever bet on a hurdles race- £500,000 on Big Buck's to win the 2pm race at Aintree on Thursday afternoon.
The bet was struck at odds of 1/5 and the client made £100,000 profit as the horse cantered to a record breaking victory - becoming the first horse in racing history to win 17 consecutive hurdles races.
'It was the first half a million pound bet struck on a hurdles (jump) race as far as we are aware' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.'And it was gambled on one of the greatest horses ever to run over hurdles so it was no great surprise when the horse won easily'
The customer is a middle-aged regular at a William Hill betting shop in the south of the country. 'He guards his privacy zealously and we are not about to upset him by revealing too much about him - after all he has a considerable amount of what used to be our money, and we'd rather like the chance to win it back' added Sharpe.
'He may be tempted by the odds of 5/2 we are offering that Big Bucks will retire undefeated over hurdles.'
