The former Sir Mark Prescott trained Viva Pataca (drawn 6) quickly established himself as Hong Kong’s highest rated horse when he arrived in the former colony in 2006 and despite remaining at the top of his game he has had no luck in in the ten furlong Hong Kong Cup in the last two years.
Finishing fourth in ’06 and a staying on second to Ramonti last year in a controversial race (Frankie Dettori and Ramonti denied him a clear run), John Moore’s six year old won his last start comfortably and under Darren Beadman will carry the weight of public money to favouritism.
The main danger may well be Mike de Kock’s Eagle Mountain, runner-up to Conduit in the Breeders’ Cup Turf but remarkably never a Group One winner, whilst the Sir Michael Stoute trained Linngari has looked well in his morning work could have a respectable each-way chance again although drawn desperately in stall 12.
