Hong Kong Sprint preview
Hong Kong Sprint. Race Time 06.40am GMT Sunday 14th December
Preview by David Hood
Not since Australia’s Falvelon won the Hong Kong sprint for the second time in 2001, has a foreign challenger lifted the 6-furlong event.
But this year, the Hong Kong speedsters are not of the calibre of Silent Witness or Sacred Kingdom and therefore the mantle of market leader sits with Aussie hope Apache Cat, drawn well in stall 2, and a winner of five consecutive Group One sprints earlier in the year before a nose second to Takeover Target a fortnight ago.
Freddie Head's European champion Marchand D’or could dispute for favouritism on Sunday morning and, whilst he has conquered all in Europe, he disappointed in this race a year ago and is unaccustomed to having to run around a bend within the six furlong trip.
The best Hong Kong hope could be Sunny Power (drew 12), whilst South African runner Mythical Flight has been seen boiling over during morning track work. Brian Smart's Moorhouse Lad (runner-up to Marchand D’or at Longchamp in October) drew stall 1 and will give the market leaders a tow along for the first few furlongs.
