The UK and Ireland is well represented in the Hong Kong Vase with Ralph Becket’s Breeders Cup marathon winner Muhannak, Andrew Balding's improving Buccellati, Luca Cumani’s Purple Moon and Kevin Prendergast’s Mores Wells all holding strong chances, whilst France bids for back to back success in the twelve furlong event with the favourite Doctor Dino.
The leading local hope is Packing Winner and Peter Ho’s horse won the Champions & Chater Cup from Viva Pataca in May and comes here fresh after a short break.
He worked well under Douglas Whyte on Wednesday morning, but the vase is traditionally the most competitive of the four International races and with Australia’s Douro Valley, Japan's Jaguar Mail and South Africa’s Morilyan (under Ryan Moore) all boasting solid credentials this takes a bit of working out.
If Muhannak can transfer his all-weather form to Turf, he could round-off a red-letter year for the his trainer who also picked up the Epsom Oaks back in June, but a fierce pace would play in to the hands of stayer Purple Moon.
