The initial stage of entries for the William Hill King George VI Chase were unveiled on Wednesday afternoon with last season's champion Long Run, even-money favourite with the sponsors, spearheading a stellar field of potential contenders for the £180,000 Grade One Boxing Day highlight.

Paul Nicholls boasts a five-strong entry to wrest the honours back to Ditcheat with four-time William Hill King George hero Kauto Star (16-1) joined in the line-up by younger sibling Kauto Stone (20-1) and Champion Chaser Master Minded (8-1), together with the exciting Mon Parrain (25-1) and the Sir Alex Ferguson-owned What A Friend (33-1).

Captain Chris heads a trio of entries for Philip Hobbs, and is 8-1 joint second-favourite with William Hill, with Wishfull Thinking is 10-1 and Racing Post Chase winner Quinz is 50-1.

Other exciting potential candidates include Charlie Hall Chase champions Weird Al (12-1) and Nacarat (33-1); Alan King's Medermit (16-1) and Hennessy winner Diamond Harry (20-1) making for a mouth-watering line-up.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said ‘We're delighted with the entries for the William Hill King George - Long Run is most certainly the one to beat in his bid to join the roll of honour of multiple champions, however the challengers to his reign are queuing up with a whole host of exciting chasers waiting in the wings'
