An NHS finance worker from Worcester was certainly in the right place should he have needed the smelling salts after scooping a £150,000 windfall from William Hill's fantasy horse racing competition ‘The Jumps'.
As well as landing the £100,000 first prize, 50 year-old Steve Blight also bagged the runner-up's pot of £50,000 for second place when the competition finished on Cheltenham Gold Cup day.
From languishing in 83rd spot before the Cheltenham Festival began, Steve's entries leapt all the way to 3rd position halfway through the National Hunt racing extravaganza - where bonus points were up for grabs - with selections such as Big Buck's, Finian's Rainbow, and Sprinter Sacre all doing the business.
When Friday came round, the lucky Mr Blight had no less than three horses running for him in the Festival's big race - the Cheltenham Gold Cup - with Long Run, The Giant Bolster and eventual winner Synchronised all featuring in his list of selections.
The deal was soon sealed when 16-time Champion Jockey AP McCoy powered Synchronised to success in the Gold Cup, rewarding Mr Blight with the points he needed to solidify victory in the final strides.
An astounded Steve Blight said, "The worst bit for nerves was when I realised I'd moved from 83rd to 3rd on the Wednesday evening. I was really nervous all through Thursday but by the Gold Cup Friday, with three horses running for me, it was all a bit surreal.
"It's an astonishing amount of money to win for just £2 entry and we haven't decided what to do with it all yet. My wife wants a new kitchen and I want to go to Las Vegas!! And I suppose we'll be sensible and pay the mortgage off too."
William Hill spokeswoman Jennie Prest said, "This is the stuff of dreams for our customer and a truly life-changing sum of money for a small bet at the start of the National Hunt season. With such fantastic prizes on offer, The Jumps competition has gone from strength to strength in the last two years and Steve did brilliantly to come out on top after a very competitive National Hunt season."
