Perth preview - 31 July: Sydney to go well

FORMER jumps jockey Iain Jardine is expecting a decent performance from Sydney Cove in the Watch All Scottish Races Live On RacingUK Novices' Handicap Chase at Perth tonight (Tues).

The Hawick raider was with several trainers before joining his current handler and has been running on the Flat and over hurdles and fences since joining new connections earlier this year.

Jardine said: "Finding openings for him haven't been easy but he seems in good order at home. He ran well to finish second on his chasing debut at Cartmel and seems to have come out of his recent Flat race at Musselburgh well enough when he was fourth."

Among the rivals facing Sydney Cove is Claude Carter, trained just a few miles away by Alistair Whillans.

Whillans said: "We fancied him to run well when he fell at Cartmel last time and he seems none the worse - hopefully he'll run a big race."

Enigmatic character Pete gets on particularly well with Lucy Alexander and the partnership bid to follow up their recent strike at Cartmel.

The gelding is based with Cumbrian trainer Barry Murtagh who said: "Lucy has won on him three times and they understand each other. He surprised us a little at Cartmel as that was his first visit there and he'll be back there next month."

Solway Bay, trained near Silloth by Lisa Harrison, faces seven rivals as he attempts to land the £8,000 feature, the Orion Group Handicap Chase, for the second year running.
