Take the Cuis to find a 1,000 Guineas winner
Her fans have deserted her – but Cuis Ghaire looks to have solid each-way chances in Sunday’s 1,000 Guineas from Newmarket.
And an each-way bet could be the value in a wide-open race, with williamhill.com paying an enhanced one-quarter the odds for the first three places.
Jim Bolger’s filly was all the rage after she won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last year. After the race Kate Miller, our spokesperson, told journalists that, “The hype surrounding this filly has been of epic proportions, and she certainly rewarded punters with her win…. Cuis Ghaire translates from Gaelic as ‘joke’ but she has not given us anything to smile about.”
We cut Cuis Ghaire’s 2009 1,000 Guineas odds to 8/1 from 12/1 that very day.
A couple of lacklustre performances have taken the shine off the Irish daughter of Galileo, though, and she has drifted to 10/1 in the market. But Bolger asserts that the filly is back to her best – which could make her good value to take on the favourites. I'd also suggest that the ground didn't suit her during the latter stages of the season.
And speaking of favourites, Rainbow View makes little appeal to me at 5/4. She’s won four out of four so far but is a little unexposed and unproven on good to firm ground. There’s also the small matter of her being laid out to 9/1 on the betting exchanges early yesterday morning. The potential for abuse from those with inside information in lay betting has been well documented elsewhere so I won’t repeat it here, but this kind of thing sends out worrying signals to me and I’m happy to oppose John Gosden’s filly.
Serious Attitude looks to boast more, ahem, serious credentials. The Cheveley Park Stakes winner is also lightly raced but is unbeaten in all three of her starts and has reportedly worked well on the gallops. It’ll be interesting to see what view the market takes as we get nearer the race.
But the 10/1 on offer about Cuis Ghaire is enough to tempt me. I haven't forgotten her Albany Stakes run, and at those odds she has to be my 1,000 Guineas betting tip.
