The Flat Jockeys' Championship is far from over

Richard Hughes illustrated the race for the Flat Jockeys' Championship is far from over when slamming a Dunstall Park double on Thursday evening, squeezing the deficit to six.

Hughes has a chance to close the gap even further on Friday, with a bumper seven bookings across Newmarket and Wolverhampton, with rival Paul Hanagan boasting six opportunities in an attempt to hit back.

At one stage, William Hill were as short as 1-100 for Hanagan to reign victorious, however, the once-great canyon has steadily become a diminutive fissure, and Richard Fahey's stable representative now rests at 2-9 to secure the Flat crown, with his adversary's price contracting to 3-1.

'Richard Hughes has been adamant throughout the closing strides of the competition that he is only about to admit defeat when it is mathematically impossible to be in with a chance of overthrowing the leading Hanagan', comments William Hill spokeswoman Lucy Rhodes.

'This year's Championship has been a classic battle to the death, with both sides insisting they are in it to the bitter end - it certainly looks as though we are heading to a wonderfully thrilling crescendo taking it right down to the wire aka Spencer and Sanders in '07.
