The Kentucky Derby
The first leg of the US Racing Triple Crown is nearly upon us and they all have favourite I Want Revenge at odds of 9/4 to beat.
This looks to be one of the strongest Kentucky Derby line-ups in years with a full line up of 20 horses likely.
I Want Revenge was breathtaking when winning the Wood Memorial and his young rider Joe Talamo should be up to steering this beast to victory despite it being his first Derby ride.
His breeding is impeccable being the son of 1992 horse of the year Stephen Got Even and grandson of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and he has everything you could want in a prospective Derby candidate and will take all the beating.
His main rival in the market is Dunkirk who is also beautifully bread, out of multiple Group 1 winners and can be backed at odds of 5/1 in the betting.
He won two big races before finding one too good in the Florida Derby. He is quite green still and it could be the case that he will fare better later in the year.
Firesan Fire goes for trainer Larry Jones who has saddled the runner up in the Kentucky Derby two years in a row and will be hoping he can go one better.
Firesan Fire won the Group 2 Louisiana Derby and certainly has the ability to run a big race at odds of 11/2.
The other horse in the mix at the head of the market is the West coast colt Pioneer Of The Nile who can be backed at 6/1.
His father Empire Maker came a close second in this race in 2003 and he has the pedigree to give a big run.
He can be a little lazy and only just does enough in his races but he won the Santa Anita Derby well and comes here with a big chance.
Some interesting horses at bigger prices include Chocolate Candy at odds of 14/1 who should run his race after his second to Pioneer Of The Nile in the Santa Anita Derby but he will do well to reverse that form but could run in to a place.
Papa Clem comes out of Smart Strike, one of the leading sires of the last two years and he battled hard to win the Arkansas Derby.
He finished second behind Firesan Fire in the Louisiana Derby so has a bit to find but it has been reported that he has been clocking some lightening fast times on the gallops and his jockey Rafael Bejarno knows him very well.
Finally at odds of 25/1 is Musket Man who has been seen as something of an overachiever based on his breeding.
He recorded an excellent victory in the Tampa Bay Derby and followed that up with another win next time out and his blistering speed could easily put him in the mix.
I Want Revenge is a worthy favourite and it would be no surprise to see this horse complete the first leg of the Triple Crown but for those who fancy a bet at a bigger price a chance is taken with Papa Clem to transfer his blistering gallop performances to the real thing.
Be sure not to miss one of the highlights of the American racing calendar with the race going off at 11.24pm GMT from Churchill Downs.
